I always enjoy Megan Miranda's books. This one was no exception. It was a good thriller that kept me mostly engaged throughout the story. Something that I will recommend to others, especially if they have read similar books in the past.

This novel caught my attention and held it throughout. The characters have distinctive personalities. The slow reveal of the back story for each member of the family tied the reveal together very well. This was the first Megan Miranda book I've read and I will definitely read others.

I really enjoyed this book! I was immediately drawn into the story and the small mysteries throughout kept me hooked until the end. This was a slow-burn, character-driven mystery filled with lots of suspicion, secrets, and little twists throughout. I was super invested in the sibling dynamic in this book. It was like a second mystery to me- what was going to become of the siblings and their relationships by the end of the book? This was one of my favorite Miranda books yet.

Thank you NetGalley and Simon Element | S&S/ Marysue Rucci Books for my eARC in exchange for an honest review.

This was fine. I mean, I liked it, but it didn't blow me away. This would make a good palate cleanser in-between the heavier novels. It's your typical suspense thriller. Megan Miranda is a good writer and you can trust her books will be enjoyable.

This book was definitely worth the read! Had high expectations going into it and Megan Miranda did not disappoint!
Starts off with a sense of foreboding and an eerie sense that something just isn’t right. Hazel has come back home to give her goodbyes but gets a whole lot more than what she bargained for.
Couldn’t stop reading. Every part had me hooked. The second you started thinking one way you would be jerked to a different path.
Highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a good mystery/thriller.
Thank you so much net galley for the opportunity to read this book!

Reading Between the Wines book review #31/130 for 2024:
Rating: 3 ½ 🍷 🍷 🍷
Book: Daughter of Mine
Author: Megan Miranda

Sipping thoughts: So many secrets and lies leads Hazel Sharp to adulthood discoveries that shaped her childhood. Once Hazel returns home after a tragedy, she finds out that some of her childhood was a lie. I liked the dynamic of the relationships in this story as you had no idea who to believe. It was not my favorite of Megan Miranda but the mystery is why I gave it the rating I did.

Cheers and thank you to @SimonElement and @Netgalley for an advanced copy of @DaughterOfMine.

Wow! Pulls you in from the first page. Even though I figured out the “ who done it” there were still lots of twists and turns that I didn’t see coming. Great thriller.

I was fortunate to receive an advance copy of Megan Miranda's latest novel, "Daughter of Mine," courtesy of NetGalley. As a devoted fan of Miranda's work, I eagerly delved into this new offering and found myself captivated once again. While this story had a slower build compared to her earlier works, the payoff was well worth the investment of time.

Miranda expertly weaves a tangled web of suspicion throughout the narrative, leaving no character unexamined. Even as I approached the conclusion, I remained uncertain about the true identity of the culprit. The ending blindsided me in the best possible way, showcasing Miranda's mastery of the unexpected twist. "Daughter of Mine" is a testament to Miranda's skillful storytelling and ability to keep readers guessing until the final page.

The atmosphere of this one is great. The whole premise that there is a drought and the record-low water levels are revealing secrets is very cool. This starts with the returning-home-for-an-unexpected-inheritance trope. It's unique, though, in that the family relationships are not by blood, and the MC's mom was a bit of a con artist. Of course there's the childhood love interest and the difficult brother, as well as the small-town diner where everyone dumps their secrets.

This is a slow burn but it has some twisty moments and gentle suspense.

Thank you NetGalley for the ARC. I purchased for my library.

A brilliant thriller set in small town USA. This one has a car hidden for years in a lake. Women missing leaving their children behind. The local police seem to wrap up these mysteries in short order, until a high school boy goes missing. That’s when the holes start to be seen. It really poses the question, what do you do when everyone is some form of family?!? This was a fabulous read thanks to NetGalley.

Hazel finds herself in an odd family situation when her mom’s boyfriend, who took her in when she left, leaves his house and all its mysterious contents to Hazel. Detective Holt’s sons are not too happy. As Hazel searches through the house and her past, she discovers many hidden truths about rhe Holt men, her mother, and the sleepy town of Mirror Lake.

