The Gilded Wolves

SIX OF CROWS by way of THE LAST MAGICIAN, Roshani Chokshi's THE GILDED WOLVES is a decadent romp in 19th century Paris full of magic, adventure, and plenty of delight along the way. If, like me, you were on the fence about Chokshi's previous YA novels and hesitate in picking this one up, I'm here to tell you that you would be doing yourself a disfavor by skipping it. Imagination and wonder seeps through every lush page. You'll be hard-pressed to not immediately fall in love with this distinctive and diverse crew of characters that are flawed yet instantly root-able. You'll laugh at the banter, swoon at the romance, and seize with every tense moment as you race through catacombs and untangle the mysteries of legends and secret societies. THE GILDED WOLVES is the successor to SIX OF CROWS that I've been waiting for and it does not disappoint. The only question is: when can I get my hands on the next installment?

LOVED this book.  I can't wait for it to come out so that I can recommend it to my students.  I think it is a mix of Ocean's 11, James Bond, The DaVinci Code, and The Alchemyst series.  The history, religion, and political lessons woven into the fantasy of this book is very intelligent.  Students will love this fast-paced adventure.

This book, like Roshani's other books, is absolutely incredible . Her writing style is something I absolutely adore and I cannot wait to read more from this author.

The twists and turns of this breakneck-paced story had me wanting more. I loved the puzzles, action, and the turmoil. The characters are interesting, funny, and sad. I can't say I didn't love one of them in some way. Overall, I would re-read this again just to pick up on little things I likely missed due to the speed at which I devoured this book.

Alluring costume design and stunning architecture heighten story aesthetics. Enigmatic equations and expertly engineered gadgets add technical appeal. Kitchen concoctions, a performer’s perfumes, and chemical explosions intensify olfactory experiences. Meanwhile, allusions to mythology and religion intensify the depth of the story.

Roshani Chokshi’s writing acumen is astounding. She crafts polished prose, ignites multi-sensory imagery, and delivers dialogue that is deliciously dry, undeniably funny, and always true to character. “The Gilded Wolves” is truly a “14 carat” contribution to the fantasy canon. I am don't typically read historical fantasies but I am so glad I did. I should have known Roshani Chokshi would write a masterpiece that left me wanting more. I LOVED everything about this book! The characters were amazing and really developed. If you are looking to delve into historical Paris be prepared to be swept off your feet with this magical read.

A lush, decadent, adventure story! Oh, Roshani Chokshi, how I want to live completely in your world! This is a story that I didn’t know I needed. 20th century France, magic, adventure, heist. The first in a series that I will be anxiously waiting to devour.

The Gilded Wolves will leave you breathless. Roshani's exquisite descriptions of the late 1800's reimagined with a modern twist set the tone for this fantasy quest. There were once four leading houses, but circumstances have now left only two in power. Severin, the lead character, hopes to change that. All he needs to do is find a way to secure his right as the heir to one of the leading houses with the help of his friends, an unexpected alliance, and the magic of forging. The journey is told from the alternating viewpoints of each team member and speeds toward an unexpected conclusion that will leave you wanting so much more.

The Gilded Wolves was a lush and sumptuous masterpiece, perfect for fans of Six of Crows, A Darker Shade of Magic, and A Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue. Roshani Chokshi could probably write a grocery list and I would read it.
