I debated between three and four stars for this manga. The art was lovely and I enjoyed the story enough to finish it quickly. Cosette was easily the loveliest drawn but I also liked how Jarvert and Eponine were drawn as well. Unfortunately, I think this manga could have done with being longer, or being split into two volumes due to the sheer size of the story they were adapting. Several things were skipped over very quickly, I felt, like the revolution and the reveal at the end, and I think the book lost something because of it. That said, I did still enjoy it. |
I loved this book. I haven't read the actual Les Mis. yet, so this was a great way for me to see what goes on it and see if I'm interested. The illustrations were engaging and really added to the story. This wasn't too long and I feel like people with a short attention span could read this without a problem. A would recommend this. 5 out of 5 stars. |
You can find my full review of this title over at https://anovelloveblog.wordpress.com/ (it will be going live on 26th July 2017 at 10am GMT) But here are some snippets from my review: I found that the language simplification didn’t have a negative impact on the plot, but I did notice that some scenes have been moved around in the timeline. The drama and passion from the characters and their motivations was displayed beautifully and really helped keep the pace and interest alive. I really think this adaptation would have benefited greatly from being a multi-volume story, rather than having the artist and writer try to fit this marathon tale into one reasonably small volume. This is yet another beautifully illustrated adaptation from Udon Entertainment. Purist’ fans aren’t likely to enjoy this. But if you’re open minded to an adaptation to a different style of storytelling I think that this adaptation of Les Misérables will be a beautiful experience. |

“Nobody loves the light like the blind man.” ― Victor Hugo, Les Misérables I like the idea of turning Classics into Manga, I didn't read the original book. I know the story only through watching the movie, many of my friends LOVED the movie and they were hyped so much that I ended up disappointed after watching it. For those like me who can not simply risk reading a 1463 pages long book and end up disappointed, this is an amazing alternative, we can read this fast and get to know the story! I know I will be reading the Manga versions of Pride and Prejudice and Jane Eyre because I don't have a single clue about them. I rated the book 3 stars as there were some very cheesy pages that can't be ignored. |
Very tactfully done. I'm in love with this series of graphic novels. |

Loved this! It is difficult to fit this story into the 10 chapters, but I enjoyed what was included. |
The overall script of the manga is faithful to the original novel, but it is probably the weakest comic in the series in terms of artwork. Still a pleasurable read for young audiences. |
Les Miserables is a classic, albeit a long-winded, complicated story. This manga version is not only beautifully illustrated, but it skillfully simplifies the plot without taking away from the overall themes and characters. One can tell a lot of thought went into this edition. |
I have only heard great things about the book before but I have never had the chance to read it because I know that the story it's going to be sad and left me with a question mark in my head that our justice system is flawed. Really flawed. But I read it anyway albeit it is in the form of manga, it still makes me sad. I'm glad that at least Marius and Cosette get their happy ending in the end especially Cosette, how poor girl had suffered so much. |
This manga brought tears to my eyes, and I think everything was shown really well. |

