Description

Have you longed for the days when as a child, you walked into your Grandma’s kitchen and enjoyed one of her home-baked pies, cakes, or cookies? Can you taste them?

*Just close your eyes and imagine…. *

Your Grandma spent much time in the kitchen, baking sweets and treats for her family—all from scratch—and all from the heart.

The only difference was that Grandma had more time than we do—and she sure didn’t use Cool Whip (if she baked like her Grandma did)—and neither do we!

An “anthology” is a collection and we hope that we’ve brought to you a smattering of Grandma’s best desserts (along with newer varieties) from the "classics", along with some exotic desserts thrown in—spiced with helpful and beneficial tips to make these culinary delights all the more enticing.

We selected only those dessert recipes that use natural ingredients. We also noted in our research that many so-called “30-minute desserts” were created using store-bought items like ladyfingers, which were then covered with canned fruit and chocolate and the ultimate—Cool-Whip and *Voila!* Dessert in less than 30 minutes! While this may be fine for some, this is not CakeChatter’s idea of a made-from-scratch dessert.

Our desserts are fast and are made-from-scratch (and we mean from scratch!) in 30 minutes (some a few minutes more, so forgive us). We also edited “the way” to put a recipe together, making the directions much simpler and easier to follow, so that your desserts will “sing” your praises when devoured.

Enjoy the baking and the reward! *Grandma would be proud!*

Thirty, 30-Minute Made-From-Scratch Desserts earns 5/5 Whisks...Delicious Treats!

I love desserts, and fondly remember my grandmother’s huckleberry pie, chocolate cake, and peach cupcakes. More importantly, I remember helping by rolling, mixing, and scooping. As an adult, outside of my hippie phase where everything was from scratch, I moved on to box mixes, frozen dough, canned fillings, and “just pick it up at the bakery.” However, with a need to find things to occupy my “stay at home” time, I thought channelling my “Grandma Faye” was a great idea and CakeChatter folks with DoughPunchers gave me thirty opportunities to make desserts from scratch in 30-minutes. Here goes...

The thirty recipes are varied from traditional cakes, pies, cookies and brownies to a more fancy dessert like cannoli, mousse, gratin and crepe millefeuille offering something for everyone and every occasion. Each recipe begins with a nice photo to which one’s efforts can be compared, then Prep and Cooking time well close to the 30-minute goal, a “Note” of interest, full ingredient list, easy “How-To-Do-It” directions, and often “To Serve” ideas and Nutritional Facts. There is a Metric Conversion Chart, links about the author/team who created the recipes, and often a cute meme. The eBook version has several links to other resources, and easy to navigate the recipes using the “Contents.” It’s definitely a complete and fun cookbook even a novice should have, but alternatives for lactose issue or suggestions for substitutions would have been a nice addition. Now, which dessert...traditional or a little more fancy?

Traditional: Boozy Rumchata Brownies. It was easy, and with the option to use any cream liqueur, I exchanged the Rumchata for Kahlua, my favorite, and served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. “Feeling downie...eat a brownie.”

Fancy: French Berry Gratin with Elderflower (liqueur). This recipe just said “berries, preferably organic,” and blackberries were plentiful at the market. It was an issue trying to find elderflower cordial, especially since I’d probably not use it often, and there were no substitutions. It was only 2 Tbsps...Do I try the recipe without it? I decided to use Chambord Raspberry Liqueur. It was surprisingly good. It was suggested to serve warm, but I liked it a bit chilled. Not quite a brûlée, but close. “A Berry Bite of Happiness.”

I also tried the “Orange Pudding,” light, refreshing flavor (I had to really work at the tempering the egg yolks). Second time worked; “Strawberry Lemon Shortcakes,” is nice for tea time (Room to be creative: Blackberry Lemon?); and for a nice chocolate fix? “Swedish Chocolate Cake (Kladdkaka)! Twenty-five more to enjoy!

