Description

“Here’s the catch—even if I make it out of here alive, I need a reason to breathe again.”

When MacThomas Pockets finished his last tour as part of the Scottish Special Forces, he was hired to consult for a film director to finesse some scenes that weren’t working. In a twist he never saw coming, he ended up moving to L.A. to work as the bodyguard for movie star Maybe Joe Sue.

It didn’t take long for Pockets to realize there were two Joe Sues: The Joe Sue the public saw with her perfect life and her Hollywood husband. And the private Joe Sue: the one with the traumatic youth that no amount of pills could cover up, who desperately wanted a child of her own.

Even after their paths diverged, he continued to track Joe Sue’s life. Only a few would notice when the bottom fell out. But he did. And that’s when he stepped in.

One man seeks to answer the question: How far would you go—really— to save someone you love? And in the masterful hands of New York Times bestselling author Charles Martin, finding the answer will take readers on an intense and heart-wrenching journey to the very end.

Charles Martin has done it again! The Last Exchange had the perfect amount of suspense to keep me reading and an imperfect main character, Maybe Joe Sue. Highly recommend! Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.

Charles Martin has outdone himself with this book. The psychological suspense had me at the edge of the seat. As the story comes together, it left me completely in awe. As with all of his novels, I want to re-read it just to see the beauty of the story. The depth and the insight that is relayed throughout the story never ceases to astonish me. Maybe Joe Sue is a phenomenal character in the story and I can't say enough good things about this one!!

Thanks so much to the publisher for the arc. The opinions are my own.

This new book by Charles Martin has a different feel to it than his other books. It drew me in right away, but it took a long time to figure out what all was going on and how it was tying together. You may need some tissues by the time you get to the end. It is an amazing book, and the contrasts of self-love vs self-sacrificing love, addiction vs discipline, giving life vs taking life are very thought-provoking. You will either love or hate the characters. It’s well worth reading.

Each Charles Martin novel seems to be my favorite. I am not fond of sappy romances and his never are sappy. In fact I would not classify The Last Exchange as a romance, but it is a character driven love story. It included a mystery, with such a clear picture of good vs evil, and those trapped in an evil drama. The characters became so clear in how far they would go to really demonstarte their love, or their evil intentions. I appreciate Charles Martin keeping unnecessary bad language in check, he also keeps it a clean story , even while it deals with the ugly reality of actions of evil hearts. It will be available Oct. 3
Thank you Charles Martin for writing such wonderful stories. If it could be a ten, I would give it 10 stars
The story does deal with the trauma of multiple miscarriages.

In true Charles Martin fashion, you are about to open a wonderful book that does not loose its grip on you until the final page has turned. The Last Exchange is a story of good vs. evil, grief, hope, and the complications that relationships and life undoubtedly bring. It is told in a before and after plot line and, throughout the story, the reader is left in the dark about what exactly the event that took place to trigger this before and after. The ending is wrapped up beautifully and I cannot wait to read it again to appreciate it even more.

Thank you kindly to Thomas Nelson Publishers, Charles Martin, and Net Galley for the complimentary copy of this book that I received. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

*Note to readers- there is mention of miscarriages and infertility.

The beauty of NetGalley is that you find authors that you normally might overlook. This is one of those! I wasn’t familiar with Charles Martin and wasn’t entirely sure about requesting this book, but am glad I did. What a ride. Initially, I had no idea where it was going and had real trouble seeing the connections between the different characters. However, had I noticed right away that there were “before” and “after “ chapters, I might have done better, ha! The story is like a fog, it slowly dissipates until everything becomes clear. “Joe”, the female lead, is real and believable who struggles with an issue that’s all too familiar to many of us. “Pockets” , one of the male characters, is too good to be true, most of the time. The book is full of intrigue and you’re wondering how this will end. The author is an excellent writer, “...where hope once bubbled up through the cracks of impossibility, she now knew only tragedy”. He throws in some “higher education” knowledge, if you will. Non-native speakers might struggle with some of his words and expressions such as “he cooked the books”, “liked to travel with a bit of a posse” or (my favorite) “every Tom, Dick and Harry.” It’s a fascinating read with a lot of depth and nuances that will probably require another read at some point in the future. His style reminds me of Davis Bunn, who has long been one of my favorite writers. I’m definitely adding Charles Martin to my list and will be looking for more of his work. I’d highly recommend giving The Last Exchange a try.

