At the beginning of this story Gail Baines, asks
People don’t tap their watches anymore; have you noticed?
This made me laugh as someone close to Gail’s age I remember when people did that – no need to do that now as most people don’t wear a watch. I am one of the few people I know who does. I did replace my favorite watch and had no idea that the new one is solar charged.
Okay Back to story!
Gail is the assistant Headmistress at an all-girls school and the Headmistress, Marlkee Burton tells her that she was going to be out to have a cardioversion – which is an electrical jolt to her heart that will stop it and then start again. Hmmmm
She also mentions that at sixty-six she is seriously considering retirement. Gail is sure this means she will be given the he- position. However Marilee tells her that the new person being considered has her own assistant and actually Gail’s people skills aren’t great. She states surely you’ll be the first to admit your social interactions have never been your strong point.
Yikes!
Thankfully Gail only child daughter Debbie is getting married so she can now put her energy into it.
Story is divided into three sections-
the day before the wedding,
the day of,
and the day after.
During these days Gail thinks about former relationships, her marriage breakup of her marriage as well as her fears for her future.
I have read several Anne Tyler stories so was somewhat prepared to experience the joy as well as the heartbreak.

The day before the wedding of Gail's daughter she may have quit her job and her ex-husband shows up on her door step with a cat. This was a quick read taking place over a course of three days. However I was not a fan of the narrator. I found her strange and not in a fun quirky way. She seems like an exhausting person and having to follow her life for three days was also exhausting. Early on she is told that she does not have great people skills. This is an accurate statement and being in her mind on top of this made for a rough read for me. Worth a read if you can get past this or if she happens to be a character you can identify with.

3.5/5. This was a cute novella about a woman named Gail going through 3 days in June. I liked the author’s descriptions of daily life but at times it was dragged out and unnecessary. Gail had to face a lot of decisions in this book such as what to do for career change, about adopting a cat or not, how to handle her daughter getting married, and how to handle her ex. It was cute but felt forgettable.
Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher, and Anne Tyler for this ARC copy in exchange for my honest review.

Quick read but compelling and interesting. I do kind of wish the daughter's outcome was explored a little bit more but I get that we were focused on Gail.

This was a quirky, short read with a sweet message at the end. It gave me similar vibes to Eleanor Oliphant but in a much more simplified way. I would definitely recommend!

Gail's daughter is getting married, but Gail is having a very bad day. She's just lost her job, and her ex-husband has just showed up on her doorstep with a cat. This is the story of three days -- the day before the wedding, the wedding, and the day after -- and all the drama that disrupts Gail's quiet life.
I really love Anne Tyler's writing. She grabs the reader from the very beginning and creates characters that are realistic and adorably quirky. Gail is very self-aware, but has difficulty understanding and relating to others. This is an engaging novel about family dynamics and secrets. There's not a great deal of action, yet I could not stop reading. I could relate to all the characters with their flaws and their attempts to understand each other. A sweet, thoughtful look at everyday life and the relationships between husband/wife, mother/daughter, and father/daughter. I really liked it.

Anne Tyler has written over 20 books, but this is the first one I've read, and it makes me realize I've been missing out!
Three Days in June is about three days in the life of Gail Baines, a 61-year old assistant school mistress who unexpectedly goes through a life crisis just as her daughter is getting married. It sets her to question herself, the decisions she's made, and the complexities of love.
I might not be 61 yet, but I've lived long enough to realize life is complicated. The sense of self can be so certain at 20, but as life hits it's easy to lose pieces of yourself to a spouse or children, to question who you are and what you have to offer. Through Gail, Anne Tyler explores heartbreaks, past choices, and the love that connects family. It's funny, insightful, and full of characters who annoy but you can't help but love.
Thank you Net Galley and Knopf for allowing me to read this ARC! Three Days in June will be released February 2025 and is a gem you should definitely read!

A solid addition to Anne Tyler’s amazing list of books and stories. Her ability to quickly and deeply develop characters is legendary along with her ability to immerse readers into her tales.
Thanks to NetGalley and Knopf for the opportunity to read this ARC.

Anne Tyler always manages to make the ordinary extraordinary. Her characters are so real and wonderful and Gail is no exception. I’ve been reading and loving Tyler’s work for decades and Three Days in June was a wonderful addition. What a treat!