This book as a manga version was a very famous story was on point, it was a mixture of what actually happen in the book versus what happen in the movie, it was a pretty good mixture of both.. And I love how the story flowed so neatly with the dialogue going on in the small bubbles alongside the beautiful, but simplistic black,a nd white artwork. It was also very interesting to be introduced to Eponine's younger sister, who was cut off from the musical version of Les Miserables, she was a cute version to add And it was surprising that the Therendiers were next door neighbors to poor Marius (a double entendre pun here hehe). When in the musical they were hiding in this shed/tent home place pretending they had a baby to take care of, when in actuality they didn't have a baby, so that was a nice change to see.. And its interesting to see that Marius in the manga found Eponine wounded in an alleyway instead of her being nearby the barricade, and rescuing Marius, while getting to him, and his friends. As you see from my examples there are slight difference from the musical, and the manga version, and I can only guess they come from the book version that I have surprisingly have never read before. Also one last thing, it was also very cool seeing how much of an effect Cosette had on Val Jean her father figure, and watching her growing up unlike in the musical we see them meeting each other, and ten minutes after that we a full grown Cosette, so it was nice watching her grow up somewhat in the manga. So it was a total honor, and pleasure to read this manga based on one of the most famous stories of all times Les Miserables |
Somehow, I've never been a huge fan of Les Mis, but this manga changed my mind! For the first time, I actually enjoyed reading this classic story! The artwork really brings the story to life, and enhances the characters so much. I loved seeing cute little Cosette when she's a tiny little girl, and the brave and generous Jean Valjean striving to protect her. Seeing the expressions on their faces made them more real and relatable. The story is full of action and suspense, and that is reflected excellently in the art panels. The writing is really brilliant, especially since it can't be easy to condense such a complicated story into this format. In just a few words, the characters' deep motivations are laid bare to the reader. The plot is easily understood without losing any of its multiple layers of meaning and emotion. I loved it so much!! I read it all in one sitting, and I can't wait to read more of these Manga Classics. I love the traditional storyline and I absolutely love that it was made into a manga. It keeps with the traditional story while adding illustrations to keep even the most fearful reader engaged. It reads like the traditional manga style while keeping with the storyline of the book. It is absolutely amazing and the illustrations are perfect. I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone that loves the classic but wants to read them with a twist. |
A big thank you to Udon Entertainment and Netgalley for this free copy in exchange for an unbiased review. Since it's manga I've already had a sneak peek at the animation scrolling to the beginning, and it's just so striking! Absolutely superb! This was the first manga I've ever read and I found the format very easy to follow. This WAS Les Mis at its finest. I cried at all of the spots I typically break down. Fantine breaks my heart. I can't help it. I felt her despondency and heartbreak in these illustrations. The same at the barricade and at the end when Valjean is reunited with Cosette. Just perfect depictions. The plot was spot on and I am verging on saying that if someone was assigned this in a lit class you could just about get away with reading this version and passing a test. This book has opened a door into a new genre for me. I'm really interested in looking for more classics given this treatment. I'm just so impressed. Great job! |
*** Disclaimer: I received a copy from the author/publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review *** Rating:4/5 Okay so out of the three Manga Classics that I requested from Netgalley this was my most anticipated one. I am obsessed with Les Miserable and I have watched every movie adaptation and musical out there. I have gone to see the musical in person in 2015 and I listen to the soundtrack regularly. I'm complete Les Mis trash XD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The only thing I haven't done is read the original work because it is a behemoth HOWEVER that doesn't mean that I never will. Its one of the only classics I still wish to read the original version of. So you know that I had to listen to the 25th anniversary edition soundtrack while reading this and once the initial track came on I was in the zone. I opened the manga and instead of being in Toulon I was reading the back story of Fantine meeting the Mr.and Mrs. Thenardier. I was a bit taken aback at first but realized that this was a great way to start the story off too and it answered some questions about how Fantine met them. With my expectations now set that this was not going to be a manga version of the musical, I continued to read. The art was of course beautiful and the overall plot was told well but it did introduce a side character that I never knew about which was Eponine's sister Azelma and it revealed Gavrosh as (view spoiler). I would have like to know more about both of these relationships in the book and maybe get a bit more overall background on the Thenardiers as a family. Of course doing so would have brought this manga to a page count I was anticipating it to be. I was honestly shocked that the the page count was shorter than 400 pages. Les Mis is like 1500 pages unabridged and to compress it to this size was probably no easy feat. I throughly enjoyed this version of the story anyways and if they had added that information about the Thenardiers this would have been a 5 star read. I still think Les Mis is best enjoyed as a musical but this comes in as a close second. If you've seen the musical, tell me your fave character and song in the comments below. Happy Reading Jo |
I'm so glad I was introduced to this beautiful story by this book. The art was beautiful and did a wonderful job conveying the story. Les Miserables is a classic, and artists deserve credit for making the work accessible for all ages. I had qualms with a slight disconnect between different chapters, and some characters were drawn very similar to the others. I found that the part relating to the Revolution were not given enough space, and it went by too fast to leave real impact. However, the book was done very well otherwise and the story is definitely great, so I'll still give it five stars. I understand there certainly are issues adapting literature from a very different genre and time period, but the artists did it really well. It was a good read, and I'm planning to read their Pride and Prejudice soon. |
This is a beautiful adaptation of "Les Miserables." The art is beautiful, the story pacing is perfect, and though there are some changes in the plot, the story did have to be adapted to fit the manga format. The amount of detail put into the artwork and story is impressive, and I look forward to more Manga Classics. |
I have always loved the movie Beauty and the beast. I love that manga came out with a graphic novel for the live adaption of the film. As always the illustrations are beautiful and full of life. The book was a very quick light read. I read it in one sitting which only took an hour. We got to see a little bit of what happens after the happily ever after which I think is really cool. I wonder if the entranchess is Belle's mother. This book does not disappoint. Now I am off to read the Beast's tale |
*Spoilers have to pay outrages fees to the Thenardier 's* 345 pages Fantine is a single mother in France, searching for a job. She soon learns that no one will hire a mother with an illegitimate child, and leaves her with an innkeeper, and his family, while she continues to look for work. Jean Valjean is a convict, newly released from prison , and on parole, looking for a place to stay, and a way to make a living. But no one is willing to let a criminal be anywhere near them. A kindly priest gives Valjean a place to stay, as well as the church's silver. Valjean uses this silver to become an honest man. Fantine has found work in a small town, with a prosperous factory, and a kindly mayor. I give this 14 out of 15 pages turned. While I did enjoy this it wasn't quite what I was expecting. I really enjoyed the art. It is always fun to see beloved characters come to life. It was nice to see a different plot than what is usually seen in other adaptations. Because the plot was different, it didn't include some of my favorite plot points from the original, so it left me wanting a little bit. I recommend this to those who want to read the original story, but don't want to wade through the brick of a book, that is the original.