Many thanks to Thomas Nelson and NetGalley for providing me with a free complimentary copy. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Charles Martin has done it again! I was fortunate to receive an ARC through NetGalley. Thank you!!! I am a huge Charles Martin fan. I read it in one sitting. Now I'm upset it's over. This may have to be a read over. The story grabbed me from the beginning. Having read all of Martin's previous novels I knew it would address some hard topics. Miscarriage, infertility and some violence were part of the story. Charles Martin has a wonderful talent of writing from both the male and female perspective. What a beautiful love story and tells the limits one would go to to protect someone they love so deeply they would even sacrifice them self. I will say the court scene was a bit unbelievable but it added to the story's drama. Up to this point, Martin's character Murphy Shepard was my favorite but Pockets just took over my number one spot.
Well done Charles Martin! Another home run!

There has not been one time I have read a Charles Martin novel that I didn’t end up a blubbering snotty mess. And with The Last Exchange I have extended that streak. Martin will drive you insane (in the best way) wondering where in the world he is going with the story at the beginning, only to sit at the end of the book staring open mouthed and stunned to see where the journey ended. Thank you netgalley and Thomas Nelson for Themis advanced copy!

Charles Martin has done it again! What a remarkable story! His new book, The Last Exchange, will leave you spellbound until the very end. The Last Exchange is a story of hope in the midst of adversity, unconditional love and loyalty, good vs. evil, grief and loss, and is displayed in a web of relationships and characters that will keep you on the edge of your seat. The story is written in two-time frames, before and after, and can be sometimes hard to follow initially, but as you progress, you start to take the tidbits of information Charles presents, and simply want more. You will read this book quickly, as it is hard to put down! Topics such as loss, addiction, and heartbreak are prevalent throughout the story. The ending represents what true commitment and love can bring to a society overwhelmed by brokenness and sorrow.

Thank you to Thomas Nelson Publishers, Charles Martin, and Net Galley for the complimentary copy of this book that I received. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Excellent book! This is the type of book you don't want to put down. Maybe Joe Sue is an excellent character, overcoming failed marriages, failed pregnancies and addictions. An actress who has earned many nominations if not awards she always helps those around her. This book has everything, romance, mystery and even a bit of a thriller. Highly, highly recommend.

Every now and then, I stumble upon a book that has it all--depth of character, a driving plotline, twists I can't see coming, and--the icing on the cake--writing that is almost poetic at times, without being pretentious.

The Last Exchange is just such a book. It's the kind of book that makes you care. Real-world situations--like opioids, which are wreaking havoc in so many families right now, yet are rarely addressed in inspirational fiction--were handled thoughtfully and portrayed realistically. And the characters and their backstories were compelling--after all, if you don't like Pockets as much as I do, are you even human?

This is one of those books that skyrockets to the top of my "Best of the Year" lists, one I can recommend to a wide variety of reading friends, and one that will stick with me. I'm very impressed with it, and I'm hard to impress. A little like Pockets, in fact.

It's a comfort to know there are still books like this going out into the world. Top notch.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

I don't remember the last time I've been so engrossed in a novel! Without giving too much away, this mystery is about a Hollywood star's journey with infertility and drug addiction and how her bodyguard, Pockets, is willing to risk it all to help her find true happiness.
This story is written in two time frames- Before and After. At the beginning, it was hard to put the puzzle pieces together. But, as the story progressed, the "Before" and "After" made sense.
There are only a handful of books that I would read more than once, but this is definitely one of them. I can't wait to read more of Charles Martin's books!

WOW is the perfect word for this amazing book!! I'm always excited to start a new Charles Martin book, but this one is by far, my very favorite of his. It has everything you could want in a book - a little romance, a lot of suspense and a lot of wondering how it will all end. I absolutely loved this one and highly recommend!