An Anthology of Thirty, 30 Minute Made-From-Scratch Desserts is a short e-cookbook by the editors of CakeChatter. Released 12th May 2020, it's 137 pages and available in ebook format. It's worth noting that the ebook format has a handy interactive table of contents as well as interactive links and references throughout. I've really become enamored of ebooks with interactive formats lately. For Kindle Unlimited subscribers, this book is included in the KU subscription library to borrow and read for free. As far as I can see, the recipes are well curated from the content included on the blog, sparing the reader from having to hunt for them.

The recipes have their ingredients listed bullet style in a sidebar. Measurements are given in US standard only. Special tools and ingredients are also listed, along with yields and cooking directions. Most of the ingredients are easily sourced at any moderately well stocked grocery store. Nutritional information is included in the footer at the end of the recipes and includes calories, fat, sodium, carbs, protein, sodium, potassium, fibre, sugar, vitamin content and micro-nutrients.Tips and variations on each recipe are included in after the step by step directions. There are small color photos for each recipe.

The book also includes a short metric conversion chart, but lacks any index or general ingredients index.

Four stars. This would make a superlative selection for busy cooks, and is apparently the start of a series (next volume is yeast rolls and biscuits).

Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.

One word for this cookbook: Quirky! It's like finding recipes on a blog, very casual/informal language, followed by suggestions from people who made the recipe from a post online. Supposedly these each take only 30 minutes, though I'm a bit skeptical in a few cases. Some of the recipes are traditional comfort food, such as Coca Cola Cake or Key Lime Pie, while others are a bit more unique (e.g., Ricotta-Mascarpone Mousse with Balsamic Strawberries or Peach Napoleon with Sugared Wonton Wrappers). Cute little "posters" are scattered throughout to add a bit of humor related to that recipe. One unusual thing: there's a metric conversion chart tucked in the middle of all the recipes--not sure if this is intentional or misplaced. And, the best thing? There is a photo of every single dessert! I love this and do not find it very often in a cookbook.

Absolutely absorbed this book. I bookmarked at least 20 recipes I want to make and try. I love that there is an image with each recipe, the simplicity of the instructions and the overall layout. I look forward to reading and using future publications along these same lines. Really enjoyed this title and cannot wait to bake.

If you have avoided baking from scratch because it took too long, or if you bake often but are looking for quick from scratch desserts, this little cookbook is perfect. The recipes come from many different sources and include old favorites such as macaroons, plus new desserts,an unbeluievably simple chocolate mousse, that are sure to become standards.

A charming feature is hat these reciopes are "crowd-tested" and comments, including great variations, arei included. Therre are even keto anf vegan recipes for those on special diets.

You'll turn to this book again anf again.

This delightful anthology is packed with delicious recipes from such varied sources as Better Homes and Gardens, Taste of Home and carribeangreenliving.com. The recipes are easy to make from scratch, even for an elementary baker like me, and each recipe comes with a photo, which I appreciate. Add in the helpful hints and great cooking quotes sprinkled throughout the book, and you have a cookbook that’s a definite keeper. My personal favorite quote, “I bake because punching people is frowned upon.” The French Toasted Angel Food Cake and No-Bake Lemon Cream Pie are definite winners, as are the Brown Butter Espresso Toffee Brownies and the Coca-Cola Cake, and…well, you get the picture.

This is the first entry in the Dough Puncher’s e-book series. And I can’t wait to see what else they have in store.

I received a free e-copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for a fair and honest review.

This is a collection of recipes from various sources with notes and steps that break down the process into easy to follow recipes. I have one dessert I am very good at making and that is where my baking prowess ends. About half of these looked like something even I could handle, so I consider that doing the near-impossible with recipe writing. The rest of them also look delicious!

