Description

Why does the moon look so round? So full? So… egg-like?

Olive Owlsly is a curious, dreamy little owl with big thoughts and even bigger questions, especially about the night sky.

One windy night in California's Anza-Borrego Desert, Olive stares up at the glowing sky and wonders if the moon isn't just full, but egg-shaped, and maybe even ready to hatch.

Armed with her Emergency Adventure Kit (string, goggles, and a single cracker), Olive sets off to learn more. With gentle guidance from her favorite teacher, Ms. Quiverleaf, she discovers that imagination, wonder, and quiet courage can make even the stillest nights feel magical.

Set beneath the stars and desert winds, Olive Owlsly & The Moon-Egg Mystery is a cozy, heartwarming bedtime story. It supports social-emotional learning (SEL) through themes of curiosity, creative thinking, and emotional self-trust.

Perfect for:

  • Kids ages 4 to 8
  • Dreamy readers who love animals, stars, and big "what ifs"
  • Parents, educators, and therapists looking for gentle stories that explore big feelings
  • Families seeking a thoughtful, funny, and imaginative bedtime read

Great book to encourage children to use their imaginations. It reminded me of something Mr. Rogers would read on his show. And I mean that as a huge compliment. Very sweet and cozy illustrations.

A lovely story about imagination, and perfect for bedtime reading. We loved imagining what could be in the Moon-Egg (myself and four year old), and we both loved the illustrations. A great book to start conversations about imagination, and for those of us that don’t live near a desert, what it is and all the plants and animals that live in them!

I delightful debut! This reminded me of The Golden Egg Book, which is a classic, but also my favorite kids book ever. I loved the illustration of the imaginary dragon and the idea of an emergency adventure kit. I particularly liked the way the text was divided into it's own area on the page which made it so much easier to read than a lot of kids books that often put the text over the top of a colored background. My son's favorite animal is the owl so I am always on the lookout for an owl-themed book.

This book was so heart-warming! When I was a young girl, the house I grew up in was near the railroad tracks. I'd often hear the train whistle during quiet early mornings and let my imagination run wild. This book brought me right back to those moments of childhood wonder. Children may not know everything but what they do notice is the beauty waiting to be observed.

The illustrations in this book were adorable! The colors added a "mystical" vibe to the story, and I loved that!

This is wonderful story that encourages children to use their imaginations. I loved how the teacher listened and shared in the youngster's ideas and fantasy. The illustrations are darling and showcased the story well. Highly recommend sharing this story at bedtime and story hour.

What an enjoyable story!

Beautiful illustrations matching the sweet story of a little adventurous owl with an active imagination. This is just what I want from picture books and am happy to see an author embrace the simplicity when I read lots of current picture books that are trying to do too much and it never works out.

SPOILER ALERT
This story might have hit me a little too hard as the older owl is so kind to the imaginative youngster and engages in the adventure asking if the moon is a dragon egg, what kind of dragon will be born? I appreciated this answer and calmness on a much deeper level than expected and wish that the adults in my childhood were as kind and gracious to foster my imagination instead of answering my question about mermaids with "They're not real." When the moon doesn't hatch a dragon in the night the young owl admits that she might be wrong, but the older owl is kind again replying that it might only be for imaginative little owls to see the dragon egg at night. Again- what an answer to foster imagination and encourage creativity!

10 out of 10 will read again!
