Thomas clarifies the biblical basis for the Reformed claim that salvation is by faith alone, not by works. The book is organized thematically, employing a four‑fold exegesis of key New Testament passages—especially Romans, Galatians, and Titus—while tracing the historical development from the early church to the Reformation and beyond. Thomas argues that justification is a divine act of grace, activated through faith, and that the Law serves to point toward Christ’s righteousness. Strengths of the book include rigorous scholarship, historical breadth, and clear focus; its limitations lie in limited engagement with contemporary denominational debates and an overreliance on Paul’s writings. Overall, the book is an accessible, academically grounded resource that deepens readers’ appreciation of the doctrine’s biblical and theological foundations.

I found that with this volume you needed to know more about Christianity to understand some of the concepts put forth...and the ideology.
