Description
“Can you actually find spiritual truths in comicbooks and superhero movies?”
Yes, you can!
For more than 75 years of comic book history and dozens of gigantic cinematic releases, Superheros have captivated our imagination--filling our senses with heart-pounding adventures, riveting plots, and spectacular special effects—and sometimes they have profound messages woven into them. Often the underlying themes reveal a Judeo-Christian influence, and even when it isn’t intentional, you can still draw deep lessons from them. Whether it’s the self-sacrifice and humility of Captain America and the Hulk’s struggles with anger or the parallels between Superman and Jesus or between Black Widow and a ruthless Bible heroine, your favorite heroes and heroines (and even villains) have much to teach.
If you’re a fan of this good vs. evil world, you will love The Superheroes Devotional—featuring 60 interesting, challenging, and encouraging readings. With devotions drawn from dozens of favorite superheroes from both the Marvel and DC Comics universes—well-known names like Captain America and Batman and lesser-known heroes like Shazam and Gambit—each reading includes spiritual lessons relating superheroes to the heroes of the Bible in themes like faith, hope, courage, pride, and power. You’ll also enjoy reading about the history and background of each superhero, shared by author and lifelong fan Ed Strauss.
Read on, True Believer, and may you draw inspiration and encouragement from the characters and stories that you know and love from comicbook pages and big screen movies alike.

At first, I thought this book was like other devotionals: equipped with one paragraph or two of some inspirational superhero themed story followed by a prayer and a Bible verse. As I read through the pages, I quickly realized that I was wrong. The Superheroes Devotional takes a closer look at the comicbook heroes we've read or seen in movies. Taking more support from film, the author focuses on each character, one at a time. And through each of their stories, whether origin or otherwise, he's found ways to pull out what lessons we can learn and how those lessons can already be found in the Bible. Review to go live 2/1/2017. Blending his love of comicbooks and the Bible, the author hopes to share his passion with others. This would be a good read for Middle School through High School and above. It isn't just an inspiring little story with some scripture. It is an all together unique devotional book. Honestly, it's just nice to have a book that focuses on the good and bad that these written heroes experience and how that, on a basic level, might apply to us. |

Used this with my teenage boys, who are both comic book geeks (self-confessed), they have enjoyed it thoroughly. I myself, enjoy devotional reading on culture intersecting faith, and found this a fun read which definitely provoked, thought, prayer and discussion with my boys. Great book. |

I. Loved. This. Devotional. I struggle with most devotionals because I find they have a "theme" but it seems very cliched and not really to theme. This one was really cool because it focused on a different comic character or thing and how that relates to Christianity and exactly what we can learn from them. I always love books that talk about "secular" things and how God can be glorified through them. This was a unique devotional in that there weren't specific verses to study each day and I actually really loved that. Would highly recommend to any comic fan! |

I like the way this book finds the good lessons in superhero stories. It's not really my kind of thing, but I have five sons who are superhero fans, so it is fun for me to read it and be able to pull the topics out for discussion. |

I am not a big non-fiction reader, yet this devotional held not only my attention but my kids (middle school age) ate it up as well. This book doesn’t dummy-down scripture but points out biblical truths and lessons within popular comic books and comic-inspired movies. Each section is about 3-4 pages long and the book is a bit smaller than an average trade paperback. Anyone, from a casual movie fan to the comic book fanatic, will enjoy reading through these 60 devotionals. I would highly recommend this book to comic enthusiasts of all ages for a fun and insightful look at our favorite heroes through the lens of faith. I requested the opportunity to read this book through the publisher. The opinions expressed are my own. |

My son is a huge superhero fan. He's the second biggest fan in the house -- second only to me. So when I saw this devotional book, I knew it was something we would BOTH enjoy. I love how the book ties in the mythology that the comic companies use without ever sacrificing Truth. I love how the book ties in even very obscure plotlines and gives them the respect they deserve while showing how they reflect God and His Word. The book is a very refreshing devotional, and is perfect for kids who love superheroes but don't always want to read their Bible. HIGHLY recommended. |
