Basic Training of the Heart was quite a nice romance novel. Set during WWII, it takes us through the lives of Private Elizabeth ‘Bett’ Carlton, Sergeant Gale Rains, a drill instructor at the WAC, and Bett’s fellow recruits. I enjoyed most of the novel. The characters were quite diverse in background and personality. I liked learning about the struggles and training the women went through in the military. The last few chapters seemed to go off on a tangent and this is where I disassociated with the story. I personally thought too much happened within the last handful of chapters. Also, it was convenient that the love scenes, whilst in abundance, were rushed into the last few chapters when Bett had moved off base. Coincidence? I doubt it. All in all a nice first novel by Jaycie Morrison and I'd certainly read the author's future work. 3.5 stars |

I just loved the history of the WAC and how two women found love for each other. I highly recommend this book and can't wait to read the next chapter in Bett and Rains love for each other. |

I loved reading about the W.A.C it made me want to learn more about women in the military in this time in history. The story was well researched and the descriptions of bootcamp and military life was very interesting. Characterwise I really didn't like Elizabeth at first but loved learning more about Rain. Their chemistry was a little lacking but I ended up liking them together towards the end of the book. I was more invested in secondary characters and am happy this is a series I hope Helen's story is up next. Rating 3 of 5 I received this book from Bold Strokes Books for an honest review. |
