"Isn’t It Romantic" meets "Pleasantville" in this really sweet roommate romance, with magical realism and a comfort TV show that may not be as it seems. I cannot stress enough that I fudging (if you know you know) loved this, the concept is refreshing but the story itself lacked depth and dragged on for me.
Having never read Kate Robb’s books before, but hearing nothing but high anticipation and praise for this one, I was delighted to jump in. This captured incredibly well the essence of TV shows in the early 2000s and how important comfort films and shows are. When times are hard, escapism is ideal, and for a lot of people that is into books or shows:
"Carson’s Cove’s predictable patterns were a balm. A steady presence as life as I knew it shattered around me."
I myself know that if I did not have Jane Austen adaptations and Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy, I would not be where I am today. And I would be devastated if being there for real was a disappointment, something which is again explored well here.
Robb provides an Easter Egg Hunt section at the back of the book which explains a lot of the inspiration behind her story, from its plot, to character and place names. Its main plot is akin to cult classic Pleasantville (1998) where a TV repairman gives a remote to two children and gets transported into their favourite black-and-white 1950s sitcom about an idyllic family. Carson’s Cove itself is inspired by Dawson’s Creek. The Bronze, the pub in Carson’s Cove, is named after the nightclub in Buffy. Poppy’s surname Bensen is akin to Ashley Benson, who played Hanna in Pretty Little Liars. There are plenty of other examples but these struck me the most.
I really liked the concept and I knew I would when I read the blurb. In a lot of ways it is a great read: it was a good concept, there was a bit of humour, some serious moments, some self-discovery, there were some predictable things that happened (which matched the vibe of things being a comfort because they are predictable and safe), the romance itself was sweet too. My favourite funny moment is probably when they realise they cannot physically swear when they’re in Carson’s Cove.
Unfortunately, I did not enjoy this as much as I’d have liked. Some of the characters felt shallow because there was not much going on and some questions at the end never got answered. Right now, this is a 3.5 for me. Had characters been fleshed out that would have been great. It feels more like a young adult book so I would have probably enjoyed this more if I was younger.
The ending where she is given another cake and is to make a wish, is so perfect!
I was looking forward to reading this book having enjoyed the magical realism element in books previously.
Unfortunately, I struggled to finish this one. I wasn’t onboard with the premise of the Carson’s Cove set up and although the characters were interesting and relatable, they weren’t enough of a pull.
If you’re a lover of shows like Dawson’s Creek, The O.C and Beverly Hills 90210, you’ll appreciate the nostalgia of the Carson’s Cove backdrop and the recognisable side characters from that 00’s era of tv shows.
A solid 3 ⭐️ read for me. It’s cute and quirky.
"Prime Time Romance" by Kate Robb is a delightful and engaging romantic comedy that explores the world of television and the unexpected love that can bloom behind the scenes. Robb’s writing is full of humor, charm, and sharp wit, making this novel a page-turner that’s as entertaining as it is heartwarming.
The story centers around a protagonist who works in the fast-paced world of television—whether they are a producer, a writer, or perhaps even an on-air talent—navigating the challenges of a demanding career while dealing with the unexpected arrival of romance. The novel captures the excitement and chaos of the television industry, with its mix of drama, high stakes, and behind-the-scenes antics. Amidst this backdrop, the protagonist finds themselves falling for someone they never expected, leading to a romance filled with banter, tension, and plenty of swoon-worthy moments.
Robb does a fantastic job of creating relatable, three-dimensional characters who bring the story to life. The chemistry between the romantic leads is electric, and their journey from colleagues (or perhaps rivals) to something more is both satisfying and full of emotional depth. The supporting cast adds an extra layer of fun and complexity, rounding out the vibrant world in which the story unfolds.
"Prime Time Romance" is perfect for readers who enjoy contemporary romance with a bit of workplace drama and a lot of heart. Kate Robb’s novel is a must-read for anyone who loves stories about finding love in unexpected places, especially when the spotlight is shining bright. With its witty dialogue, lovable characters, and a plot that keeps you hooked from start to finish, "Prime Time Romance" is a delightful escape into a world where love is always in the script.
I love this, we all fantasise over book boyfriends / locations so I really enjoyed exploring this romance in the world of Carson's Cove.
