Flourney wisely takes what could be a mishmash of a story about 13 adult siblings who must decide what happens to the family house wen the matriarch dies and focuses on two with diverse challenges. It's slow paced but rewarding. .

I initially enjoyed this family saga set in Detroit, but as it went on my interest waned, partly because a number of the characters a bit irritating, and partly because the 'haint' aspect Flournoy kept returning to really isn't my type of thing. The writing was good, and some parts of the book were very enjoyable, but overall it was too patchy for me to wholeheartedly recommend it.
