I don't know why it took me so long to read this book because it grabbed me from the very beginning and kept me interested! I liked the idea of repeating a year and think the authors did it well.

If you were given the opportunity to relive a year in your life when something significant happened to set you down a particular path what would you do differently. Jessie, Gabriela and Claire are offered such an opportunity - to return to the year they turned forty and have a chance to change their future. The three women soon discover that reliving that fateful year and making different decisions, causes it’s own consequences, and not necessarily the positive changes to their futures that they were wishing for.

A light, heartwarming glimpse into the strength of female relationships. I look forward to reading more from this talented duo.

I was intrigued by the premise of this title; however, this is a book that I sadly was not able to connect with and therefore did not finish.

I really enjoyed this story. I found that this book grabbed my interest right from the start and was a rather solid read until the very end. I found that I wanted the best for these three women and hoped that the choices that they were making would work out for them. I wondered what I would do if I were thrust into the same situation that they were presented with and still haven't decided on an answer.

Jesse, Claire, and Gabriela have been best friends for years and have always celebrated their birthdays together. The celebration for their fortieth birthday was one of the more memorable parties since it ended with Jesse going into labor with her son, Lucas. Fast forward ten years and the trio is celebrating their fiftieth in Las Vegas where they are given the chance to go back and relive the year they turned forty.

I loved the concept behind this story. Who doesn't have things in their past that they would love to go back and change? I know I could compile a rather long list of things I wish I had done differently without a problem. These three ladies all of have major things that they want to change. Jesse wants to save her marriage, which fell apart after the birth of her son. Gabriela wants to have a baby. Claire wants to save her mother who died from cancer that year. The changes that they are making create such an impact that other unexpected changes start occurring and they have no idea how to handle everything.

I liked these three characters. They were all flawed and made some pretty big mistakes in their lives. I found Jesse and Claire to be my favorites of the group. Gabriela was so focused on her single goal of having a baby that she pushed everything else aside. Jesse wasn't able to change the biggest obstacle to saving her marriage but she could change how she handled things. I wasn't always happy with the choices she was making but I understood why she made them. Claire had a lot to deal with and I understood her desperation to save her mother and improve her relationship with her daughter.

This was my first experience listening to Lisa Larsen's narration but I think she was a great choice for this story. She was able to capture these three characters along with all of the emotions that they were experiencing. I found her voice to be very pleasant and I had no problems listening to her for hours at a time.

I would recommend this book to others. I thought that this was a thought-provoking story of three friends trying to repair some of the mistakes in their lives. There were no easy fixes in this story and all of the changes they accomplished took a lot of hard work. I wouldn't hesitate to read more from this talented writing pair in the future.

I received a digital review copy of this book from Atria Books via NetGalley and borrowed a copy of the audiobook from my local library via Hoopla.

choices of all…

If you could repeat one year of your life, what would you do differently? This novel tells the story of three best friends who get to do just that — they return to the year they turned forty, the year everything changed, to relive it. Can they correct the mistakes of the past, or will they relive heartbreak all over again?

Jessie is still heartbroken over her divorce, and her ex-husband has just told her he’s getting remarried. Her marriage ended when she revealed the truth about her son’s paternity. She felt strongly that she should be honest, but she ended up losing what she was trying to protect. Can she go back and repair her marriage?

Gabriela is a successful author with a loving husband, but she regrets that she never had children. Can she finally have the family she’s longer for, or will her quest to be a mother destroy everything?

Claire’s life seems to be going well — she’s finally made peace with her past, and her now-grown daughter is thriving. But Claire has regrets about the past, especially the man she let get away. Can she hang on to him this time around?

This book is told from each woman’s perspective in turn, which is interesting. I loved the premise of this book, and the drama of the unfolding storylines in each woman’s life means this book is anything but dull. If anything, there’s a little too much going on. Some of the nuance of each woman’s story gets lost in a sometimes cluttered narrative.