I absolutely devoured this book!!!! What a book!
Pockets is asked to be movie star Joes bodyguard. Joe suffered an unhappy childhood and is married to a husband who is never home or with other women. She desperately wants a baby. With all this she finds her escape in drugs, she struggles with her addiction, seeking treatment which never seems to work and asks Pockets if she slips again to help her, After numerous miscarriages her only hope is a surrogate and then that leads to demands for money.
This book will grab you and you will feel love, tears, frustration, humor and hope!
I can’t wait for Martins next book!

This is a fascinating, compelling story that is action-packed, and somewhat of a roller-coaster ride to the very end. The characters are utterly amazing and made me wonder how anyone could put together such a diverse, and interesting cast of characters who each play a vital role in this gripping story.

Born to a young girl and left at the hospital: somehow the name Maybe Joe Sue ended up on her birth certificate. Joe grew up in over twenty different foster care homes until she aged out. Now she works at an all-night diner, flipping burgers to survive. A regular to the diner in the early morning hours frequently uses the corner booth to rewrite scripts. One morning he notices Joe’s easy-going manner, contagious smile, and her legs. That is when her life changed for both good and bad. In time, she becomes an Academy award winning actor, married to another Hollywood star. She, sadly, is also an addict, who after seven trips to rehab, still wears a pill fob around her neck which makes it easy and convenient to drop a pill discreetly into her mouth. The one thing missing that she yearns for is a baby, however, she has suffered numerous miscarriages.

Mac Thomas Pockets was in the Scottish Special Forces and was hired to consult on a film and ended up not going back to Scotland as planned, but instead moves to Los Angeles and becomes the bodyguard for Maybe Joe Sue. He immediately tuned in to her addiction, however, also recognized the other Joe, the movie star that her fans love.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions and comments are my own.

My words alone can’t do this book justice. It is a beautiful, touching story of love, addiction, infertility and the rigors of fame. It is a poignant exploration of human nature and the events that can change the course of a life.

The characters are well thought out with distinct personalities and the plot is unique and intriguing. This is one of the best books I’ve read this year. I am now on a mission to read all of Charles Martin’s books.

This is most definitely a 5-star read and I am ever so grateful to NetGalley and Thomas Nelson Fiction for the advanced copy. This book is due to be published on October 3, 2023. Be sure to grab a copy.

Page-turner.
I had no idea what was happening at the beginning of the book but Mr. Martin had me on the edge of my seat trying to figure it all out. By the end of the book I was in awe at how he pulled it all together. The characters are full of life. I thought I had things completely figured out and while I did guess somethings other things caught me by surprise.
This is a definite recommend from me!

Thank you to NetGalley for the advanced reader copy of this book. Charles Martin is one of my favorite authors and he didn't disappoint with his new book. I wasn't sure where the book was headed at first and I sure did not see some of the ending of the book coming at all. Loved it!

Charles Martin tells a story like no one else. An unlikely heroine; an even more unlikely hero. A line of protocol that must not be crossed. Indulgent, self-serving love versus sacrificial care. What emerges is the me-for-you kind of love story that rarely finds its way into today’s novels. Thank you, Charles, for this book.

I received an advance copy of this book for review. The novel explores the idea of how far a person will go to protect someone he/she loves. The very original and unique plot is multi-faceted and peopled with interesting and complex characters. I gladly and enthusiastically recommend this read.

As Charles Martin does best, a heart wrenching portrayal of good vs. evil. Good from first page to last page, I recommend for every adult.

How far would you go for someone you love? That's the question this story asks and answers. I loved every inch of this book. I couldn't put it down - read it in a day. This is a story of love and sacrifice that everyone should read.

This is listed as Christian fiction, but there is nothing overtly religious about it. But if you are a believer, the concept of the last exchange - having Someone taking your brokenness and giving you His unbrokenness - will resonate.

Highly recommended. Family friendly though some of the topics such as drug abuse and miscarriages will be difficult for some readers.

