Caitlin, Mallory, Rachel, Kendra, Sonali and Lourdes were good friends who used to hang out together. One night they went out to dinner together and Caitlin and Mallory excused themselves to go to the restroom. There was clearly something wrong with Caitlin and Mallory asked her what it was, She knew that Caitlin's mom had recently passed away and when she asked her about it Caitlin didn't respond. Instead, she took a lipstick out of her purse and it fell to the ground. She asked Mallory to hold it for her because there was something wrong with the latch on her purse. And then Caitlin left the restaurant without telling anyone she was leaving.

When Mallory got home she took the lipstick out of her purse and realized it wasn't really a lipstick. Instead it was an electronic key. She had no idea what was on it and she didn't know why Caitlin had given it to her. She went to bed that night and woke up to the sound of someone breaking into her apartment. She was able to close the door and push a dresser in front of it. She heard heard the intruder past her bedroom and go into the bathroom. And then the person left. Not long thereafter, there was a huge earthquake. This was in San Francisco.

Mallory tried to phone Caitlin but got no answer. And then she phoned her other friends and no one had seen or heard from Caitlin. So she called the police and filed a missing person. It seemed the police weren't too concerned, but because she kept calling they told her about a body they had found. When Mallory went to see the body she identified it as being Caitlin. It was clear that she had been hit hard upside the head. The body had been found at the presidio, which was an older part of San Francisco and was falling down. Mallory couldn't for the life of her figure out what Caitlin was doing there. But the one thing she knew was that Caitlin had been murdered. She also suspected that her mother had been murdered.

Caitlin had a horrible relationship with her stepfather because he was a wretched man and have been cheating on her mother. Mallory was talking to Kendra and decided she was going to go to Caitlin's house to talk to her stepfather.. At that point she thought maybe he killed her. Kendra decided to go with her. They found him in the sunroom on a chair, dead. He still had the gun in his hand.

None of her friends seemed to be that concerned about the fact that Caitlin was dead and Mallory couldn't get them to care. When she asked them questions about her, they all had flippant answers, so Mallory thought one of them had killed her. She decided to do her own investigating. When she talked to Sonali she found out that she had an alibi. She went through all of her friends and she had it narrowed down to two. And then when she went out for drinks with those two they decided to go to go to a new nightclub that was nearby. Mallory got lost in the club and found herself upstairs. And then someone pushed her out a window and she knew it was one of those too, if not both of them.

After the earthquake, Mallory had left town to go and stay with one of her aunts and she wanted to clear her head. Her neighbor across the street, Harry, told her that someone had broken into her apartment again. He had doorbell video but the person didn't come across clear.

Oh my goodness! This was such a good book. It wasn't evident who the killer was which made the book that much better. I couldn't find any flaws that the author committed. I must say I was impressed. I gave it five stars.
