Single Dad's Christmas Miracle had a bit of a bumpy start that gradually improved as the story unfolded. Althea seems to fall in love with her boss in under an hour over the first ten pages, and within two days of meeting and very little time together Clark is equally infatuated. The actual romantic relationship unfolds much more slowly, and even seems to almost reverse as though that beginning never happened.
My favourite character is Clark's daughter Teagan, more commonly known as “Chai Tea” by her older brother. Having grown up without a mother, the three-year-old is not only scared of people but never talks except in whispers to her father and sibling. Through the course of the novel, the little girl gradually overcomes her fears and, in the end, not only talks but also sings. I was also utterly amused by the family pet, a gangly puppy dubbed Crazy Dog for her boisterous antics. The dog has such a strong personality and a couple of memorable moments that it was noticeable that she seemed to vanish towards the end of the novel.
The novel deals with serious topics such as extramarital affairs, abuse, and troubled children, yet the book did not have the depth of emotion you would expect with such issues. It feels as though there is something missing and I did not really feel invested in the main characters, but rather the children. It is the storyline of the two young siblings that kept me reading. For a Christmas book, which I normally dearly love, I did not get that holiday joy.
