I love the books of Patrick Modiano. My knowledge of the French language is fairly limited but the books are fairly easy to read. The short books and stories all have an eerie atmosphere of loneliness and loss of self. They are never threatening and there strength is that Patrick Modiano leaves many things untold so you have to "construct" the story as a reader as you go.