Thank you, Netgalley, for the early reader copy of The Last Exchange by Charles Martin! This author is one of my all time favorites, and his newest book does not disappoint! Martin’s books often revolve around people who have been broken through tragedy and the healing process they go through to find peace and forgiveness. In this story, it’s a Hollywood starlet and her bodyguard, and the complex relationship between them. I read this book in a day - I laughed, I cried, and I loved right along with the characters in the book.

Charles Martin has once again delivered an "I can't put it down" book, The Last Exchange. Maybe Joe Sue (Yes, that is her name.) was a foster child who made it big in Hollywood. She married, Syd, another actor who rode her coattails to star status. Pockets was hired to be her bodyguard. Because Syd was constantly away filming, Pockets and Joe became close, but they never crossed a professional line. When Joe was just our of rehab, she was kidnapped after receiving her third Oscar, and her surrogate mother was demanding more money , The whole story unfolds as Pockets stands trial. It is a story that could only happen in Hollywood.

this book illustrates what a person will sacrifice when they truly love someone. it's a great read. I was able to read an ARC on #NetGalley.

Charles Martin is one of my favorite authors and in my opinion he hit it out of the park with this one. It felt like a different type of story – a romance, a mystery and a good versus evil all wrapped up together. The characters are real, you feel their love, their hurt and their pain. You cry for them and you root for them to win.
I loved this book, and highly recommend this one!

I’m true Charles Martin fashion, the author ripped my heart out and handed it back to me at the end. I finished this book a few days ago and I am still speechless. How far would you go for love? Would you take it to the last exchange? If you are looking for a happily ever after this isn’t for you.

Thank you so much to netgalley and the publisher for allowing me to read and review this book.

I was first introduced to Charles Martin when I read The Water Keeper for my book club and have been a fan ever since. He writes about flawed people and then develops them throughout his books. This story was no exception. He always throws in a couple of "curve balls" in the plot that I never see coming. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for granting my request to read this book. Joe Sue led the perfect rags to riches storybook life. Now a revered famous Oscar winning actress, she remembers her roots well, amidst a troubled and much less than perfect personal life as she battles drink and drug addiction.
The story is really quite enthralling as told through the back and forth, between past and present. Usually not a great fan of the "then and now" carousel, this time, in this story, it was actually quite compelling and brought the scenery of the tale much more alive.
Joe Sue's bodyguard, Thomas MacPockets, a former Scottish guard, plays a front and center role as her story unfolds: dramatically, frighteningly and not without a little bit of sincere pity for the balancing act between having it all and living authentically.

The Last Exchange is the first book I have read by Charles Martin. It was a nonstop thriller. The main character Maybe Joe Sue had struggled all her life with being in and out of foster homes. Her character is so likable that you feel sorry for the turmoil in her life. I thought the back and forth with past and present flowed together nicely. A must read!
Thank you NetGalley, Thomas Nelson, and Charles Martin for the ARC for my review.

I finished this book last night. I've read most (if not all) of Charles Martin's books, and this was a departure from anything else he's written. It jumps back and forth from the past to the present day, and it was a fun challenge to determine how the parts and pieces of Maybe Joe Sue's story fit together.

Thank you to Thomas Nelson Publishers, Charles Martin, and Net Galley for the complimentary copy of this book that I received. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

THE LAST EXCHANGE by CHARLES MARTIN is a real classic and I cannot recommend it highly enough The story is both poignant and suspenseful, and full of emotion, with Maybe Joe Sue’s rags to riches rise to fame and the way Pockets takes care of her. We see the contrast between the two men in Joe’s life, Syd’s selfishness, pride and vanity compared to Pockets’ sacrifical love. In fact I find this a distinct reminder of Christ’s sacrificial love for us….
Both Joe and Amber come from humble beginnings, but, whereas Joe is kind and relates well to the common man despite all her awards for her brilliant acting, Amber is jealous and evil, feeling she deserves to have what Joe has….
Drugs, danger and blackmail are rife in the Hollywood scene, but the themes of new beginnings, true love and hope flow through the story as well.
I am not going to tell you any more for fear of spoiling the read for you.
This is a novel that I will read more than once. It is beautifully and sensitively written and most enjoyable, with even a dash of humour. The author obviously has a wonderful way with words.