Even though life can seem to be quite ordinary, a lot can happen in three short days. Day one: Gail Baines is called into the principal’s office expecting to be told that her boss is retiring and she will be taking over. Instead she is told that she is going back to teaching and is being replaced for someone with more people skills. Impulsively she quits her job. Her ex husband Max arrives unannounced at her doorstep with a rescued cat for their daughter’s wedding. Day two: Gail’s daughter Debbie is being married to Ken but the wedding may be in jeopardy because of a secret Debbie shares with her parents. Day three: Max is heading back home but tries to convince Gail to take a low paying teaching position at his school that is miles away. Gail doesn’t want to leave her elderly mother. Quick read with humor and relatable issues in many people’s lives. Anne Tyler has a knack for writing about ordinary folks leading ordinary lives in a way that makes them (and so, by extension, us) fascinating. I thoroughly enjoyed this story of a wedding weekend, and getting to know Gail and Max. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I have been reading Anne Tyler books for decades now. This one is, like earlier books, really able to paint a portrait of a family with such empathy and skill that it's actually a lot to bear. But you will leave feeling like you have learned a little more about human, having read it. Very easy 5 stars from me.

’m not exactly sure the right way to review this book. It was broken up in to three sections one for each of the Three Days in June. This short book was about Gail a divorced women and her day before her daughters wedding, her daughters wedding day and the day after. The authors writing is very descriptive and does draw you into the story, but I kept waiting for something pivotal to happen. Was something going to happen that her daughter doesn’t get married. Was something going to happen between her and her ex-husband? I felt that it took until the last few sentences of the book to find out the meaning of it all.
An interesting, almost thought provoking story. Thank you NetGalley for this eARC, for my honest review

Anne Tyler does it again! Well-written, thought provoking and easy to read- don’t miss it. If you are not currently a fan, you will become one.

A short, quirky glimpse into an ordinary woman's life, in all its complicated glory. Over three days, Gail Baines quits her job, hosts her ex-husband and a cat, and attends her daughter's wedding. She is feeling many things: overlooked, left out, underappreciated, regretful over past decisions. Anne Tyler is the master of the small gestures that tell so much: an older woman trying a new hairstyle, a daughter offering to buy her father a suit, the order in which "thank you" phone calls are made. We see these flawed characters and recognize the feelings; just like a peek into the interior life of a stranger, where we find ourselves reflected. Gail realizes that her life still holds the opportunity for new experiences and new discoveries, even at her particular age-no one is ever done changing if they don't want to be!

I didn't like this book. There, I said it. Normally I could finish a book this size in 1 sitting, but this one took me 4 days because I just couldn't bring myself to pick it up. I can see what the author was trying to do, but I was terribly bored throughout the entire thing.
Thanks NetGalley for the e-arc in exchange of my honest opinion.

Thank you to NetGalley and Knopf, Pantheon, Vintage, and Anchor for providing me with this ARC for my honest review. This is my first Anne Tyler book and while I enjoyed the writing style of the author the plot fell short for me. The characters were dull and forgettable and nothing really happened in the story. The FMC was not relatable and not interesting at all. She did not have good relationships with any of the other characters except the cat. It is a book that I would not recommend to my fellow readers.

Anne Tyler is one of my favorite authors and her newest book follows the trend of introducing the reader to captivating and quirky characters. In the span of three days, Gail Baines goes through a series of mishaps, disappointments, and stress on the eve of her daughter's wedding. Gail is opinionated and has difficulty with stress; her faults and reactions can be relatable to many readers. Tyler always writes with humor and sensitivity with the reader experiencing a range of emotions as the story unfolds. This was an enjoyable novel with all the stress of a wedding and family interactions defining the characters on love and marriage.

“Anger feels so much better than sadness. Cleaner, somehow, and more definite. But then when the anger fades, the sadness comes right back again the same as ever.”
Three days in June is the latest book by one of my favorite authors, Anne Tyler. In many ways it’s a very typical story for her - a slice of an ordinary life, about a woman named Gail attending her daughter’s small wedding where she’s forced to spend time with her ex-husband, Max.
The book takes place from Friday to Sunday, and is surprisingly short…In her typical fashion Tyler somehow manages to develop the two main characters very well, but because it’s so short I was left wanting more of both of their stories.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an advanced digital copy in exchange for an honest review. {Quote is from an uncorrected proof.}

I think this is one of my favorite Anne Tyler books. She always does a great job of quietly exploring characters with a minimal plot. Her characters feel so real and relatable to me and she has a counselor-like grasp on human behavior that I really enjoy. I think I may be buying a hard copy of this one for my personal library after it’s published.