It's a fun book with easy to make recipes that takes about 30 min. I don't get the grandma part though but the book itself is very useful! I love desert but I'm lazy to make it so I could use these recipes. There are some funny memes after each recipes and makes it more like a millennium cookbook than a grandma cookbook. Every single recipe has a photo! The recipes in this book are from different authors and there's a website before each recipe telling you were they got it from. So it's like a book with all the recipes you have saved in a folder in your computer! I received a free digital copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review

Thank you NetGalley, Editors of CakeChatter and Tara House Publications for the ARC of An Anthology of Thirty 30Minute Made From Scratch Desserts Desserts just like Grandma used to make. In exchange this is my personal honest opinion.
I was not sure what to expect when I opened this book – I was thinking it would be redo recipes of Grandmothers recipes. I was absolutely thrilled with what I was reading.

I really liked the directions given for the recipes that would make the process of making them quick and easy.
I know that some of the recipes will for sure be made over and over again for my family.
This is a cookbook I will tell my friends and family they have to buy.

To start this cover reflects the book. The cover is nostalgic and yet simple. The recipes included are like those of bygone days and or ones that have come back slowly. These recipes are easy to understand and having the pictures to see a representation for them helps to see what the finished project should look like. This book will definitely be recommended as an easy getting started into the world of cooking.

OMG! I think I gained 10 pounds just reading this delicious, lovely, fun cookbook! Even though I’m hypoglycemic, there are a few recipes in here I can definitely try and I know the grandkids will like those peanut butter cornflake cookies. I also enjoyed the quotes about baking and cooking interspersed between the recipes. Job well done!

Thanks to NetGalley, the author and publisher for an advanced reading copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

I've been adding to my cookbook collection for almost 50 years and have not seen any books as uniquely entertaining as well as educational. My Grandma was the cook in our family, my Mother didn't cook much. So when I wanted to learn, it was to Grandma's house I went! These recipes are definitely authentic home style cooking that I did indeed learn from my Grandma. The book is a great resource but it's also a very entertaining read. Don't just thumb through the index, sit down and read as you choose which recipe to make first. I think you'll find many that will take you back to a time when there were no microwaves.

Really nice collection of dessert recipes. Many of them I remember my grandmother making!
Has comments from people that tried the recipes as well as photos. Though you can probably find these recipes in other places, you would have to know the name of the one you were looking for...and this book has so many in one place, it just makes sense to get this book.
Highly recommend.

The recipes in this ebook are amazing. I have saved some recipes to try in the future. Some of the formatting was really funky and there were a couple that could not be read at all due to the formatting. This being said I read the cookbook on a PC and not a phone or a table so am not sure how the formatting would be on other devices. I was gifted this ebook through NetGalley.

A rich history of American cookbooks, and the contribution of African Americans. The first American cookbooks were written by white Americans using African American recipes. The Cookbooks originated in the South, and the slaves cooked for the whites. The contributions that African Americans made to the cookbooks weren't acknowledged. The book follows history of cookbooks in America from the beginning to the present. I really enjoyed reading this book. I never realized or thought about that authors/contributors. I collect antique cookbooks, and this has me appreciating them in a whole new light. I really appreciated the details describing the different contributions and how some things came to be. I think anyone who enjoys cookbooks and/or history will enjoy this book.

This book delivers on exactly what the title says it is. Grandma recipes from scratch that don't take all day to make. These are the desserts you will be asked to make and bring to parties or church gatherings.

This book is worth it for the mug chocolate cake for 2 recipe alone! But it also has a really good strawberry cheesecake that is delicious and a few cookie recipes I'm definitely going to make.

There are some healthier desserts too - a paleo one, pumpkin cannoli, and sweet potato oat bars.

You get everything you would expect - a nice photo, a recipe, and nutritional info. You also get reviews of the recipe which include tips for how people have changed things up. I think this was really clever to include as it's similar to a recipe site online where you can read customer reviews and adjustments. They also include a meme, cartoon, or quote after each recipe.

***I do want to say there is one meme that I thought was in poor taste
