As someone who hasn't seen the TV series, I felt a bit lost at first, but quickly got into the plot of this book. It took me into the English countryside with a cast of characters that range from the very seedy through divine. I did feel like I had missed some of the backstory, but still very much enjoyed this novel about one of my favorite periods. Highly recommended for fans of the TV series.
