I love this company and was so excited to read their book! It does not disappoint! Beautiful photos throughout and great information. I want to try everything!
So informative! I loved that the first part of the book is all about the ingredients and how to use them properly. All the recipes are quite easy to make (though some ingredients may be harder to source locally) with easy instructions. The pictures throughout the book are very lovely.
I found this book to be super informative, especially if you want to start making natural and organic products for yourself.
At the beginning it has a chapter dedicated to the "foundational knowledge" and it really does have everything you meed to know before starting, tools and supplies, types of bases for your products and how you can substitute them, how to preserve the products and even conversion tables.
After that, each chapter is dedicated to a category of products: for face, lips, hair and so on, which make everything easy to find.
Another part I loved about this book is the tips: it gives tips about how you can DIY some of the ingredients, what to modify in case you have a different type of hair or skin, how often you should use the product, what to change if you don't like the smell of some oil and many others
I am a newbie when it comes to natural body care but I have been wanting to dabble for some time! I have been wanting to cut back my waste and plastic use and thats what got me initially interested. Though after being enlightened to the ingredients in mass market products and the effects they can have on me and my daughter was the final straw.
I was looking for a beginner friendly book and finding this on Netgalley I took it as a sign to take the plunge.
This was so informative and I felt like it gave me enough knowledge to get started and not make unsafe mistakes. I enjoyed learning about common ingredients and their properties, and how to prepare them safely. There was so many things I didn't know like how some oils need an companion to work in products. The conversion chart was also a big take away from this and will be frequently referring to it.
The recipes were easy to follow and performed in my opinion great. I am looking forward to trying out the after sun spray this summer! I cannot wait to pick up a physical book to have on hand.
The mountain rose herbs book of natural body care - Shawn Donnille
Great little book for making natural herbal remedies and bath and body essentials. With beautiful illustrations and well thought out ideas and detailed recipes there is definitely something for everyone even if you’re new to making your own herbal remedies.
I have sensitive skin and I’m a bit wary of trying out some of these on bare skin, but there are quite a few recipes I have written down from the book as I think I would benefit from them. There are a few tea recipes that I would love to try, can’t wait for those! ☕️ 🫖
The Mountain Rose Herbs Book of Natural Body Care is an encyclopedic herbal with recipes for a wide variety of uses and conditions collected and curated by Shawn Donille. Released 19th Dec 2023 by Hachette on their Timber Press imprint, it's 232 pages and available in hardcover and ebook formats.
The book begins with introductory chapters covering terms and concepts, including the foundational knowledge necessary for making and using the recipes included in the book safely and responsibly. The introductory chapters including the general instructions and introduction represent about 5% of the page content.
The following chapters are presented by self-care area: hair, face, lips, skin, hands & feet, shower & bath, and herbal remedies for simple ailments. Each of the chapters includes specific well written and photographed recipes. The ingredients are varied and specific. The book also includes a metric conversion table and a cross referenced index. The book is not overly photographed, but the photos which are included are well styled, clear, and in color.
It has a very practical/usable vibe. It will become a well used, personalized tome, with clippings and reipes, penciled notes in the margins, falling apart from long use - for those readers who fit within its niche focus. The writing is direct and accessible.
Five stars for those readers who really want to take control and cut out inorganic complex store-bought health and beauty items. It would also make a good choice for public/school library acquisition, for maker's groups, for the homesteader and self sufficiency reader, and for gifting or general reading.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.
Starts off with helpful context and information about supplies and ingredients. The recipes themselves seem pretty straightforward, although I haven't tried any yet. I appreciate the instructions for use that accompany some recipes. Really beautiful photographs and nice design as well.
This is a nice book with beautiful illustrations. I have always been fascinated with herbal medicine and this book has some useful herbal remedies for all sorts of ailments and beauty remedies. I'm hoping to try some of these out. Some of the ingredients I have in my kitchen and some are growing in my herb garden. There are some that I do not have but can be ordered from Mountain Rose Herbs and other herbal companies. Thanks for netgalley and the prublisher for providing me a digital copy of this book to read and review.

Thank you to Netgalley and Timber Press for the ARC!
I have long known Mountain Rose Herbs to be a wise presence in the herbal community. Founded by the godmother of herbalism, Rosemary Gladstar, Mountain Rose Herbs has a long standing and strong reputation for quality and deep knowledge of herbs and health.
The Mountain Rose Herbs Book of Natural Body Care is a testament to their knowledge. The recipes are varied and interesting. This is a collection that is just a little different than other similar books on the market. Various hair treatments, makeup remover, and homemade sheet face masks are just a few examples of additions that aren’t normally explored in similar books.
