Second in the series of the troubled Detective Freya Sinclair series I think she's a character like marmite. All I know if she was my boss and spoke to me the way she spoke to her team I'd not have much respect for her as she's rude and entitled!

I think that if we had a better understanding of the history of Freya we may understand and connect with her better as to me she has a constant chip in her shoulder.

It's clear she's suffered past trauma and this is weighing heavily on her current choices and reactions, some of which are skewed to say the least and she using avoidance and work as a tactic to run from her demons.

One Liar Left is book 2 in the Detective Freya Sinclair series. I have read the previous book and found I enjoyed this installment much more than the first. This one had me hooked immediately and didn't let go till the end. It had the twists and turns I was looking for and I really enjoyed it.

Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for my ARC.

I love finding new, great authors on Netgalley!
This was book 2 in her Detective Freya Sinclair series.
I really liked this story. It had a lot of twists and turns. The ending was a little predictable.
Freya was getting on my nerves a little bit in this one. In the first book, it was pointed out that she arrested the wrong person in her first big case. I don't feel like she really learned from that. She started going after the wrong person, and I feel like it hurt the case. She also complains about hip pain and always seems to have a headache. I feel like she should see a doctor. It would be hard to be a detective and be in that much pain. I felt like it didn't add much to the story besides making Freya annoying. Also, there were a lot of loose ends that were never brought up again. I get that the characters weren't guilty, so they were forgotten, but it didn't make a lot of sense to me. It just felt like it didn't add a lot.
Other than that, I really liked the story! The ending part was great, and I had to keep reading to see what happened!
I also really like Candy and Brad!
I definitely recommend this!

I really enjoyed reading this and the first book in the Detective Freya Sinclair series, it had that feel that I was looking for and enjoyed the concept. It had that tense atmosphere that I was looking for and thought the serial killer element worked with this story. It continued the story in a way that worked and was glad I read this. Emily Shiner has a great style for the genre and left me wanting more.

This was a great follow-up to the 1st book in the series and Emily Shiner does not disappoint! Det. Freya is still kicking ass and taking names, helping her co-workers along the way. I can't wait to see what the next installment brings for her and her team!

Once again Emily Shiner brings readers a suspenseful tale with great characterization in One Liar Left, the second book in the Detective Freya Sinclair series. This book takes place at least one month after book one and continues to be set in Freya’s hometown of Fawn Lake, North Carolina. A hunter discovers the bodies of two young women at their campsite in the mountains of Clear Creek Forest. The method of death for one of them is like that of a cold case from several years ago. Is the same killer back? As the body count increases, the killer is sending messages to Freya and others around her. Why? The killer seems to be one step ahead of her. Can she and her team prevent more deaths?

Freya is loyal, dedicated, driven, and honest. However, she sometimes has trouble listening to others when she becomes too focused on what she believes. She’s a strong protagonist with a fierce sense of justice and determination that made it easy to support her. Her team consists of Candy Ellinger and Brad Williams. Candy is intuitive and calls people out on their lies. Rookie Brad is happy to be working with the detectives. Chief Callahan knows Freya’s background and rehired her, but he doesn’t fully trust her judgment yet. He also has anger issues.

This novel starts with another chilling prologue that grabs the reader and pulls them into the story. This is a crime thriller and a police procedural and it seems that the police procedural part of it improved over book one. However, there were still instances of focusing on social media even before checking criminal backgrounds. One quibble that I had in this one was Freya’s inconsistency in listening to others. At times, the communication was great. At other times, it felt lacking. The pacing was more consistent in this novel and once again the twisty plot had me fully engaged.

The storyline is nail-biting at times, especially during the prologue and at the end of the book. A few short chapters let readers get insight into the killer’s mind. The sub-plot of the cold case was a little too obvious for me, but the overall mystery was still full of enough twists and turns to keep me rapidly turning the pages.

Overall, this is an exciting, intense, and gripping novel with great characterization. This book demanded my attention and was a fast read. I’m looking forward to reading the next book in the series. Those who enjoy crime thrillers may enjoy this series.

Bookouture and Emily Shiner provided a digital ARC of this novel via NetGalley. All opinions expressed in this review are my own. Publication date is currently expected to be April 22, 2024. This review was originally posted at Mystery and Suspense Magazine.

This is the 2nd book in the series that I have read and loved both of them. Freya is back again doing what she is good at, trying find the killer or killers before they strike again.
When women start ending up dead al with the same tattoo on their body and their tongues cut out Freya and her team desperately try to find a link between them all, The rush is on to find others before they also end up being killed.
Someone is out to deliver revenge on those they believed were responsible for the death of someone they loved when they were all younger. Can Freya get to them in time or will it be too late.
Yet another fantastic book to keep you reading up into the night.