Title: The Last Exchange
Author: Charles Martin
Genre: Fiction
Rating: 5 out of 5 (Actually, more like 6 out of 5).

Yes, Charles Martin is my favorite author and I love everything he writes, but dang. This book. I laughed and cried while reading this—and I binge-read the entire thing in one afternoon. Martin’s characters are always so quirky and larger-than-life and Joe and Pockets are no exceptions. I loved how their friendship grew and the secrets they were both hiding made it even more tangible and real. (The scene with the Queen!) As always, Martin manages to illustrate the beautiful truth of the Gospel while weaving a beautiful, moving story, and that’s why he’s my favorite author.

Charles Martin is a bestselling author. The Last Exchange is his newest novel.

The Last Exchange by Charles Martin tells the story of Maybe Joe Sue who grows up in the foster system but ends up becoming a well loved Hollywood star. Her husband Syd Painter is also a movie star and her bodyguard Pockets are main people in her life. The story is well written before the event alternating chapters with after the event. It’s a great story line with romance, kidnapping, and a trial. The characters are believable. I highly recommend this book and will look at others written by this author. I read so few books by male authors, but I'll pick up and devour ANY book written by Charles Martin...whether fiction or Non-fiction. His books are gritty, heart tugging, believable, engrossing, page-turning, memorable...the list goes on.

This one is no different. Powerful, un-put-downable read.

WOW! This is the first book that I have ever read by this author and it was captivating. I have never read anything quite like it. A true hero and heroine who epitomized selfless love and generosity. Fraught with challenges, sadness, deceit, greed, and naivety. Did it have a happy ending? Let's just say that it left room for hope, but wasn't fairytale "happily ever after." I hope to read more of Mr. Martin's writings. This did not contain foul language or explicit sex scenes. Yes, I recommend.

Charles Martin has outdone himself yet again with this rousing saga. Once again he'll blow your mind with his ingenius work. The poignant awareness of a person going through de-tox for substance abuse, their struggles and the triggers that pushed the protagonist beyond her limits coupled with IVF hopes gives depth but keeps the reader on the roller-coaster along with Maybe Joe Sue, Pockets and Syd with bings and zings zapping among them. And just who is that mystery man? I could be wrong, but I get a vibe that this book has an allegorical feel to it in showing how muchg God loves and cares.

I highly recomment this highly acclaimed author and I'm giving him a 5-Star rating for this fabulous story. It is a book I'd love to possess so I could read and re-read it multiple times over!

Wow, what a powerful story of two flawed people whose paths converge in a deeply moving story. I haven't read a Charles Martin book in a while, but this one makes me want to go back and read them all. Joe Sue is a tortured soul and Pockets has a deep and abiding love that he will take to the extreme to sacrifice all for her. Highly recommended.

This was the first book I have ever read by Charles Martin. It was so incredibly good. I did not want to put it down & read it in one day. It had hurt, love, reality, suspense. And so many things I could connect with. Joe's heartbreak hit way too close to home but I felt I could understand her even better. This book will sit with me for awhile. And will be recommended to many.
Thank you netgalley for a copy of this book. All reviews and rating are 100% my opinion

What a beautifully written book! I, however, am not surprised as Charles Martin is one of my favorite authors. Pockets is such a likable character and so is Maybe Joe Sue. I won’t ruin it for others by explaining the whole story but I will say I’ve never read a book like this one. I felt like I was right there with the characters going to Scotland, Montana, and other places. Fantastically written. I was provided an advance copy by Thomas Nelson through NetGalley. Thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to read this book before others.

Charles Martin has done it again! I loved this book. The story was really good and although I figured out the twist…it didn’t take anything away from my enjoyment of reading it. Pockets is my hero and what a love story between him and Joe. The plot, the characters, the writing…all superb. Charles Martin is an auto-buy author for me. He never disappoints. I gave this FIVE STARS and highly recommend! Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me to read this digital ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Wow! This book had me captivated from the first chapter to the last word… Even when you thought you knew, you didn’t.

