Description

New York Times bestseller Allison Brennan delivers a pulse-pounding thriller about one family fighting for their land against both human enemies and Mother Nature.

After the sudden death of her husband, Ellen McKenna is doing everything she can to keep her Texas farm afloat. She and her family hope to expand their operation, but times are tough and making ends meet is more expensive than she imagined, much less trying to grow. Many of their neighbors in Cooke County have thrown in the towel and agreed to sell their farms to a local businessman, but despite similar pressure, Ellen refuses to let her dreams die.

On top of the usual hardships, a series of recent storms has left the region partly flooded, and as the heavy rain begins again one morning, all the members of the McKenna family jump into action to protect their land and animals. Ellen’s oldest son discovers an injured dog—and the dog leads him to a man barely clinging to life, the apparent victim of a brutal home invasion. Then, Ellen’s younger kids go to check on a nearby neighbor and walk into a threat none of them saw coming.

Before anyone can figure out what’s really going on in their idyllic rural valley, the storm picks up again in intensity, and the McKenna kids find themselves in over their heads with no way to call for help. To protect her farm--and her family—Ellen must face down all the forces trying to tear them apart.

Allison Brennan's talent for twisty, tense pacing combines with a deeply drawn family drama and the unforgiving power of nature in this compelling standalone thriller.

In Whisper Creek, Allison Brennan delivers a high-octane blend of suspense and small-town tension that keeps you looking over your shoulder. The story excels at building a sense of creeping dread, as a picturesque setting becomes the backdrop for a complex investigation where no one is exactly who they seem. Brennan’s hallmark is her ability to craft tough, capable characters who are forced to confront their own vulnerabilities while racing against a ticking clock. The pacing is relentless, but she still finds the heart in the story, grounding the action in real emotional stakes and the deep-seated secrets that can haunt a community for generations. It’s a gripping, "edge-of-your-seat" read that satisfies both the craving for a solid mystery and the need for a story with true grit.

This standalone thriller from Allison Brennan belongs on everyone's TBR pile.

When monster storms threaten land already water logged land, Ellen and her kids find themselves facing threats -- human and storm-related -- that will tests them to their limits.

Brennan has created a compelling thriller, complete with twists and surprises. She has also created a warm, compelling story of family fighting to hold on to each other, and to the land they love. Highly recommended. #WhisperCreek #NetGslley #SaltMarshAuthorSeries

Thank you NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for an ARC of this novel. Allison Brennan knocked this one out of the park and I know I will be thinking about this book for a long time. We are following the members of the McKenna family as they navigate preparing their Texas farm for a wild storm, but the storm isn't the only problem they will face. I was hooked from the start. This book is full of action and I thought the pacing was perfect for a story that is primarily centered around one day. There were several expertly place flashbacks to provide context but it wasn't overdone or feel like filler. Highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a fast paced thriller or an atmospheric rural escape.

I just finished reading Whisper Creek and I feel like I went through the storm with the characters! As the storm worsens, so does the tension and the conflict. And everyone has their own battle. Which means I was jumping from situation to situation. It was like watching a scary movie where you're yelling at the characters to warn them what's around the corner. I was relieved to get to the end and satisfied with the outcome. I highly recommend this book.

I used to read Allison Brennan all the time. After reading Whisper Creek, I have to question why the heck I ever stopped? This was an excellent action tale. And edge-of-your-seat tale. And family tale. Yes, it all blended together quite nicely! Ellen McKenna's husband has died, and she is hoping to expand her family's Texas farm in order to keep it going. Everyone around her is selling off to developers, but she is determined. But first, there is a massive storm headed their way to contend with. As she and the kids try to prepare and secure everything, the kids stumble upon a dog and a home invasion victim. This leads to something else and soon the kids are in way over their heads, cut off from contact and separated from Ellen, who is still back at the farm. Oh, and Ellen now has more than just the storm to contend with! The author did a knock-out job of juggling all of this and still keeping the tension and action going. We also have the fierce family love that holds it all together. The atmosphere is really well written, especially as I am not too far from Cooke County, Texas where this story takes place. And I too, am quite familiar with these Texas storms. For what started as a just-finished-another-book-and-I'm-not-sure-I-want-to-start-this-one sort of read, I am so glad I read this unexpected gem! And I am back on the Allison Brennan train!

Thank you to Allison Brennan, #NetGalley and St. Martin's Press | Minotaur Books for this ARC. All opinions are my own.

I will post my review to Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Facebook and other retail and social media sites upon publication day of June 23, 2026.

What an amazing story! It was intriguing with lots of tension and danger from humans as well as the Incredibly well described rain and wind damage and the potential loss of life because of the dangerous situations the characters faced. The pacing of the book was perfect. The scene where Ellen attempts to save the life of one of the vigilantes sabotaging her farm was so well written and carried out. Once I had read about 1/3 of this book there wasn’t much that could drag me away from it. I couldn’t wait to find out what happens and if the guilty parties pay with prison time. Thank you Allison Brennan for such a good book! I received a copy of this book I am leaving this review voluntarily.
