Thanks to NetGalley, Harper Collins UK, One More Chapter, and the author for the chance to read this book.
This historical novel set during WW2 is loosely based on true events that occurred during the Nazi occupation of Jersey in the Channel Islands. The story was intriguing and had me googling real-life events to get a better understanding of the location of the island and what happened to the inhabitants during the war.
The characters in this story show such strength and determination to support their friends and neighbours even when it has such dire risks for all involved. It was an enjoyable book that had me invested and left me in tears at the end.
A masterful blend of history and emotion, that captures the resilience and courage of ordinary people during war. Rich in historical detail, the story balances the harsh realities of war with moments of hope and humanity.
Many thanks to HarperCollins UK and to Netgalley for providing me with a galley in exchange for my honest opinion.
A great WW2 story set in Jersey where Helen finds herself trapped and unable to return to England when the Germans invade. Well written and researched it is a great story of the friendship and comradery that existed in times when people helped each other even if they risked their own lives by doing so
Neighbors at War is a refreshing outlook on the importance of community. We meet Helen who is a single mother trying to survive in Jersey during the Nazi invasion. She’s forced out of her home and into hiding. Throughout the story the theme of giving and kindness is evident with each act the characters do. This was written from multiple point of views and provided insight to the struggles many encounter during the war. I enjoyed reading this novel and the depth that each character had. It definitely had a surprise ending that really tied the story together. Thank you NetGalley and Deborah Carr for allowing me this read in exchange for an honest review.
In Deborah Carr’s second book about the Channel Islands during WWII, her main character, Helen Bowman, is trapped in Jersey. Helen fled to her aunt’s house after being shunned by her parents for being unwed and pregnant. Now, the Germans who occupy Jersey are rounding up all non-native residents for deportation to Germany. Helen must hide along with her son to try to survive. She is helped by kind neighbors and must rely on them for food, shelter, and security, but this puts the neighbors at risk too. Well written from various characters points of view.
A wonderful historical fiction set on the Channel Islands during WW11 .A story of what it was like living in Jersey under the German Occupation.Great characters ,a story of bravery and friendship.. Thank you to NetGalley for my ARC .

This was such an engaging story. We meet Helen, Peggy, and their families as they endure the Nazi Occupation of Jersey. There is so much fear and uncertainty, but also so much goodness and kindness in others.
I was on my seat, waiting to see what was going to happen to Helen and her son, Bobby. Carr does such an amazing job of making you feel that fear and uncertainty.
I have read a few other books set on the Channel Islands, and this was another good one to add to the list!
A gentle, heart-warming story set in occupied Jersey during World War Two. The main characters are kind to eachother, the little boy Bobby is a charming, well-behaved lad. The Nazis (renamed the Nasties by dear Bobby) are sufficiently alarming but not too cruel. The story is predictable which makes it quite a soothing, undemanding and cozy read despite the subject matter.
Thank you for the chance to read this ARC in return for my honest opinion.
It's not often that I read a book and it stays with me long after I have finished it and gone onto the next book.
But this one did.
I read a lot of historical fiction often set in WW2, and I had read the authors previous book but for some reason the inhumanity of the Nazis (or Nasties as Bobby called them) really got to me.
It tells of Helen who finds herself alone and pregnant, who goes to stay with an Aunt as her parents are unable to cope with her 'shame'.
Then she finds herself alone again on an Island where she shouldn't be as she wasn't Island born.
This is a tale of friendship, sabotage at times and in essence, hope. Hope for a better future and one without war.
Its beautifully written and well researched. One couldn't call it a pleasure to read - in some ways it's incredibly sad - but it kept me hooked till the end.
Well deserved of it's 5 stars - if I could it would've had more
Thank you
‘Neighbours at War’ by Deborah Carr is based on real peoples stories and experiences during the occupation of the Channel Islands. This is my third novel by Ms. Carr. She has written an another emotional story of what it was like living on Jersey during the Second World War during the German occupation.
