Zack, a cop, is still reeling from the loss of his partner and uncle, and the guilt he feels over both deaths. He's currently undercover, though it's personal and not sanctioned, at a company specializing in high-risk adventure vacations, the same place three men, one of them Zack's beloved uncle, Jackson, died. Now, if he could just nail this parachute landing, it'll solidify his persona of an adrenaline junkie. Wait, why is that woman not only in his landing path, but also pointing a video camera at him?
Oh, this was going to...yep, she was right, it hurt. Sam, a television news reporter, didn't see the man jump, but she did see him headed directly for her, albeit a little too late. In between the pain and nausea, Sam and the kamikaze parachuter, debate who is at fault. Yes, Sam was in the landing zone, but wouldn't an experienced jumper have been able to avoid her? *That's her defense and she's sticking to it.* Besides, she hurts, a lot. But she needs to refocus, her vision isn't blurry, right?, and ensure she catches Maxwell's jump. Maxwell is the hometown hero as well as the closest she's ever had to a father. If she misses it, she knows she'll be jobless, something she can't risk.
Zack and Sam share apologies, concerns, and a little flirting. Okay, the last part is pretty much all Zack, something Sam makes herself ignore, figuring he's like all the other skydivers...confident in their appeal because it has a high approval rating and follow through. *wink wink* When Zack learns she doesn't fly, he gently teases her about the obvious fear, and then immediately feels bad, yet again, after learning she has a legitimate reason.
Zack is doing some ignoring of his own though, avoiding Sam's questions regarding his background, specifically whether or not it contains time in the military. Instead, he'd rather focus on something else.
“If you’re not still active military, then what do you do these days, Zack Hunter, ex-military man?” - Sam
“Right now, I’m fully engaged in my next mission.” - Zack
“Which is?” - Sam
“Getting to know you.” - Zack
It backfires though when Zack continues his persona of a man able to spend money frivously, enjoying the benefits of a wealthy family. He unknowingly hit Sam's hot button, appearing to be like her absentee father, a man uncaring of who he hurt or left in his wake, including her, her sister, and their Mom. As Zack and Sam prepare to go separate ways, tragedy strikes, and unfortunately, not only do they witness it, but Sam may have just lost the father of her heart.
When Sam learns of the other deaths, her reporter brain knows there's a story, not to mention that Zack is hiding a few secrets of his own, and she has no problem blackmailing, err persuading him to help her uncover what's going on. Seeing as Zack wasn't really left with a choice, he and Sam begin working together. This new outcome causes Zack to question the wisdom of their alliance, and just how long he can resist Sam.
How far are Zack and Sam willing to go to identify those responsible? Will Zack and Sam succumb to the chemistry they share? Will Zack reveal his true identity to Sam? Will Sam be able to save her job? Will justice prevail for those murdered? Who is behind the deaths and why? Will Zack and Sam get their HEA? Or was their time together just a temporary adventure?
