Description

When Danish raids on Anglo-Saxon kingdoms escalate, the kings of these lands must put past hostilities aside and take the first steps towards unity; steps they see as vital in the face of this newfound threat to their lands . . .

As sons of kings, Alfred of Wessex and Eadwulf of Mercia have had their futures determined since birth. However, the unforeseen events will change the progression of their childhoods and shape the men they will become. While their roads to manhood follow vastly different routes, they both learn crucial lessons; lessons that will serve them well in the years to come. While discovering that the enemy is not always a stranger is a harsh lesson indeed, the realization that a trusted kinsman can turn traitor is the harshest lesson of them all.

Shadow of the Raven (Sons of Kings Book 1) by Millie Thom. A very complex and captivating tale with many facets.
The cast of characters are enjoyable and intriguing. The storyline flowed seamlessly and was well executed, in my opinion. The plot was interesting as well as intriguing.
Ms. Thom did an excellent job of conveying her message to her readers, with her descriptions, her characterizations, and her in depth information. Her research totally shines through in this story of romance, love and turmoil. I did feel it ended a bit abruptly. No cliffhanger, but a need to read the next one. An enjoyable read! I look forward to her next release in this fantastic series. Strongly recommended.
I received a complimentary copy, however, all opinions are my own.

The book made the period feel real to me while I was reading. There is no romanticising either the Danes or the Saxons. The gruesome and treacherous actions are not brushed away or forgotten. The need for vengeance has a prominent role on one side and distrust on the other. Both the Mercian court and Wessex courts are described and are parts of the story. Yet the change of different places (other than Mercia or Wessex) is not bothersome as everything is clearly marked, both with the place names and the year it is happening in. The story is believable and interesting and it is easy to understand and feel for the characters while following their story. It all seemed realistic. I do know that we do not know for sure what the real characters were like, so the author can adapt their personalities to suit their own story, and I found it convincing in this one.

Thank you so much to booksgosocial via netgalley for sending me an ARC copy of shadow of the raven by Millie Thom.

The kingdoms/rivals have to ban together in order to take down the greater enemy!

The story was beautifully written, with very descriptive and graphic scenes that really drew me into the world and kept me wanting more. (Good thing there is a book two). I really enjoyed the accurate historical facts and all the blood, gore and violence!