The story takes place from 1941 to 1945. The story dives deeply into how the residents of Jersey survived until they were liberated. The story examines the hardships the residents faced and how they still came to the aid of their neighbors.
The main character Helen is shunned by her parents for being unmarried and pregnant. She travels to Jersey to stay with her Aunt Sylvia who welcomes her into her home with no judgment whatsoever. Helen goes through many trials and tribulations. Many are so heartbreaking you find yourself rooting for Helen. The Germans decide that all non-islanders are going to be deported to a concentration camp in Germany.
In addition to Helen and her Aunt, we are introduced to the family who lives next door. The risks this family takes to help their neighbors is beyond our imagination. The neighbor’s could also face deportation to a concentration camp for helping Helen. The scariest part of all is that the German officers took over Aunt Sylvia’s house right next door.
Ms. Carr, once again, writes a wonderful story. The settings are very real and the characters are rich and deep. This is truly an inspirational story about war, friendship, hardship, bravery, fear, adversity, and the power of love. I can’t wait to see what Ms. Carr has in store for us next.
I would like to thank Ms. Carr, Harper Collins UK, One More Chapter and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I am not a lover of books set during the was and this would not be a book I would choose browsing the shelves of a bookshop. However, I am glad I received an ARC as it is totally different to what I had expected. A very well written and enjoyable book.
Engaging WW2 Channel Islands Fiction
Neighbours at War tells the story of young women during the terrible time of WW2 under the Nazi rule in the Channel Islands. It is somewhat light on the descriptions of horrors (plenty of that elsewhere) but heavy on the deprivation, value of friendship, especially of women, and the raw courage it took to survive those years. One of our heroines has a young baby from anticipating her vows and all the issues brought on by this. Very well written and researched, the author has a family connection to the islands. I highly recommend this book and hope that other readers might find their own parallels to today's world issues.
Thank you to the publisher who lent me an e-arc via Netgalley. This review is optional and my own opinion. Definitely an author to follow!
A beautiful story of the value of friends during life's biggest hardships, this book taking place during war. It pulls on the strings of your heart to know that such good people exist. A very moving story.
This was a riveting tale of friendship and perseverance. I can’t imagine the emotional toll of what this mother must have been going through. While I don’t normally like when a book jumps between different people it was definitely necessary for this story and was done so well and smoothly. I adored this book and the story it told. The way this was written was good and consuming. It held my attention from beginning to end and I was able to disappear into the story. I can’t wait to read it again.
This is a beautiful book and it is so amazing, the story is so lovely and very enjoyable to read. i loved everything about this book and i would recommend to anyone who loves reading to give this book a go. it is a lovely book and i will read other books from this author.
A fun sweet read! Highly recommend.
Many thanks to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for my ARC.
Helen Bowman is pregnant and has left London and gone to live with her aunt in Jersey.
When the Germans invade and her aunt dies Helen is forced into hiding with her young son.
Friends help her but they are placing themselves in danger. Will she be discovered?
A beautifully written story based loosely on real people stories and experiences during the occupation of the Channel Islands. Deborah Carr has once again hit the ball out the field with this vivid and emotional telling of what life on the Island of Jersey was during the years of German occupation.
Great story, interesting array of characters and a topic many of us find interesting this is a gold combination for a great read!
I really liked this book. It was a powerful and emotional read as books that take place in this era typically are. I really felt for all the characters and especially Helena with being pregnant and unmarried during this time. It was such a good read.
I really enjoyed the beginning of the book. It got a little slow when they went into hiding, however, was kept on my toes from the drama that continued. Neighbours At War is set on the island of Jersey during WW2. I found it to be an interesting read as I knew little of Jersey. A story of hope, love, loss, survival and friendship. It took bravery and determination to do what so many people did back then. I thought the end was cut short. I fell in love with each of the characters and found it fascinating learning about what life was like living on an occupied island.
