This book explores key creeds, confessions, catechisms, and councils from the Apostles’ Creed to the Second Vatican Council. Justin’s accessible style makes complex theological history approachable, offering historical context, summaries, and modern relevance for each topic. The inclusion of discussion questions and recommended readings enhances its value for personal study or group discussions.

The book effectively bridges the past and present, emphasizing how early Christian thought shapes today’s faith. Its strength lies in its brevity and clarity, though some may desire deeper analysis. Justin Holcomb is an Episcopal priest and a professor of theology and Christian thought at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary and Reformed Theological Seminary. This book provides a helpful introduction to the early theology of the church and how that theology developed as it explains centuries of creeds, councils, catechisms, and confessions.

This is a good book to help the reader (or an adult study group) understand how the creeds were developed and what they contain and then how the later councils have continued to impact our current theology. KNOW THE CREEDS AND COUNCILS is designed for personal study or classroom use, small groups, or Sunday school classes who want to understand more about the foundations of their faith. Each chapter covers a key statement of faith and includes a discussion of its historical context, a simple explanation of the statement's content and key points, reflections on contemporary and ongoing relevance, and discussion questions.
