I received this ARC through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. I am a huge fan of the newer musical remake of this (featuring Russel Crowe) and loved this manga just as much. The storyline was fantastic without cutting too much seen in the movie. The images were beautiful without being too graphic at some of the scenes not really meant for children. Fantastic. |
Such a fantastic rendition of a great classic!! Thoroughly enjoyed reading this in the Manga format. Thank you for this wonderful initiative of converting classics into gorgeous Manga. |
Everyone should know the story of Les Mis, and I have to say that this manga lays it out nicely with no big plot holes or anything. The graphics are really good and it was a quick, enjoyable read. |
3.5/5 stars. Les Mis the manga is a surprisingly accurate adaptation. It manages to highlight each important detail of Les Mis the novel. If you're unfamiliar with Les Mis, we follow a man named Jean Valjean. Jean Valjean is thrown in jail for stealing a loaf of bread. When he is finally released from jail he is placed in a situation that changes his perspective on life and makes him want to be a better man. Eventually he meets and adopts the orphan Cosette, whom he devotes his life to. The story focuses on Jean Valjean's life and character development. That being said, the French revolution also plays a major role in the story. Les Mis the novel is at it's best when it comes to characterization. We follow Jean Valjean's journey for a massive 1000 pages, so naturally by the end of things we really feel we know Jean Valjean. Of course, as Les Mis the manga was very short and sweet it wasn't going to give the same satisfying outcome. We still get to know Jean Valjean, and he is still very much a likeable character, however, there was something to be desired in his characterization. The same can be said from any character, and I was especially disappointed with Eponine's role. She was such a complex, driving force in the original, but not so much in the manga adaptation. However, the characterization of the manga was strong enough that by the end of the book the ending still had a very strong impact on me. While I thoroughly enjoyed the artwork of Les Mis the manga, it was almost too cute. We lose a bit of the nitty-gritty of the original, especially when it came to Fantine's character. Still, the artwork was a very nice addition to a very well-loved story. Ultimately, Les Mis the manga was a very true to the original adaptation. It is worth picking up if you love or are too intimidated by the original. The artwork is a great addition, and this book features some excellent characterization. While I think this story could have benefited from a few extra volumes, it is an excellent addition to the Les Mis sphere. |
Another great manga classic! Now, to read the novel. This one will stick with me. Go read it! |
Even when the musical version of this came out I was bored with. I had trouble following it even though I love Hugh Jackman. Manga Classics simplifies the tale without sacrificing the emotional impact. Like the rest of the entries in the series, the art is beautiful and helps make an emotional impact during the story. Manga Classics is helping me enjoy the stories I would never have read in traditional book form. |
I will be honest, I have never read a manga before, but as my first, I am extremely happy with this one. A lot of people, don't actually end up reading the original Les Miserables, as it is a behemoth. But having read that, I'd have to say that this adaptation was not only crisp, but also heart warming. The manga illustrations were absolutely beautiful. This managed to skilfully simplify the writing and storyline without taking away much from the original book, which overall makes it an easier and more enjoyable read. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who isn't really heavy reader, but would appreciate the storyline and graphics. |
I'd say it took a little while to get started, and then some to get into. Whilst the book has done an admirable job converting the story from the book, keeping the important parts and leaving others out (though I must say I missed the 50 pages on the Paris sewer system), I found some things were yet to be desired from the art style, as well as from the artistic choises made when adapting the script to the graphic style. It always feels a bit risky to start a visual adaptation of work you already know, and I fear, this was simply not for me. |
This was a really good manga adaptation of Victor Hugo’s Les Miserables. Having read the original book, listened to the musical and watched all the various adaptations, I really felt the soul of Les Mis in this manga. The artwork was absolutely brilliant and it was easy to read as a manga. |
