Description

It starts with an itch you just can't shake. Then comes a fever and a tickle in your throat. A few days later, you'll be blabbing your secrets and chatting with strangers like they're old friends. Three more, and the paranoid hallucinations kick in.

And then you're dead.

When sixteen-year-old Kaelyn lets her best friend leave for school without saying goodbye, she never dreams that she might not see him again. Then a strange virus begins to sweep through her small island community, infecting young and old alike. As the dead pile up, the government quarantines the island: no one can leave, and no one can come back.

Cut off from the world, the remaining islanders must fend for themselves. Supplies are dwindling, fatalities rising, and panic is turning into violence. With no cure in sight, Kaelyn knows their only hope of survival is to band together. Desperate to save her home, she joins forces with a former rival and opens her heart to a boy she once feared.

But as the virus robs her of friends and family, Kaelyn realizes her efforts may be in vain. How can she fight an enemy that's too small to see?

Advance Praise

"Kaelyn is a strong, smart, believable female protagonist in a tense YA novel that focuses on character and situation... I really can't recommend this highly enough. It's a beautiful book." -New York Times bestselling author Seanan McGuire

"As hope wars with loss, this gripping psychological thriller never loses focus. Though Crewe's story can be gruesome and horrifying, she escapes the trap of making events too depressing and hopeless, maintaining a strong sense of realism throughout." -Publishers Weekly

"Crewe utilizes a less-is-more approach, subtly closing the walls in on the characters as they run out of resources... Readers will root for the believable characters struggling through heartbreaking situations." -Kirkus Reviews

"This is the kind of book that makes you look up in alarm when someone near you sniffles. It viscerally conveys the horror of sudden, brutal illness and the struggle between being humane and saving your own skin." -Booklist

This is my new favourite book! I loved every second of it! This book really did have everything! I thought it was impossible to fit deadly viruses, crime and romance into one novel, but here I am!
All the characters were perfect in their own flawed ways. Gav was my favourite character, misunderstood but truly kind at heart.

I honestly have no flaws for this book. All I can say is that I was practically jumping out of my seat at the good things and crying at the sad.
Thank you,net galley for letting me read this fantastic book.

I have had this book on my TBR for a long time and finally got around to reading it thanks to Netgalley. I could not put it down. It was unusual, but I got used to the journal entry type writing pretty easily. Not only that but the plot was incredible and kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time. Some people say that the tone was off and Kaelyn wasn't emoting much, but I thought it was just perfect.

I will break it down like this: The ploy was great. I love survival type stories of any kind. The writing was also perfect. I was enthralled and even though I kept on saying, one more chapter, I kept reading more and more.

I cannot wait to get my hands on the next books.