I forgot how much I love Megan Miranda's domestic thrillers. I just could not put this book down.

The characters are great. I really empathized with Hazel. The interactions between the characters felt authentic.

I liked trying to figure out the secrets before the characters did. I was pretty close to unraveling the mystery before the answer was revealed.

There were definitely a few heart-pounding moments as I feared for Hazel.

If you enjoy dark and twisty family drama, then you will want to read this book.

My review will be published at Girl Who Reads on Tuesday - https://www.girl-who-reads.com/2024/05/3-crime-fiction-books-you-wont-want-to.html

NetGalley Review — my rating ⭐️⭐️/5

“Daughter of Mine” by Megan Miranda is a story about Hazel and the search for answers on why her mother left her when she was young & the secrets surrounding the people she called family.

I gotta be honest. This book was so freaking slow & I just wasn’t shocked by anything that happened. I don’t really recommend this one 🥴🥴

I really enjoyed Megan Miranda's latest. It started a little slow, but then I got sucked right in. Hazel left town a decade ago, but the passing of her father who was a detective, brings her home. She realizes he's left her house to her (but her brothers). We learn that their mother abandoned them when she was just a teenager. As the plot builds, we learn of secrets and lies, and that clearly someone is behind it all.

Thank you to the publisher for a copy.

This, to me, is hands down Miranda's best book. I really enjoyed the story and all the different elements at play. The plot moved at the perfect pace and I am happy that Miranda did not use the dual timeline style for this book. It was best told in the present day as it was.

The ending was highly satisfying and I definitely recommend.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the review copy of this book.

I quite enjoy Megan Miranda's writing and this held true here. It's quick paced but still lays out the clues pretty well. There are some surprises thrown in as well. If you have enjoyed her work previously, you will probably enjoy this one from her as well.

When a book starts like this, you know you’re in for a thrill of a read:
“The drought started in the West. We watched on the news as the waters dropped in the reservoirs and lakes, and their secrets and ghosts slowly emerged.”

Growing up in Mirror Lake nestled in the mountains of North Carolina, Hazel Sharp is the daughter of the town’s most respected detective and the town’s most hated swindler — which is why she left her hometown for good many years ago.

But on the day of her father’s memorial service — 62 days into a devastating drought — she’s back with her brothers, both now on the police force, as a car is pulled from the dwindling waters of Mirror Lake. The old car is not the day’s only surprise: Hazel has inherited the family home, much to everyone’s surprise and to her brothers’ outrage.

As secret after secret is discovered in the family home and under the receding waters of the lake, doubt is cast on everything — and everyone — Hazel has ever known. Why did her mother disappear without a trace all those years ago? Was she a criminal, or was she a victim? The answer to this question — and the more dangerous one: Who’s victim was she? —will either devastate or, quite literally, kill Hazel.

This novel is not only a family mystery, but a family drama, and the structure of the novel reflects that. The book is broken into four parts — Father, Mother, Sons, Daughter — each delving into the characters’ past and current lives. Every family member has endured their own personal traumas, and the scars are still raw.

Everyone was suspect in this one! Was there a murder? Possibly. Everyone had a motive. One thing that is certain: someone wants Hazel to stop digging into the past and to leave Mirror Lake once and for all.

If you are a fan of suspense and family drama, Daughter of Mine needs to be in your book bag!

Thank you to Megan Miranda, NetGalley, Simon and Schuster, Mary Sue Rucci Books, and Simon Element for the complimentary advance copy! It was my pleasure to write this candid review.

The atmosphere is the best part of this one. I think if you enjoy lakeside settings, really eerie narratives and thrillers that are easy to follow and deal with family secrets and coming back to your hometown, this could work for you. I didn’t love it, but have seen a lot of folks love this one so give it a shot if the above sounds up your alley!