Joe Sue was such an amazing, human, generous, flawed character

Pockets was so mysterious that even when I knew what he was doing, I didn’t know what he was doing

This is my first book by this, author and I can assure you it will not be my last,
I loved everything about it, the characters, the story, sitting on the edge of my seat as the author unveiled this like an onion we peeled back layers and layers and layers to just wow!

My thanks to NetGalley and to Thomas Nelson/Harper Collins Publishers for the ARC of "The Last Exchange" in exchange for an honest review.
Leave it to Charles Martin to once again take a reader on a whirlwind emotional journey........ and keep you compelled to abandon everything else in your life until you reach the final page.
Every time I find myself completely engulfed in a Martin book, my overall reaction is always the same......that this author's like Nicolas Sparks on steroids. He starts out by gripping you with a story and characters you can't resist........then along the way, he manages to impart some universal life lessons in love, loyalty, courage, faith and the power of good to overcome evil Somehow (I don't know how he does it) he never makes it feel preachy, just common sense inevitable wisdom.
You'll be pleased to know he's more than done it again with "The Last Exchange", a heartfelt, yet suspenseful saga of a celebrated, but much troubled movie star and her stalwart Scottish bodyguard.
The stoic, taciturn Scot MacThomas Pockets has traveled the world as a battle hardened warrior and when needed, a fearless, loyal protector and defender. It's in that last capacity that he finds himself guarding movie superstar Maybe Joe Sue. A gifted, gorgeous multiple Oscar-winning actress, 'Joe' survived a trauma filled childhood to become beloved by millions. But while she's admired and coveted worldwide, her drug addiction keeps her constantly in and out of rehab. And her equally popular movie star husband offers little help or solace... Because the world doesn't know he's actually a self-aggrandizing jerk who only lives for his own fame while hopping from one movie set to another. But in her sturdy, steady bodyguard Joe develops a slow burn, unlikely (and yes, sometimes downright funny) friendship, which Pockets struggles to not cross the line into anything more than that.
In true Charles Martin fashion, multiple terrible calamities befall Joe, seemingly all at once. And it's up to Pockets to put things right and thwart some hateful people, who've no idea of the fierce depths of his loyalty (and obvious unspoken love) for his besieged client.
Fair warning here - by the time you arrive at this book's grand slam finale, you're not going to move a muscle other than your finger furiously turning the pages or swiping across your e-reader. It's a prime Martin-ized wrap-up filled with stunning revelations, gut wrenching emotions and even some surprising humor along the way.
All of that makes "The Last Exchange" easily one of the best 5 star books I've read all year......and highly recommended.

Phew!!! What an emotional journey. In typical Martin form, he has written a achingly beautiful story with characters that feel real, raw, and flawed in the best ways. I don’t know how he does it every single time… but let me tell you, he’s done it yet again!!!

What a beautiful story of finding beauty in the messes of life, of knowing that brokenness and need are not weaknesses. Martin once again has written a story that draws the reader in from the beginning and doesn't let go until the end. It is a story that addresses real-life situations of addictive behavior and childlessness. It is an amazing story of a man who would exchange his own life for the woman he loves. Readers who enjoy contemporary psychological fiction will not want to miss The Last Exchange. I read a complimentary copy of the book and was not required to write a review. The opinions are my own.

I can’t remember the last time I read a book and wished it wouldn’t end, “The Last Exchange” by Charles Martin was that book for me and it touched my soul. The story deals with some very current & difficult topics, addiction, foster care, and infertility. The main characters are a Hollywood Star and her bodyguard who are authentic to the point of believing you know them, and wishing you really did! The author poses the question of “how far would you go to save someone you love” and crafted a story unlike anything else I have read, full of suspense, heart, hope and humor. I found myself laughing, crying and worried all at the same time. This book has to be one of the best books of the year, it certainly is #1 for me!

Thank you NetGalley, Thomas Nelson Publisher, and Charles Martin for the ARC and allowing me to review this book.

