Description
In 1991 Los Angeles, Avi Arutiyan cleans out an old house that he inherited. He comes across a correspondence between his late grandfather Aram and David Levy, an Auschwitz survivor. As Avi uses the letters to unravel the hidden mysteries of his family, the journey connects him to Levy's descendants that are searching for their own answers. From the Anatolian desert in 1915 to the killing fields of Russia in 1942, from the Eichmann's trial in 1961 and the Auschwitz trial in Frankfurt in 1963-65 to the war-torn Lebanon of the 1970's, multiple threads must be untangled in order to unearth the long-buried secrets of revenge and search for justice.

A Note From the Publisher
In a way, this story was born out of my desire to get into the mind of Adolf Eichmann, to understand how people like him become possible. I chose the 1960's for the primary setting because, after Nuremberg, the Holocaust had been largely pushed out of public consciousness by the Cold War. It was only after the Eichmann trial that the world looked back into the heart of darkness. Also, I had opted to treat the Holocaust not as a standalone event but as the ugliest manifestation of the same human condition that drove the Armenian Genocide, the Cambodian killing fields, etc. I believe that we must look beyond the Holocaust in order to understand how ordinary people can turn into willing executioners.

Advance Praise
"Bell masterfully combines his mystery story with an unflinching look at the 20th century's bleakest tragedies. A beautiful . . . challengingly complex tale of the ramifications of history." -- Kirkus Reviews
"Eleos offers no easy answers, no pat approaches. Perhaps this is the novel's greatest challenge to its readers, as well as its finest attribute. D. R. Bell crafts a set of circumstances that involve the protagonist in a sifting of blame, historical examination, and family attitudes, drawing in readers with a scenario that at first seems relatively black and white; then immersing them in decisions and outcomes that are satisfyingly complex. ... Holocausts can happen again, but as long as stories such as Eleos capture the progression of events with an eye to explaining how logic and action led to disaster, future generations at least have a road map to avoid the pitfalls that lead in these directions." -- Diane Donovan, Donovan's Literary Services; Editor, California Bookwatch
