A vengeful hero and a stubborn heroine.

Edward Westover, the new Duke of Strathmore and Katherine Benton were brought together by unhappy circumstances. Edward was exacting revenge from Phillip Benton, the man responsible for the death of his brother and sister-in-law, by stripping the gambler of everything he possessed. But he got more than he bargained for in the person of 20-year-old Kate, who unwittingly became his ward as part of Benton's payment.

They attempted to repress their obvious mutual affection. It took a life-and-death situation for them to realise that they are destined to be together.

This is not my favourite trope but I admire the heroine's respect for the gift of life.
