Three Days in June is a short novel by Anne Tyler focusing on the story of Gail, the mother of the bride, over 3 days surrounding her daughters wedding. While Gail navigates feeling left out at the wedding, a series of events occurs that cause her to focus and reflect on the past and gain insight into her future path. I loved the writing and Tyler's accounts of human nature, and bringing this cast of characters to life. Quick and enjoyable read!
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC for my honest review. This story is about Gail who’s is about to see her only daughter get married. Her ex-husband shows up on her doorsteps with a cat in tow and says he’s staying with her as the son-in-law is allergic to cats. Gail has just found out that she will most likely lose her job. To say the least, she is feeling a little overwhelmed. As she watches from the side lines all that is going on with few days before the wedding, she’s feeling a little left out as she watches her daughter become more attached to the in-laws. Anne Tyler did a good job in pulling all the feelings out in such a short book. I did like the book.

**Three Days in June**
*by Anne Tyler*
*Release Date: 02/11/2015*
What an extraordinary read! This marks my first venture into Anne Tyler's literary world, and I can't help but wonder how I’ve missed her works until now. With so many books by her, I’m eager for recommendations—what should I dive into next?
**MY REVIEW**
Gail and Max have navigated the tricky waters of divorce yet maintain an unexpectedly amicable relationship. As their daughter Debbie prepares for a "small wedding," she is thrust into a whirlwind of emotions when she receives shocking news just a day before the ceremony. Each parent reacts in stark contrast to the other, illuminating their distinct personalities.
Characterized by her candid yet passive-aggressive nature, Gail expresses her thoughts unabashedly. The recent possible loss of her job weighs heavily on her, and she grapples with feelings of exclusion as her only daughter prepares to embark on this monumental life change.
When Gail thinks she can handle everything, Max, her ex-husband, and Debbie’s father arrive on her doorstep, planning to stay with her through the wedding festivities. As the days unfold, Gail starts to confront the realities of her situation, leading her to understand that some things in her life need to shift and evolve.
Overall, I found it to be a resonant exploration of family dynamics and personal growth, earning it a solid
4 stars 🌠🌠🌠🌠
Anne Tyler has a real gift for depicting human nature and her characters always evoke emotional responses. This novella depicts three days in the life of Gail and Max, a divorced couple who daughter is being married. It explores the characters and their personalities, the situations that led to the divorce with some surprises there, and some dawning self awareness on Gail’s part. It begins the day before the wedding, the day of the wedding, and the day after. There is no great action arc, but we come to know Gail and Max. I really fell in love with Max, who is so much more than meets the eye. But the main focus is on Gail who is sort of forced to reexamine her life after being eased out of her job as assistant headmistress in a school. She is not involved with her daughter’s wedding plans. Her daughter wanted a simple wedding so Gail respected that, but now she realizes she is missing out on experiences. When Max shows up on the doorstep with a cat he is fostering, she begins to examine her feelings about a variety of aspects of her life. It is a very short read with a lovely after-taste!
Thanks to Netgalley and Knopf for an ARC in exchange for an unbiased review.
Three Days in June, by Anne Tyler, is a delightful, heartwarming diversion. In a surprisingly short novel, Tyler introduces us to Gail, an older, somewhat socially inept mother-of-the bride on the weekend of the wedding. On Day 1, she is notified that her job is in jeopardy and her Ex shows up to spend weekend at her house, accompanied by a stray cat. Tyler is a master of characterization and the subtleties of the human heart. By the end of the book (and the weekend), I knew that I would miss Gail and her various family members. Thank you to NetGalley and Random House Publishing for the opportunity to read a digital ARC. It brought me smiles and joy!
What an absolutely lovely book! The writing was very clear and easy to read, the story kept me hooked from start to finish, and I loved how it ended. This was one of those books where you sit down to read and don’t realize how far into the book you’ve gotten. I really enjoyed this and encourage you to pick it up if you can!
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for providing the eARC in exchange for an honest review. I have been a fan of Anne Tyler over the years and this novella was a quick, sweet read, perfect for the beach trip I was on. Gail's daughter Debbie is getting married while Gail's own life is in turmoil at work and then Gail's ex Max shows up (with a cat) while Debbie is confiding a secret about her fiance. Anne Tyler does a nice job of wrapping everything up in such a compact little package and I would recommend this book.
Three Days in June by Anne Tyler takes place over a few days. Gail Baines just lost her job and her daughter Debbie is getting married. Gail's ex-husband shows up at her door with a cat and the need for a place to stay.
This short read is full of truth and humor. It delves deep into love, family, and marriage. Debbie's fiancé has a secret that she shares with her parents that brings up their past relationship. Anne Tyler is a phenomenal writer. I definitely recommend this one.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an advance copy for my honest review.
A lovely slice of life look at an “older” (60s) woman’s world from weddings, cats, haircuts to romance. It’s a quiet one and more of a character study for those that like or dislike that. It reminded me a bit of Elizabeth Strout. Quick, enjoyable and poignant.
Anne is a new one author and I enjoyed her story. It was full of humor, self discovery and a bit of family drama.
I’m actually felt really bad for Gail throughout most of the book. She didn’t stand up for herself, was in a bit of a depression and just really needed a friend/hug/someone to see her.
I was really mad at her daughter and ex husband…don’t want to give anything away but they were both jerks. lol
There were some funny moments, many serious ones and thought provoking…what would you do or how would you act in this situation?
A quick and entertaining read. Thank NetGalley for the complimentary copy.

