Ruth Ware did not disappoint in her newest book. A thrilling ride that I could not out down and an ending I did not see coming. Absolutely superb.

I am really confused about the rating for this book. I think I settled on a 3.5 stars. One thing was that all the reviews I had read had me thinking great things and then it was not great. It is a good read, but not a great one.

Laura, Lo, Blacklock works as a writer for a travel magazine. When her boss ends up under the weather due to pregnancy, Lo is given the opportunity to go on a cruise for a a new luxury ship, the Aurora Borealis, and write an article for the magazine. Sounds wonderful. From the beginning, Lo has one rotten experience after another. The night before she is to leave, her apartment is broken into with her in it. Getting no sleep, being hungover and suffering PTSD, her cruise does not get off to a good start. Once again, drinking a bit too much the first night on board, she has a fitful sleep. Waking in the middle of the night, she hears a splash and when she runs out to her balcony, she is sure she sees a body sinking under the water. Sure it is the woman in the cabin next door, she calls security. When the chief of security listens to her story, he takes her to Cabin 10, which they find clean and empty. Lo is confused as she had knocked in the door earlier in the evening and met her neighbour. No one believes what she is sure she saw, so forgetting about the reason she is on the ship, she begins to ask questions and snoop around. Trouble has no trouble finding Lo.

I do not want to give away anymore of the plot, but suffice it to say, Lo is going to have more than her share of difficulties on this cruise. The suspense builds quite nicely, then quickly switches gears and comes to a quick end. Lo realizes that she needs to be strong and fight for herself because no one else is around to help her. The secondary characters are not really fleshed out, but that is okay as they are only supporting characters. A book that will hook you, if only to find our what happens to Lo.

Great book - If you liked Girl on the Train, you will like this one. The main character was more likable that the one in Girl on the Train, however!

For the first two thirds or so of this book, all I kept saying to myself was, "So, it's basically Girl on a Train, but on a boat." Lo reminded me A LOT of that book's protagonist, and many of the peripheral characters seemed familiar. I was definitely not as hooked on this as I was on Ware's previous book, In a Dark, Dark Wood.

The big twist did come as a surprise to me, so that was its redeeming factor. Even still, the plot was very weak in certain areas. It's good that this was a quick read because I don't think I would've stuck with it until it got good otherwise.

Who doesn't like a good unreliable narrator? This is one book I would not mind comparing to a claustrophobic Girl on the Train. It also seems like a modern twist of an older book. Instead of a train, we are treated to a cruise ship. At least with a train, you can hop off. This is like a big boat that is taking you hostage. I have always has a mistrust of cruises, and this does not help my comfort level. It is kinda like being trapped in the woods where no one can hear you scream, you are terrified and want to leave, but sorry. That ain't happening.

While I loved this book, and will gladly recommend it, I was not all that pleased with the ending, but it seems like I rarely am. My own mind comes up with some crazy ones that could spice things up.

I gave this book a lot longer to get good than I usually do because someone recommended it, and even after that it never actually hooked me. The writing was simplistic and felt overthought. Once the general plot was established, it took way too long for the story to progress. Overall just a lackluster story.

I was really disappointed in this book. It started out as a strong, engaging story about a wannabe travel journalist's big chance covering the maiden voyage of a luxury yacht. She's the victim of a terrifying home invasion that I thought the author would come back around to, but she never did. It took way too long to get to the end of the story. There were too many bland characters with few unique characteristics to help keep them straight in the reader's mind. The ending was far-fetched and disappointing.

"The first inkling that something was wrong was waking in darkness to find the cat pawing at my face."

At first I was very excited by the way this book was flowing. In the beginning it felt a little like reading Agatha Christie, but unfortunately that didn’t continue. I will admit there were moments where I couldn’t put it down. I kept expecting some really great twist, but I was let down with how little imagination and suspense was put into the ending.

After I suspended disbelief, I enjoyed this mystery. In general, it actually started out pretty good for me, then it got a little far-fetched. I was curious enough to know what really was going on and am glad I did. It wasn't anything special, but a decent audioread.

The Woman in Cabin Ten is the last book I read in 2016 that I couldn't put down. I enjoyed that the main character has a dark side and that she is not a typical female character. Much like Gillian Flynn's treatment of female characters, Ware's protagonist is gritty, dark, and troubled. She is doing everything she can to hold tightly to reality and not let others convince her that she is losing her grip.