There are, however, laugh-out-loud moments and truly touching scenes as well. The struggle of each woman is beautifully rendered and you will feel their losses and heartbreaks keenly.

This was an entertaining, fun read, even if the 3 intertwined plot lines did muddle things a bit. I flew through, staying up late turning pages, and I was pleased with the ending. If you’re a reader who’s ever had thoughts about reliving your past, regrets about circumstances and people, or wanting a do-over, then this book is definitely for you.

I really liked this. I like how the authors kept time travel rules very simple and just expected their readers to roll with the possibility that we could go back in time. I also like that it wasn't so easy to undo past mistakes and new mistakes were often made in place of old ones. And some hurts and wounds cannot be fixed either but must be endured.

Sometimes having a great life is not enough. Jessie, Gabriela and Claire have great lives but they have also made mistakes and wouldn’t mind a “do over”. Who wouldn’t? The main characters have been best friends for years and have supported each other through good and bad times. They have celebrated every birthday together, but this one is different. They are turning fifty.
Jessie has twin daughters and a son. One night of infidelity ends her marriage but gives her a son. If she had it to do over again, would she tell her husband the truth? Gabriela, a famous author, chooses her career over children. If she could do it again, would she convince her husband to have a child with her? Claire, also divorced, has given in to her daughter’s every whim, creating a spoiled brat. She has also kept Emily from getting to know her father. Could knowing her father change Emily’s life? If Claire could do it again, would she keep this secret from Emily?
The three friends are given the opportunity to find out. They can go back to relive the year they turned forty, but there are some conditions. The question is, will they do it? If they do, will their lives be changed for the better?
I love time travel novels and this one is no exception. I love the references to ”old school” technology. You completely forget how far we have come with the internet, cell phones and apps. The characters are at times whiny and spoiled but you do empathize with them, because let’s face it, we have all made mistakes. Great lessons are taught through this novel about honesty, family and not taking anything for granted. I thoroughly enjoyed The Year We Turned Forty by Liz Fenton and Lisa Steinke and give it a strong recommendation!

2 stars, did not really care for this book. It is hard to do a story where people relive their life in a different way well and this book was much like the rest of the ones in the genre.

Hands down this is one of my favorite books of 2016! I can't praise it enough! Liz and Lisa have developed such amazing characters and the plots with each are so richly detailed and displayed.
As I get older, 37 as of today actually, I find myself wondering, "What would I do differently if I could go back to say my twenties and live one year again". Would I do it? Honestly, I don't think I would. Yes I am sure that there are pieces I would like to change, but go through all those emotional situations again, I'm good I think. LOL
These three best friends have amazing relationships and have really been through some trials together. The year they turned 40 was big for them. Now the real question is, at the age of 50, should they return to when they turned 40 and try and reverse their mistakes?
Jessie mad a grave mistake that could ruin her marriage and distance her children from her for years to come...Will she be alone or save her marriage?
Gabriela has been so focused on her career that she has forgotten about having children and the joy that could bring to her and Collin's life...Is is too late?
Claire has been a single mom since well forever. She has raised Emily alone practically all of her life and Emily has the attitude to show for her mother giving in to her every whim. What will become of their relationship?
So many questions and a year to live over again...Will 12 months be enough time to change each of their lives for the better or will returning to the past change the course of all their futures?
And at the end, they will have to decide if they all want to stay in the past and continue forward or go back to where they had came from in the future? It's all or nothing...What would you do?

Thank you to Net Galley and Atria Books for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
What would you do if you were given the chance to live a year over and try to right all the mistakes you think you made and change the way your year went? That's the chance best friends Jessie, Clarie and Gabriela get, a chance to relive their 40th year and see how everything would change if they made different choices. Will things turn out for the better? Or will new choices lead to new problems?
This was an enjoyable read. Liz Fenton and Lisa Steinke always focus on strong female friendships and relationships, and this book is no exception. A little bit of humor, heartache, magic and friendship make for a good mix in this book.