The book begins with a chapter on foundational knowledge. It’s written simply, yet is full of the information needed to be successful with this collection of recipes. The recipes are easy to follow but will be fully effective for their intended use. The photography is beautiful and displays the resulting product accurately.
The ingredients could be found locally, depending on your community. If not, Mountain Rose Herbs has a wonderful online store. Bonus: their website is full of even more information and ideas.
I’ll be adding The Mountain Rose Herbs Book of Natural Body Care to both my personal library and my public library shelves soon.
My sincere thanks to NetGalley, Timber Press, and Mountain Rose Herbs for a digital ARC of this book, in exchange for my honest review.
Natural body care is one of my fave things to learn about and use. This book has given me so many things to look through and think about. The modifications and safety tips were a HUGE selling point for me and I loved seeing them included!!
Impressive as expected.
Mountain Rose is a trusted company who takes time on quality herbs and herbal information. They are my go-to for supplies and herbs. Anyone interested in Natural ingredients will love this book. Very informative, with step by step for beginners and amazing recipes if you happen to be knowledgeable already.
Thank you Timber Press for providing an advanced copy via NetGalley.
A Must Have Book
Shawn Donnille discusses the basic knowledge in dealing with natural body care, along with some needed tools and supplies. He provides a list of some of the handiest receptacles needed, they are:
1. Bottles with dropper tops
2. Bottles with screw caps
3. Bottles with treatment pumps
4. Glass jars
5. Lip balm tubes
6. Roll-top glass bottles
7. Air-tight storage jars
He, also, discusses various herbs and essential oils for hair and skin. Two of the most important things the author discusses in this book are:
1. The Guide to Substituting Ingredients in Body Care Recipes
2. The Guide for Substituting Ingredients in Body Care Recipes
This is by far, one of the best books I've read dealing with natural body care. It is packed with lots of great information and recipes. Highly recommend.
Loved this book and love ordering my herbs from Mountain rose herbs! Lovely recipes and beautiful photos.
Thank you netgalley for an arc copy.
Thank you Timber Press and NetGalley for the advanced electronic review copy of this wonderful book. This book is a great compilation of recipes covering a wide range of needs. It’s geared toward a beginner with step-by-step instructions. A great gift for any DIY-er, I’ll be getting one for myself as well to keep these great suggestions and recipes close by.
Loved this book: well written, full of lovely project richly illustrated and easy to follow
Many thanks to the publisher for this ARC, all opinions are mine
This is an extremely clear, straightforward, and helpful guide to creating all sorts of natural body care items. This would be especially helpful if you were starting a small business or looking to make these items for yourself and/or your family. Recipes like dry shampoo are especially helpful in light of recent discoveries that the aerosolized options contain benzene.
The photography in this book is also stunning and makes it very easy to flip through and enjoy.
The Mountain Rose Herbs Book of Natural Body Care by Shawn Donille is a true gem of a book. There are tons of recipes for body and self care accompanied by beautiful photographs. The book is easy to follow as it takes you step by step. I have tried a few recipes for skincare, and they came out and worked beautifully. I highly recommend this book. I will be in line to purchase this book for myself, and as Christmas gifts for friends and family.
This is a great book for learning the basics of making your own skin care recipes and more. It really goes into detail in how to start, all about carrier oils, what various herbs do for your skin and hair, what you can substitute for what, etc. There are many recipes for things like hair rinses, body scrubs, cuticle oils, belly butters, bath bombs and much more. There are gorgeous color photos of every one, too.
I personally find that I really go back to incredibly simple recipes for my own beauty and body recipes (examples -- a simple paste of baking soda and water gently applied to breakouts and then rinsed is the single best acne treatment I've ever found, and I made a roll-on oil that regrew my thinning eyebrows with just rosemary essential oil in a castor oil carrier, used daily for a few months). These were a little too fiddly for me, even though they are far less fiddly than most books of this type. I do not necessarily need five ingredients and many steps. Sometimes just knowing the ways something like castor oil can solve a hundred problems is enough. I would have liked a few basic "recipes" like that, even though I know most books try to make more sophisticated recipes. Even though I have a house stocked with foraged and home grown herbs, basic ingredients like bentonite clay and carrier oils, essential oils, dried flowers, etc., there were virtually no recipes in the book where I wouldn't need to buy at least one ingredient or take the time to infuse something for a long time. I still loved the book, but I am a fan of also including a lot of really basic, wonderful remedies.
I read a temporary digital copy of this book for review.
