Description

"If Mooncakes were a spell, it would be a housewarming charm that settles with care into the softest parts of a home and makes the houseplants grow. I wish I could live inside this book.”  — New York Times bestselling author Casey McQuiston

A story of love and demons, family and witchcraft. Nova Huang knows more about magic than your average teen witch. She works at her grandmothers’ bookshop, where she helps them loan out spell books and investigate any supernatural occurrences in their New England town. One fateful night, she follows reports of a white wolf into the woods, and she comes across the unexpected: her childhood crush, Tam Lang, battling a horse demon in the woods. As a werewolf, Tam has been wandering from place to place for years, unable to call any townhome. Pursued by dark forces eager to claim the magic of wolves and out of options, Tam turns to Nova for help. Their latent feelings are rekindled against the backdrop of witchcraft, untested magic, occult rituals, and family ties both new and old in this enchanting tale of self-discovery.

I loved this. It was sweet and queer. It had witches and werewolves and a "save the town" mission. It had same sex relationships and awesome use of they/them/they're pronouns. It spoke to the strength of family and friend relationships. This was just overall well rounded and plain fun. I think I have a lot of teen readers who are going to be super interested in this fall in New England tale when it drops in October.

This was so precious and everything i wanted in a graphic novel!

The overall tone was atmospheric and made me beyond excited for the upcoming fall months in New England. The subject matter was also right up my alley and the magic system was very similar to that of the Harry Potter series which I really enjoyed. Oh and the romance was ADORABLE.

I can't wait to get my hands on a final copy in October to see the finalized artwork! Also crossing my fingers that we'll get a sequel in the future since it finished on an open-ended note.

This was such a fun book with great characters, really nice magic, and warmth.
I loved the writing, the story and the illustrations. If you want to have a good time, go for it. It's amazing!
Thanks a lot Netgalley and the publisher for this copy in exchange for an honest review.

I never knew how much I needed this precious graphic novel about a queer hard-of-hearing witch and a nonbinary werewolf (both Chinese-American) childhood-friends-to-lovers relationship, but WOW, here we are and this is going to be one of my favorite releases of the year, no doubt at all.

Because I'm having a hard time putting into normal review formatting how much I loved this, let the bullets do their thing:

• DIVERSITY FOR DAAAAYYYYYS
• Not only are both MCs Chinese-American and queer, but Nova has two grandmas in a relationship with each other, too?! KILLING ME WITH CUTENESS, Y’ALL
• Such sweet and wholesome witchy rep, please give me more stories about good witches interacting with nature and doing sweet protective craft ♥
• This art is adorable, full stop, and can we just take a moment to appreciate the precious quiet detail of Tam’s ears?!
• Tam uses they/them pronouns (and even corrects other characters) and the other characters are so respectful of them!
• Multiple references to Nova’s hearing aids ♥
• Nova’s bestie is the obligatory skeptic character who’s also a trip and ships Nova/Tam so hard, A++ wing-woman over here
• Everything is just so wholesome and precious and we stan 😭

I seriously can't recommend this highly enough and I hope everyone picks it up and obsesses over it when it releases this October! 😍🎃🔮

Thank you so much to the publisher for providing me with this ARC in exchange for an honest review!

LOOOOOVED. Everything I wanted and needed. The representation was so full and diverse in every single aspect. This was the first book I've ever actually read with a non-binary character so it was great to see from a perspective I never have before. This had all the witchy and fall vibes I could ever ask for in a graphic novel. I can't wait until it comes out in October so I can get my hands on a finished copy and see all the lovely illustrations in full color. I can't wait!!!

I definitely recommend getting your hands on this when it comes out!

This was an beautiful tale of witches, werewolves, queer love and the magic of friendship. The art is gorgeous, the plot is exciting and the characters are relatable. I'd been looking forward to reading it for a long time and I wasn't disappointed!

There were so many sweet and wholesome themes running throughout this graphic novel - of a romance rekindled, of family (no matter what form yours takes) and proof of a non-binary spectrum of race, gender and sexuality. Not to mention witchy bookstore magic, and the fierce desire to protect those you love.

The story was simple, but sweet, and beautifully told through the delightfully detailed illustrations. There's a cat in almost every panel (sometimes reacting to what Tam and Nova are doing) and the colours and details are really warming. It really reminded me of the old Gunnerkrigg Court webcomic I used to read.

I especially loved the two main characters; Nova and Tam. I loved the way they looked, clothes they wore and the way that they were depicted. I especially loved the cute rekindling of their (queer) relationship. And it was wonderful to see such diversity representation across all the characters, from size to gender, to queer relationships to disabilities. And there was wonderful acceptance when Tam asked for they/them pronouns.

All in all this gave me warm and fuzzy feelings, and a real joy for the love between all the characters.