After absolutely loving Under Your Spell, I was so excited to read this one. It is light, funny and perfect to cosy up with after a long day. We’ve all imagined what it would be like to wake up in our favourite 2000s small town TV show, right? I think the premise of the book is so interesting and unique, and I was drawn in immediately. I loved the romance, nostalgia and the twist of magic. Another triumph from Kate Robb!
I really enjoyed this book and give it a solid 4⭐️. I engaged with the characters immediately, and the development between Brynn and Josh was so believable because it wasn't rushed.
The bottom line is that it was such a fun, lighthearted read with a little bit of spice tossed into the mix.
3.5 ⭐️
This was such a cute read!
Calling all 90s and 00s teen drama fans- if you loved shows like Dawson creek, one tree hill, the OC and 90210, this is a book for you!
I really enjoyed this spells love so I was so happy to receive a copy of Prime Time Romance, and glad to say it didn’t disappoint! I loved the references to pop culture in here and how she wove all the best aspects from our favourite teen dramas into the story. The romance was 10/10 and I loved that it was slow burn , constantly kept us guessing in a “will they won’t they” style.
While I did enjoy it, one thing that meant I couldn’t score it more highly was that, the characters weren’t as developed as I’d have liked them to be, because we only have a very short time with them before they enter an alternate reality, in which they have to embody other people so I felt like we didn’t get enough time to know them as they were before but that aside, I really enjoyed the story and it was a fast paced read for me so I would definitely recommend 💕
This was a fun read but missing something for me that would make me rate it any higher. The first part was really good but towards the end felt myself skim reading. I personally felt the romance was unrealistic so struggled to really feel much for the characters
Thank you Netgallery for the opportunity to read this ARC copy
When I first read the synopsis of this story I was so intrigued, I really enjoyed this romance where the heroine finds herself transported to her favourite teen drama's small town as one of the characters, 15 years later. It was so fun to read - especially for anyone who grew up watching and loving all teen programmes.
This was an easy read and put a smile on my face.
I felt it was a little bit rushed at the end but it did not spoil the feeling of reading this story.
*Prime Time Romance* by Kate Robb was such a delightful read! As a huge fan of paranormal romance, this book ticked all the right boxes for me. I absolutely loved the unique twist in fates and the way the story wove in just the right touch of magic to keep things exciting. The supernatural elements added an extra layer of intrigue that kept me hooked from start to finish.
Brynn and Josh’s chemistry was off the charts! Every scene they shared was filled with so much tension and attraction that it practically sizzled off the pages. Their connection felt genuine and electric, making it impossible not to root for them. Watching their relationship evolve against the backdrop of all the magical happenings was a real treat.
Robb has a knack for blending romance with paranormal elements seamlessly, creating a world that’s easy to get lost in. If you love stories with a hint of magic, unexpected twists, and sizzling chemistry, then *Prime Time Romance* is definitely a must-read. I can’t wait to see what else she has in store!
This was another magical offering from the author of "This Spells Love" - one of my all time favourites!
Brynn and her roommate, the ever-so-gorgeous Josh, somehow end up as starring characters in her favourite guilty pleasure TV show. And the only way out is to fulfil the happily ever after that the characters themselves never got. Only....what seemed so attractive on the small screen just doesn't hold the same appeal in real life, and sparks do not fly. Will they be stuck there forever, or will they figure out the key to returning to their own lives? And will Brynn realise that sometimes the leading man is just not all that?
You should always be careful when making wishes...they may just come true.
Written fabulously, but coming a slight second to Kate Robb's first book, this is worth curling up with a glass of wine, tea or coffee, snuggling in and getting into the reading groove.
I LOVED this! I honestly just found myself smiling during most of it!!
Another fun and joyful read from Robb, with a whimsical twist of magic and a nostalgic celebration of teen TV dramas from the past 20+ years. The references to teen dramas of the 90/00s was just perfect!! It has the cozy small town feel with a sweet romance. I love the perspective of a 30 yr old Brynn trying to navigate teenage drama but having adult ideas. She makes her own path and owns it. The chemistry with Josh and Brynn is wonderful!
I can't wait to read the next Kate Robb book - Auto author for me!
