Along the Road

In the beginning of the book, the author asks the reader how they organize the Bible when they read it - chronologically or topically - he then asks the reader if they have considered reading the Bible geographically, and he gives the reader examples of Biblical geography and how it is connected.
The author uses the examples in (2 Kings 4:8–37 and Luke 7:11–17) which relate to Elisha and Jesus, a time period that is separated by 850 years, yet the places mentioned - Shunem and Nain, are only a 25 minute walk from each other, but they take place on Mount Moreh only a mile apart!

Why did Jesus perform a miracle in this location?
How was the reaction of those who witnessed the miracle conditioned by what had happened here in Elisha’s day?
What can I learn by studying these two Bible stories together?”
Shunem is where Elisha raised the woman’s son from the dead - the son whom Elijah prophesied his mother would bear.
Nain was the place where Jesus raised the widows son from the dead!
Your eyes will be opened and your understanding will be deepened when you learn how to understand the Bible geographically - Jesus is revealed as God’s Son and the King by reading the passages in this book!
You will have an “aha” moment as you think, I have read these passages hundreds of times, now I see how they are connected - you will understand as the early Israelites did, as they walked through Israel that places and events are spiritually intertwined - enjoy!

"Along the Road" looks at different events in the Bible that happened in the same city or area. The author looked at the relationship between the different events and how people at the later event would have thought back to what happened there before. For example, Jesus raised a young man from the dead close to a city where a prophet also raised a young man from the dead, and the people called Jesus a prophet after the miracle.

The author looked at five types of geographic connections: fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies, tests where humans had failed but Jesus succeeded, places where Jesus confronted pagan strongholds, places that helped reveal Jesus as the Son of God, and how the location connected into the message that Jesus was preaching. The author summarized the events that happened at each place, the connections between them, what the landscape looked like, and where it was located. The book contains maps showing where these events occurred.

Each chapter takes about 5 to 10 minutes to read, so it would work well as a devotional. Overall, I highly recommend this interesting and insightful book.

I loved this book. I hadn't realised the connections between the times when different places are mentioned in the Bible, although I had heard about the connection between Abrahams offering Isaac back to God and Calvary. What a fascinating insight. I especially appreciated the bit about Palm Sunday.

Helpful and easy to read. I really enjoyed the stories that help frame Jesus’ teaching within their cultural context. Really enjoyed this book!