I received a copy of Manga Classics: Les Miserables from NetGalley in exchange for a fair and honest review. I’ve read a few of the Manga Classics by now, and I’m still in love with the concept. Translating the classics into manga is a brilliant idea, with an end result of more accessibility and beautiful artwork. It’s a win-win if you ask me. I can’t wait to continue my read through of this gorgeous series! For those unfamiliar with Manga Classics, they are not a retelling but an adaptation. I’ve read enough of them by now to say that I trust Stacy King implicitly on her handling of the subject matter. She stays true to the plot and tone of the story, while condensing it down into 300 to 350 pages. Combined with artwork that is aesthetically pleasing and is depicting the scenes accurately (the characters look like I’d expect them to, the scenery matching the descriptions in the original, etc). Les Miserables is probably the most gut-wrenching of the Manga Classics series. Seriously, if you’re going to read this, be ready to cry. Seeing the characters emotions (as opposed to simply reading them) will rend your heart in twain. I thought I was prepared for the ending (having seen the play), but let me assure you that I was not. Apparently there’s no way to prepare for all the feels that Les Miserables will drop upon you. Don’t let that scare you off though – despite the fact that it will, in no uncertain terms make you cry, it is wholly worth reading and experiencing. |

4-* The right words to describe this book is: graceful. While not possessing Hugo's "Les Misérables" intensity and completeness (Ed.: but no adaptations has that power), this Manga Classics' volume is well-adapted and, in the end, it results to be a lovely reading. I liked the drawings very much: in my opinion, the art is really delightful as well as realistic in portraying the society of the time. The only point I want to make is that I recommend this manga to those who have already read Hugo's original opera: there are some elements introduced very quickly and, besides, some scenes appear to go too fast. If there had been a hundred (or even fifty) pages more, surely many aspects would have been treated better, although I think the authors have succeeded in their intent, as I really enjoyed reading this graphic adaptation. The historical background, on the other hand, is well-explained and the story itself is absolutely understandable... but, yes, a reader of Hugo will appreciate it more. My eyes sparkled in seeing represented some particular passages and I couldn't stop myself from singing the musical's songs! To me, it's a Yes! Thanks to NetGalley for providing me a copy in exchange for an honest review. |

I received this book from Netgalley in return for an unbiased review Out of all of the Manga Classics I have read, this is by far my favorite and the book that is closest to the original story. It is always hard to sum up a lengthy book in a 345 page manga without glossing over some details, but Manga Classics: Les Misérables comes very close. I went in with low expectations because of the previous Manga Classics: Sense & Sensibility, Jane Eyre, and The Scarlet Letter, but I was extremely satisfied with how they portrayed every character in this book. |
This is one of the best classic stories I've read so far. and thanks to this graphic novel that I was able to read the entire story of Les Miserables. I watched the movie, and have read the story; and now, I'm looking forward to be able to see in person the musical in the future. I may also add that while reading the part of Eponine's unrequited love, I can't help myself from singing On My Own – my favorite song in the musical – especially on the part where she always see Cosette and Marius together. Just like me, I think a lot of readers would be able to sympathized with her because once or twice in their life, they have experienced Eponine's predicament. |
This is an amazing adaptation of Victor Hugo's classic novel! The author and artist have done a wonderful job keeping the mystery and intrigue with the twists and turns of this tale true to the story. With that said please read the full length classic novel before/after reading this so you can see the creators entire vision. I have read several Manga Classics by Udon and they never cease to amaze and delight me. Using the Manga medium for these stories is genius and creates interest in reading the classics for younger generations. People that might otherwise forego reading a classic will give it a chance. This story is about Jean Valjean, a convict who is given another chance in life even though a determined detective won't stop pursuing him. Don't want to spoil anything but this is one of my favorite classic novels and I was very happy with this adaptation. |
Manga is such a fun way to revisit these classic stories. Also the graphics are gorgeous! |
My students would love this book. They enjoy reading graphic novels and I love when they read something of merit. |
Great as always! I love the manga classics, they are such an easy way to consume classic literature with beautiful illustrations. I can't recommend this series enough! |
For me, there are so many classic novels that I want to read in my lifetime. Some of them are short, some of them are long. However, it is almost always guaranteed that they are a little harder to read than your average book today. Therefore, this is why Manga classics is such a good idea. Not only can we understand these amazing stories, we can also use them as a foundation of knowledge that we can all use for when we read the originals. I also think that this is a great book for those with a limited English speaking ability or those learning the language. I can only hope that they will publish more of this fantastic manga novels! |