Do not start this book unless you have plenty of time because you will NOT want to set it down. Charles Martin does it again! This book will grab you from the first page and keep you reading until the last. I loved the character of Pockets. It's so infrequent that you find a character who is so raw, honest yet reliable beyond imagination. There are twists, surprises and incredibly real characters woven throughout.
I LOVED that Martin is able to what other authors seem to find impossible. He writes this entire novel sans swearing. He also writes a love story without sex scenes. You could actually listen in the car with your kids! What a novel concept!
The book delves into the topics of addiction and infertility in a real way. This is a suspense/mystery novel, but it's also a love story. It has it all.
Can I really ONLY give it 5 stars?

Charles Martin is a gifted author and he proves it with this novel. The plot was unique and engaging with many twists and turns that were unexpected. The character development was phenomenal and believable considering he was writing about an A-list actor and her bodyguard. I will say the names of the main characters were a little awkward in the beginning of the story but I grew to love them. I really enjoyed how he wrote the story in “before” and “after” scenes, which made the story flow smoothly forward. The message of the novel had me thinking about this Bible verse: “Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.”‭‭John‬ ‭15‬:‭13‬ ‭NKJV‬‬. This is what true love is and I think the author used Pockets showcase this.

When you start reading this book, it may take awhile to figure out what in the world is happening, but I loved the slow build to the story! This is the first book I’ve read by this author, but it won’t be the last! I thoroughly enjoyed the characters and the ending had some definite surprises!

Beautifully written and absorbing story of a down on her luck gal who is found in a rundown diner, is given a chance of a lifetime, only to rocket to superstardom, yet just doesn't lose that hometown gal way of life. Maybe Joe Sue enlists Pockets as her bodyguard (who you will absolutely fall for - chivalry is not dead!), and what happens next is a story that you will just have to read for yourself to discover. Beautifully written, the story is easy to follow and yet, it grips you and won't let you go. Classic Charles Martin masterpiece!!

This author is a gifted, inspiring storyteller who has created a riveting, contemporary story brimming with optimism, forgiveness, camaraderie, and compassion. It’s a book I couldn’t put down.

In addition to a slow-burning romance that extends beyond the confines of the page and rich, believable, three-dimensional characters that prick your emotions, this story is full of heart, mystery, and intrigue. As this novel covers Joe's path from waitress to Hollywood actress, kidnapping, and courtroom drama, I occasionally found myself in tears.

Charles Martin, a master, word smith expertly captures the ever-evolving glory of survival and a hope realized. I loved the relationship between Mr. Pockets and Joe, and the Hollywood setting. Joe says to him, “Sometimes hope hurts the most.” Mr Pockets replies, “Don’t ever quit on your hope. No matter the cost”…”Not Ever.”

This is one of my favorites novels Charles Martin has written, the characters and their situation will stick with you long after you close the book. This is a wonderful escape and one that would be amazing for you next book club pick.

I feel slightly ashamed to say that this was the first Charles Martin book I ever read . . . but oh my goodness, it was not the last. The second I finished the ARC, I started downloading book after book from his backlist and I spent all summer immersed in his stories. I've loved every one of them and am already mourning the fact that I only have a couple more to go. The Last Exchange is intriguing and interesting and at times, head-scratching in a way that makes it pretty much impossible to put the book down. Plumbing the depths of love and sacrifice, it's a story that stuck with me long after I finished. Lovely writing accompanied by lovable, though flawed, characters—the bookworm in me was oh-so-satisfied. And now that I've got a whole line of Charles Martin paperbacks filling a bookshelf, I think I can safely say that even though I was late to the game, I'm not a massive fan!

Charles Martin is the author who got me back in to reading as an adult. His writing style has a depth to it you don't find in many authors. I really enjoyed this work of his. It gave total Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo vibes with the old Hollywood style. And man, Pockets was just fantastic! An air of mystery and two stories colliding, I couldn't put it down!

This book and the way it was written was kind of mysterious; the reader comes upon subheadings “Before” and “After” all throughout the story. Slowly the reader comes to realize what they mean, but it’s not until the end that everything is revealed. Charles Martin is a gifted writer and it’s a joy to read his books!

I received this book from the publisher via net galley in exchange for an honest review. Five stars.

Wow! Just, wow! I have read a lot of Charles Martin’s books, and I was convinced that his last trilogy was him at the top of his game. I was mistaken. To me, The Last Exchange is his best work to date. I had to let the story percolate and settle before I was remotely able to articulate my thoughts.

