A Time of Torment Charlie Parker Book 14 by John Connolly

481 Pages
Publisher: Atria Books, Atria/Emily Bestler Books
Release Date: August 2, 2016

Fiction, Mystery, Thriller, Private Detective, Survivalists

Charlie Parker is still on the mend. He has changed since the attack that nearly took his life. He is contacted by Jerome Burnel and asked to take his case. Charlie asks him to tell him the story. Jerome was a diamond and precious gems salesman. One night, he stops on his way home at a roadside restaurant. While he is eating, men come into the restaurant and attempt to rob it. Jerome takes matters into his hands and fights back. He is considered a hero. Time goes by and he is arrested on a child pornography charge. He denies the claim and believes he was et up as retribution for his role in thwarting the robbery.

Shortly after telling this story to Charlie Parker, he goes missing. Charlie Parker travels to Jerome’s hometown. He wants to get a feel for the man. He finds an isolated area known as The Cut where a group of survivalists live. They do not allow anyone else on their property. Charlie Parker has a feeling there is a connection with this group of people and Jerome’s disappearance. He just has to prove it.

There are several stories going on within the book. The author does a good job tying them all together. The story has a steady pace, the characters are developed, and it is written in two different perspectives. If you like mysteries with a twist, you will enjoy this book.

Thank you to NetGalley and Atria Books For an advanced copy of this ebook in exchange for an honest review.

A long living book on my shelf and to read this , I finally got around to this one. First I regret jumping into the middle/end of a series, I never do that and this was a good reason why. I did find the book interesting and easy enough to follow , yet having the history and background info would be helpful.. A long and detailed, developed story I found this one interesting but left me feeling bored at times with stories I wasn’t familiar with.
One a positive note, it left me wanted to start at book 1.

This is a series. To fully understand Charlie Parker, start at the beginning and enjoy the ride.
John Connolly is an excellent evocative writer.

I requested this before I realized it was part of a series. I would have loved to read this, but I like to be invested in the complete series before reading one of the books out of order. Thank you for the early access though!

Ehhhhh… not a big fan, I might be in the minority here. Found it difficult to stay invested in this tale, was not a big fan of the characters - could not finish and that’s saying a lot for me. I will keep my eyes peeled for more of this author and try them again though.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for this ARC opportunity though!

Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC of this work.

This is one of a series of Charlie Parker books. This may be the best one I've read. JC books are a tad different that many crime series books. I do think anyone reading this will get hooked! Highly recommend to all.

A Time of Torment by John Connolly is an action-packed roller coaster. The Charlie Parker series just keeps getting better and better. The added supernatural touch adds just that right amount of combination of fun and creepy. This is a series you need to read.

I did not realize this was a paranormal series. I do not read this genre at all. That being said, John Connolly is an amazing writer and this story is creepy and gives you goose bumps as it tells the story of PI Charlie Parker, Jerome Burnel, and this really weird/violent group of folks out in the Cut. Not a place we want to visit, mind you. Excellent writing in a personally unexpected place.

Dark and Creepy! I was not expecting the intensity of the paranormal aspect, but in the best possible way. A Time of Torment really turned me on to John Connolly and his Charlie Parker series, it was so good and different from your usual detective novel.

Unique, intense and creepy! The Cut aspect was so well done and I was sucked in immediately. Charlie Parker is an antihero you hope for and his sidekicks Louis and Angel make quite a trio for fighting evil. I’m intrigued to see how Parker’s daughters tie in to the series as a whole as it continues to progress. And that ending! Whoa. Loved it.

I love this series and this installment was especially good. The characters are so strong and well developed. Charlie is flawed and realistic and he is one of my favorites. It just keeps getting better and better.
Many thanks to Atria Books and to NetGalley for providing me with a galley in exchange for my honest opinion.

What a fascinating book. I was impressed by the storyline and the characters were all well written and complex. Where there are complex storylines combined with intriguing characters the reader experience is magnified tremendously. To have a book that is well written as well as entertaining is a delight. Reading is about escaping your world and entering another one. The word building was phenomenal in this book. Here I forgot about my own life and was immersed in the world created by the author. I would recommend this book.

A TIME OF TORMENT is the 14th Charlie Parker novel.

A must-read for fans of Connolly's long-running, excellent Charlie Parker series. Like many of the novels in the series, it can be read alone, although I'd recommend you read the rest because they're excellent.

Displays all of the hallmarks of an excellent Connolly novel: well-paced, dark, excellent characters, paranormal crime and mystery.

Definitely recommended.

John Connolly’s Charlie Parker series is crime with a supernatural twist. And deliciously so, because the prose is just so good. Former NYPD cop turned occult private detective, Parker has to confront evil once again in the form of an isolated group of villagers called The Cut. The men rule through terror and serve a god they call The Dead King. The final showdown is, as always, riveting.

When I requested this book I didn't realize at the time that it was #14 in a series I haven't read. Since I don't like reading series books out of order, I prefer not to review or rate this book. I apologize for the inconvenience.

I thank NetGalley and Atria books for the digital copy they provided me.

I never received this book, even though NetGalley said I was approved, it never appeared in my dashboard. Except under feedback not sent. Can't send a review of soemthing I never received/read!

I did not read this book--I requested it by mistake not realizing it is science fiction, not my genre. I apologize.

A really great thriller, but not the kind that I normally read, so it wasn't really to my liking but there will definitely be an audience for this one. Things I like: great characters, a thrilling ride through the plot, and just overall great writing. What I didn't like: the Deliverance type feeling of the setting, locale, and local characters. There is also some sort of occult, mysticism, or something like that that runs strong through the course of the book and I'm not a huge sci-fi person and this leans a bit to that dislike. But if you like plots with that, then you will probably love this book.

I had no idea this was a series, and have now gone and purchased book one. What a wonderfully dark and fabulous paranormal crime/mystery novel. Yes, I love the genre, and the book didn't disappoint at all! So sorry it took me so long; it got lost in my TBR list!

Although I did not read the previous books in the series, I was able to follow along. The beginning felt a little slow for me, but it could be my lack in history with the characters. There were references to previous events that took a little bit of connecting but were connected all the same. However towards the middle of the book, the pacing started to pick up and made it quite interesting. This made me want to actually pick up the series and start from the beginning.

I had trouble getting in to this book. It just wasn't my cup of tea.
The premise sounded good, a man who has encountered more than his fair share of trouble in the past telling his story to another man.
I was confused by the Grey Man and just couldn't continue.
I think this is more my problem than a problem with the book as I saw quite a few good reviews.
