"A stunning thriller/fantasy/sci-fi chimera like nothing I've read before." — Blake Crouch
"A hugely imagined, twisty, turning tale that leads through the labyrinths of magic and war to the center of the heart." — Diana Gabaldon
The masterful first novel for adults from the mega-selling author of the Divergent franchise
Fifteen years ago, five ordinary teenagers were singled out by a prophecy to take down an impossibly powerful entity wreaking havoc across North America. He was known as the Dark One, and his weapon of choice—catastrophic events known as Drains—leveled cities and claimed thousands of lives. Chosen Ones, as the teens were known, gave everything they had to defeat him.
After the Dark One fell, the world went back to normal . . . for everyone but them. After all, what do you do when you’re the most famous people on Earth, your only education was in magical destruction, and your purpose in life is now fulfilled?
Of the five, Sloane has had the hardest time adjusting. Everyone else blames the PTSD—and her huge attitude problem—but really, she’s hiding secrets from them . . . secrets that keep her tied to the past and alienate her from the only four people in the world who understand her.
On the tenth anniversary of the Dark One’s defeat, something unthinkable happens: one of the Chosen Ones dies. When the others gather for the funeral, they discover the Dark One’s ultimate goal was much bigger than they, the government, or even prophecy could have foretold—bigger than the world itself.
And this time, fighting back might take more than Sloane has to give.
A Note From the Publisher

"Chosen Ones by Veronica Roth is the cure for all those humdrum 'one true savior' narratives. This dark, complex novel rocked my heart and left me with a renewed sense that saving the world is a job that never ends. Roth's version of magic is as flawed and fascinating as her characters, and her story keeps you guessing until the wild conclusion. You'll never look at fantasy heroes the same way again." —Charlie Jane Anders, Hugo & Nebula Award winning author of The City in the Middle of the Night
“With Chosen Ones, Veronica Roth has pulled off a virtuoso performance, conjuring a stunning thriller/fantasy/sci-fi chimera like nothing I’ve read before, a story of ex-heroes struggling with the trauma of their past, what it means to have once saved the world, and the dark side of destiny.” —Blake Crouch, New York Times bestselling author of Recursion
"Roth somehow manages to make universe-building look easy. She sets it all up--world, characters, premise--so smoothly that you hardly notice until you're a hundred pages in and hurtling down the tracks. An insightful exploration of desire and ambition that also touches on broader societal topics, including celebrity, social media, trauma and recovery. A thought-provoking novel with ample emotion and a sense of playfulness with form. And one more thing: when the inevitable adaptation of Chosen Ones hits the screen someday, I just hope it captures Roth's fascinating and original theory of magic." —Charles Yu, author of Interior Chinatown

My mind is blown. I finished reading this book and all I could think was "What could possibly come next?". Everything about this book is different, the way it is told, the worldbuilding, the characters are not at all what you would expect. I LOVED IT! It had me excited from the get go because the story does not start at the beginning, it starts in the aftermath when things are settling down and returning to normal. It makes the reader think about things like PTSD and trauma, and how we cope with events we weren't sure we would survive. I've read many books with so-called chosen ones, I've never felt for one as much as I have Sloane. This is a new book that takes a second look at the experience of a chosen one, and it is WONDERFULLY captivating.
Veronica Roth proves to be much more than a dystopian young adult author with a short string of successes. I loved Roth’s follow-up work to the Divergent series, including her collection of short fiction.
Now, we have Chosen Ones, the author’s first title for an adult audience. I loved the detail, thoughtfulness, and creativity that Roth brought to a new fictional universe.
Chosen Ones is enjoyable and is hopefully a taste of more to come.
Such a unique and exciting story. It captivated me from the first page. This unique tale has quickly become one of my new favorites.. Veronica Roth has created something that stands outside of all genres. It is a well-written, masterfully thought-out combination of sci-fi, fantasy, and many others. You can see the influence of many great authors on Roth as a fellow book reader. However, she has proven without a doubt that her creative abilities are all her own as she produces works that establish her as an excellent storyteller among the greats.
Thanks Netgalley for the digital copy in exchange for an honest review.
I loved this book! Fans of the "chosen one" trope in YA and MG novels will love this adult version! What happens when Chosen Ones grow up? They are trained as children to fight but not told how to live as normal post-war adults. Loved the premise. Loved the story. Loved the writing. You can really see and feel how Veronica Roth has grown up as a writer since the Divergent series.
Definitely will recommend all my adult-aged YA readers to add to their TBR list.
An interesting look at how the children who are the "chosen one" cope with life after having been used as a weapon. How do you hold yourself together when you have literally seen the worst that humanity has to offer? What happens when you aren't a likeable person after all that trauma? What happens when you have to do it all over again?
Well written, quickly paced, and enjoyable.
When a Voldemort-like "Dark One" wreaks havoc and destruction on the earth, 5 prophesied "Chosen Ones" are found to defeat him. Intriguingly, this story takes place AFTER those events, when the 5 are recognized by essentially every human alive, and some of them damaged in ways even they aren't fully aware of. Living with the memory of torture and horror combined with the bizarre level of public scrutiny as well as their superhuman powers does not make for a healthy mix, but fascinating storytelling. And then the bottom falls out of their world when one of them dies, and their reality suddenly alternates into one where the Dark One is still having a grand old time and ready for a rematch. And the now four are damaged and broken and most definitely not. Psychologically rich and intense, with a fast moving plot and gritty characters. Highly recommended.
Chosen Ones is a fast-paced novel filled with suspense, action, and a thought-provoking plot. Imagine superheroes that save the world and fifteen years later, our story begins. Some have PTSD. There are secrets. And the story goes unexpected places. With plenty of twists and turns, Veronica Roth keeps readers on the edge of their seats. An outstanding first go at adult fiction after bringing the world the thrilling Divergent series. Highly recommended to readers looking for something original in adult fiction or if you enjoyed Veronica Roth's YA series.