If you have that one, on repeat, TV series that was cancelled out of the blue with a cliff hanger, and an ‘ohh no, they never got together the way they should have’, and you have depended on it because your own life wasn’t quite perfect, then wish on a birthday cake candle as Brynn did, and see what happens. To be prepared for the outcome read this easy read book. If you have a flat mate, better get them to read it too! Thank you to Penguin General UK - Fig Tree, Hamish Hamilton, Viking, Penguin Life, Penguin Business and NetGalley for the ARC. The views expressed are all mine, freely given.
Prime Time Romance, the second novel from Kate Robb, was such a joy to read. I absolutely loved it.
Prime Time Romance is a duel POV story that sees Brynn and her roommate Josh transported to Carson’s Cove, the setting of Brynn’s much loved comfort TV show, after she wishes for her own happy ever after when a mysterious birthday cake appears at her door. When they wake up in Carson’s Cove, they come to find that not only are they now in a weird new world but they’re no longer themselves, they’re expected to play the role of the girl next door and the bad boy. Only the girl next door is supposed to end up with the golden boy, so will they stick to the script or will real love change this story.
As with her debut, This Spells Love, Robb has created a wonderful work of magical realism where we are totally transported to the fictional world of Carson’s Cove. In it we have a gorgeous slow burn friends/roommates to lovers, alongside a love letter to all of those teen shows that our millennial hearts lived for. There are so many fun Easter eggs to spot - but I’ll leave those for the reader to enjoy. I will say though that I particularly loved the Buffy ones!
This novel is best enjoyed if you’re prepared to suspend your disbelief and just go with it. If you can do that you’re going to have such fun reading this one. It’s fun to see how Brynn at first embraces her new reality, getting to live out her comfort show, but then allows herself to break away from the old tropes and be truer to herself. I really liked the blossoming relationship between Brynn and Josh, as well as the emerging friendship between Brynn and Luce.
This one was a lot of fun and the nostalgia was just brilliant. I’m looking forward to whatever Robb writes next.
What a beautifully quirky read! A little bit bonkers and whole lot of romance. Well worth suspending your beliefs to dive into this unique, cleverly crafted and dun bit of escapism. Fun and fabulous!
Having grown up with an active imagination, I always tried to re-imagine my favourite shows with different endings, or what kind of character I'd be in the universe. Right down to what I would have done in the main character's shoes.
So finding a book about a woman making a wish and ending up in her favourite comfort show was right up my alley. (Although with my current comfort shows I'd be terrified to end up there - I'm not too hopped up on hospitals or surgery IRL, not keen on my possessions setting on fire, or I'd end up pretty much dead/irrelevant in Greendale. IYKYK)
This book was such a fun and easy read. Sprinkled with the nostalgia of old shows we love, with tropes and nods to show plot lines we like, it is an easy recommendation from me.
One thing I wanted more of was a little bit of drama. Thinking about it like a series, we have the main storyline which was explored well and had its notable gasp-worthy moments. But I feel like some of the mini-plot lines or side characters introduced felt a bit irrelevant and added just to give a 'sense' of tension.
The only other thing I think would have tied the story up nicely was a little longer in the 'after', but that's because I'm greedy 🥹
A huge thanks to Penguin, and NetGalley for this ARC!
i adored this book and absolutely sped through it! brynn is divorced and living with josh, a bartender. after not really talking for a while, a night out at josh’s bar sees the two watching brynn’s favourite tv show. one unexpected food delivery and birthday wish later, brynn and josh find themselves in a whole new world, specifically, that of brynn’s favourite fictional world.
this book is full of funny, heartwarming, and emotional moments. it was such a lovely read and definitely recommend it!!
I’m not sure how I feel about this book. It’s definitely 50/50 for me. Some bits I really enjoyed but others felt flat. I think it could have been shorter but then it wasn’t super long in the first place.
The romance had loads of potential but there wasn’t enough depth to it so it all felt a bit flat. The plot did make up for it as it was really interesting but I was here for the romance and there just wasn’t much
”You can’t start the next chapter of your life if you keep rewatching the old one”
A new divorcee finds herself in the ideal world of her favourite 2000s teen soap and a second-chance romance
this is the author debut and i really enjoyed it
This book was a bit of a mix for me! It wasn’t that I didn’t enjoy it but it also wasn’t one of my favourites either! I liked it but I’m not sure I’d read it again, the concept was unique and I hadn’t truly been expecting it!
The FMC had a lot of qualities that I could personally relate to, which made the book more enjoyable.
Overall this was a nice book, and I would recommend for a bit of a different read!
