This was a powerful story about overcoming challenges, and people’s prejudices. The main character worries her dreams of running are gone when there is no girls’ track team at her new school, so she must stand up for her rights and find a way to run. This coming of age story really challenges the reader to look deeper and try to understand others before we judge them, and reminds us that everyone is fighting their own battles.

Run Like A Girl is a fantastic YA title about a teen girl who is sent to live in a new city with her estranged father while her mother looks for work. This book has a diverse cast and will hook readers in! There is so much to love about this title! Highly recommended for all YA collections!

Run Like A Girl was another YA book I’m hoping to bring into the library.

I loved its diverse cast of characters – particularly the ones of the strong female variety – the complex familial relationships, and the focus on athletics.

I can’t wait to see where this debut author goes next.

Dera’s parents have been estranged for almost her whole life, and she’s been living with her mom without any contact from her dad. In a strange twist of fate, her mom makes her go live with her dad for her junior year. She finds out that her dad is super wealthy (while her mom can barely pay rent) and she will be going to an almost all white upper class high school without a girls track team. Track is Dera’s claim to fame, which she is counting on for a college scholarship. Throughout the book, she faces challenges of racism, sexism, and emotional abuse, ultimately fighting the whole way.
I really enjoyed the strong female character in this book and the fact that this was a track book. A few details could have been flushed out more, and the ending really seemed to rush the resolution between family members. Ultimately, this was a fantastic read. Highly recommended for high school readers.

This is a great ya sports story. The main character had lots of challenges she faces as she tries to compete in a sport she isn’t welcome in. I loved seeing her persevere. The story is set in high school but the story is clean without mature language. Great representation of culture.

Memorable and relatable characters that are so easy to root for and engaging writing make this a winner. Despite having a premise that's been done before, this still felt fresh, and between the sports, family drama, school drama, romance, and friendships, there was something for every realistic fiction reader. Would recommend this for both middle and high school readers. Really enjoyed the audiobook narration as well.