This book packed a lot into a small amount of pages. Anne Tyler has written another beautifully pieced together novel about the ordinary moments of life. We follow the main character, Gail, during the days before and after her daughter’s planned wedding. She is faced with some challenges in her job, as the mother of the bride and handling her ex-husband showing up on her doorstep. There are no huge moments - just the capturing of everyday in a very realistic story.
The writing was well done and the characters have rich stories to share.
I really enjoyed this story and think that anybody looking for a nice piece of fiction will also enjoy it.
I really enjoyed this quick read about a family on the three days around their daughter’s wedding. For fans of books that are heavy in the intricacies and imperfections of family dynamics, like Claire Lombardo or Catherine Newman.
I really loved this book. It has a sweet and simple style that gets right to the root of human relationships. It shines a light on how the little mundane tasks and conversations of our days really are the big things in the end. I adored the gruff but lovable female lead character, her somewhat flighty daughter, and the somewhat absentminded but good-hearted male lead. The sense of place was also strong in this story, and I could picture her small home and her town as I was reading. This was a 5 star read for me, because the writing talent is just so strong and clear. Highly recommend this one to lovers of stories that examine family dynamics, as well as for fans of Elizabeth Strout and Ann Patchett.
3.5 stars
I enjoyed this book. It didn’t grip me or wasn’t anything that set my world on fire, but the writing was good and the story was very relatable. I enjoyed Gail & Max’s post marriage relationship. And also the background of how and why they got divorced. It also fed into her relationship with her daughter and her soon to be husband as well. Which really helped the reader understand her relationship with her daughter.
Overall I would definitely pick up another book by Anne Tyler.

I love reading new authors, and I had never read anything by Anne Tyler before. I requested this book because I like the cover. The storyline itself was okay, just nothing gripping...not twist, not secrets, just 3 days in June! I could not make up my mind whether I like Gail or not.
Thank you for this ARC!
This book was exactly what I needed. I am honestly not sure how Tyler does it - a short, sweet and well written book. It did not lack in character development or plot, yet it was done in under 200 pages. I read this in one sitting, that is how much it sucked me in. I loved that it included older characters, second chance love, and more challenges that are faced later in life (and earlier too!)
Gail is having a bad day, on the weekend of her daughter's wedding. She lost her job, was not invited to spa day and her ex-husband showed up unannounced needing a place to stay. The book follows Gail's joys, challenges, love and heartbreak over three days. I truly enjoyed the perspectives and story and I am blown away by how much was packed into a short book!
Thank you Netgalley for my advanced reader copy
Over three days in June - the day before her only daughter's wedding, the day of, and the day after - we follow 61-year-old Gail who, on the morning of the wedding rehearsal, finds out that she might be losing her job as the assistant principal at a local private school in, of course, Baltimore. This slim novel was what you'd expect an Anne Tyler book to be, and yet it's to her credit that it never feels repetitive and you're immediately involved in the lives of her often unlikeable characters. The nuances of everyday "normal" lives and perfectly ordinary people who momentarily turn into something more as layers, shades, or secrets are revealed and dealt with. The ending was unexpected and didn't quite feel like the author's others, though they have been wrapping up rather sentimentally for the past few novels.
Thank you to Knopf, Pantheon, Vintage, and Anchor, NetGalley, and Anne Tyler for the copy of Three Days in June.
This was my first book by Anne Tyler and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I enjoyed that it took place over three days but there was backstory told as well
A lovely short read by Anne Tyler. I’ve been reading her books for decades. You start the first page and just get drawn in by her writing and you stick with the characters because they feel like your friends. Gail is relatable in many ways, but so is Max. Settle in for a good read.
This is my first Anne Tyler book but definitely won't be my last. The characters were full but sort of unlikeable and a lot happens in the everyday across three days in June. It's quick and the writing is excellent, I just wasn't the biggest fan of the characters.
3.5 stars but rounding down.