This is the second book in the Freya Sinclair series by Emily Shiner and just as good as the first. Freya can’t help thinking about the one murder case that she never solved, when there is another murder that reminds her of her old case. Could the killer be back? This is a great series and can’t wait for the next book. Thanks Bookouture and Netgalley for this arc.

Emily Shiner does it again! One Liar Left reads like a thriller mover from line one. A gripping read from start to finish, Shiner pulls you in with not only the plot, but perfectly paced dialogue, the charming small town feel, and the themes that follow Freya and her crew from book 1 through 2. Her rich descriptions make you feel like you're in Clear Creek, and did I mention a furry feline friend? Do not miss this one!

Thank you Bookouture & Emily Shiner for this read!

This was another gripping instalment from Shiner. I was addicted from the very first chapter. It was dark and unsettling at times, thrilling and full of suspense. I am totally hooked on this series and our protagonist Freya Sinclair. The relationships of our characters and the small town feels has made me feel a connection for those featured and the dark crimes which keep me on the edge of my seat made me binge read these books in 1 or 2 sittings.

I am already on the countdown for book 3 (which I hope the author is planning because I need that ASAP).

Another winner for me!

While I liked book one, I loved book two. It gave me a lot more about Freya and the case centers around her only unsolved case. Is this a coincidence or is the killer back for more? Not only did I learn more about Freya, but there was development amongst her team, both their chemistry and their personal growth. They are all tenacious as they try and solve two murders and possibly prevent more.

Freya works tirelessly, sometimes defying authority, to get justice. I was gripped from the start and appreciated the red herrings and twists. I can’t wait to see where book 3 takes her.

Freya feels free for once because the cases have all been solved. However, tongue in cheek because two bodies were just discovered!
Freya tears around Fawn Lake, convinced her one unsolved murder has come back.
I enjoyed piercing the clues together but I was totally clueless about who was committing the crimes. I thought I had a good grasp on how the crimes were linked.
Shiner gives gruesome details which makes the reading exciting.
The Chief really annoyed me in this book. I don’t like him but I don’t dislike him enough, yet.
I’m eager to see how the unfolding Freya Chronicles continue.

Emily Shiner did it again with the second book in the Detective Freya Sinclair series. I’m glad I got to read the first one and the second one. She is such an amazing author and I think everyone should read her books!

One Liar Left by Emily Shiner was due to be published April 22nd 2024 by Bookouture. In this book two women have been found dead, could this be the work of the Fawn Lake Killer???? A killer who never leaves DNA behind but has been dormant for years. If not the Fawn Lake Killer, then who? When a connection is found between the two dead women when an old school photograph is found, Freya is determined to stop this killer once and for all.

I cannot wait to read more in this series. Hopefully more sooner than later.

I had the pleasure of reading Three Drowned Girls and One Liar Left, Books 1 & 2 in the Detective Freya Sinclair Series. They are thrilling and eerie books with all the action and drama of a police procedural. I couldn’t put these books down because I had to know how they would end. They are both full of twists and suspense with satisfyingly shocking conclusions.

One Liar Left is the second book in the Detective Freya Sinclair series, and once again, Emily Shiner did not disappoint!

Wasting no time setting the scene, the prologue opens from the murder victims' perspective in gripping detail. Detective Freya Sinclair has demons to overcome with this investigation as it mirrors elements of her one case that has remained unsolved, but she's up for the challenge! As background information is provided in book one, no time was spent on unnecessary introductions, allowing the plot to slowly envelope and smother as it unfolded.

Shiner takes care of the members of the Fawn Lake Police Department, making them work hard to solve the murder investigations, but she also rewards them for a job well done! The reader is also compensated with nicely presented cases, allowing a sense of achievement by all!

(As an aside, I purchased the audiobook for this one, as I loved Amelia Sciandra's narration so much with the first book and wanted that familiarity again when reading the second!)

This is the perfect easy thriller series to pick up this summer, where it's thrilling just for entertainment value!

Shiner, please say you'll take us back to Fawn Lake with the next book soon!

Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for the complimentary copy to read and review.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for gifting me a digital ARC of the second in the Detective Freya Sinclair series by Emily Shiner. All opinions expressed in this review are my own - 4.5 stars!

Two women are found murdered in the forest, with their throats slit and their tongues cut out. It's the same MO as in the past - is the Fawn Lake Killer back? This is the case that has haunted Detective Freya Sinclair because she was never able to solve it and the killer seems to be taunting Freya because another victim is found in her backyard. Freya is determined to stop him this time.

This was another good police procedural and I enjoyed spending time with Freya, Candy, and Brad as they investigated this crime. Esther is another good character - she took in Freya after her parents went to jail. I'm hoping there is another book in this series, because I'm anxious to learn more about the story of Frey's parents. This is a well-written police procedural and the suspense was high throughout. Great series!

Easy to follow plot, but with many twists and turns that keeps the story interesting. The main character is strong willed with a brilliant team behind her.
A very satisfying ending to a very good book.
