Description

1981. Historical home renovator Lori Greene can’t believe her luck when she inherits Haite Hill, a seemingly abandoned Victorian Gothic tucked deep in the Cuyahoga Valley. Like the mysterious manor on the hill, the forgotten company town below it has its own fair share of secrets, and as Lori and her daughters begin to experience nightmares and other strange occurrences, she quickly realizes its history is more brutal than she ever could have imagined.

1910. Recently betrothed Ada Haite is sent to her nefarious husband’s summer home under the pretense of her mental health. But he has also abandoned both his daughters from other marriages there with her, and as horrible night terrors threaten their lives, Ada soon discovers the house’s grisly intent.

Two stories, each at a different point in time, weave together as the women grapple with their ideas of motherhood while being confronted with things both sinister and ancient, as Haite Towne and its house on the hill reveal the story of a place built on women’s agony.

The Agony of Her is one of those books that sinks its claws into you quietly—and then refuses to let go. Cassandra L. Thompson delivers an emotionally raw, beautifully written story that explores grief, identity, and the quiet devastation of loving deeply and losing pieces of yourself along the way.
The prose is haunting without being overwrought, and the emotional weight feels earned rather than forced. Thompson has a gift for capturing internal pain—the kind that isn’t loud or dramatic, but heavy, persistent, and achingly real. The characters feel painfully human, flawed in ways that make them relatable rather than frustrating, and their emotional journeys linger long after the final page.
What stood out most was how intimate the storytelling felt. The author doesn’t rush the hurt or gloss over it; instead, she lets the reader sit with it, feel it, and ultimately understand it. It’s not an easy read—but it’s a meaningful one.
If you love character-driven stories, emotional depth, and books that leave a mark on your heart, The Agony of Her is absolutely worth reading. A powerful, unforgettable novel that earns every one of its five stars.

I'm completely OBSESSED with this story!!!! When I tell you this book not only had me hooked but it had my mind reeling through out the night it was so good!
This book gives The Haunting (Hugh Crane) mixed with Coraline vibes in all the best of ways!
We get the story of Ada Haite the new and third wife of Charles Haite, as her and his two daughters from two previous marriages get sent to Haite Hill. Charles owned the mill and as such the town was named Haite Town. Ada suffered from sleepwalking and Charles solution was to hid her away in a summer home that was built for his first wife Julianna. As the story goes along Ada starts experiencing strange things both during waking hours and at night.
We go back and forth between timelines (1910 & 1981) to get the full story.
We also meet Lori Green whom inherits Haite Hill, an abandoned Victorian Gothic set in the long forgotten company town deep in the Cuyahoga valley. Lori happens to be a historical home renovator. This unexpected inheritance comes during a time when she needs it the most. Lori has recently been divorced and needed a fresh start. Lori same as Ada has two step daughters whom unfortunately have an absent father by his choosing. We finally have a story that paints a stepmother in a good light and not as the villain.