If this story doesn’t move you, then I really don’t know what will. I cannot wait to see what Charles Martin will do to follow up after this book. The story of Pockets and Joe Sue is unforgettable and a perfect example of deep, unconditional love. The wrap-up to this story astounded me and really touched my heart. Masterfully crafted, this story has the makings of a timeless classic.

I obtained an advance copy of this book from the publisher on NetGalley and my opinion is my own.

Thank you to Netgalley and Thomas Nelson Publisher for providing me an arc copy. The author Charles Martin was so humble not to include a dedication in this book. Charles Martin is a new author that I discovered last year when I read When Crickets Cry, I loved his writing style and decided to find more of his books. This book was full of suspense and it kept me reading to see what happened. This thriller involves an agent who had to protect an actress, and all the struggles that occurred. You will not want to put this book down Enjoy!

The Last Exchange
by Charles Martin
Pub Date: 03 Oct 2023

"The Last Exchange" is the first novel I've read by author Charles Martin. I must say it was one of the best I've read in a long time. I can't wait to read more.

The characters were so descriptive, you either loved them or hated them. Joe Sue's character was so complicated. Mr. Martin did such a good job describing her ups and downs in life. There were times I thought she had such a large heart and other times I didn't think she had one at all.

The Last Exchange is a story of good vs. evil, grief, hope, and the complications in life and relationships.

I highly recommend this 5 star read.

My thanks to #NetGalley, author #CharlesMartin, and publisher #ThomasNelson #TheLastExchange for providing me with an electronic ARC.

I cannot express enough how much I adore novels by Charles Martin. He always manages to reach down into my soul and exorcise all kinds of emotions. This story of pain, loss, drug abuse, infertility, infidelity, high self-inflicted expectations, and the search for true love is one that will have you flipping the pages as fast as you can as you absorb every word written. The story of Maybe Joe Sue is heart wrenching. She has such good qualities and has an ability to appeal to her fans … they can identify with her down-to-earth normal activities that no movie star would consider. You get a glimpse into life in Hollywood and how people are manipulated and the expectations placed on them “to be.” Then steps in Pockets. What an amazing man. I fell in love with him from the beginning and was cheering him on from the first page to the last. I would love to experience the depths Pockets goes to show his love. And when you get to the final chapter, your heart will stop and you will be shocked! Another book by this amazing author that I will be purchasing to share with family and friends! I have every book he’s written and will never give them away … only loaning them so others can have the pleasure of being lost in stories of love, grace, redemption, unconditional love.

My favorite read of not only 2023 but possibly my favorite book ever. I started The Last Exchange a month ago and put it down. I did not think it was for me, but boy was I wrong. Charles Martin, I will never doubt you again, you are a genius when it comes to writing. Pockets is my favorite character of all time, I want him to be mine. He is strong, kind, compassionate, respectful, honorable, loyal and charming. The dialogue between Pockets and Maybe Joe Sue is mesmerizing, witty, engrossing and captivating. Charles Martin is a master storyteller.

This is only the second time I went back to a book I couldn’t get into and I am beyond happy I did. Now time to go back to the other books I abandoned!

Thank you NetGalley and Thomas Nelson Fiction for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. This is a must read.

Loved this book! Charles Martin is a talented author who has once again created a beautiful and moving story. The characters are real with all the complexity and complications of humanity. The story line is intriguing and emotional as it addresses how far you would go for the ones you love.

For years, I have listened to my sister-in-law Carolyn’s favorable reviews of Charles Martin’s work and watched her attend his book events in Jacksonville, Fl, but I had no idea what I was missing. Now that I have read THE LAST EXCHANGE, I can promise you that I will be working my way through the rest of his novels. The Last Exchange is an engrossing story that explores the depths of sacrificial love. This story is one that will stay with the reader long after the last page is read.

The writing is flawless, often so beautiful that it is musical. The characters are fully developed, so perfectly described that one can picture them. They are endearing and settle into the reader’s heart within a few chapters. There’s Maybe Joe Sue, the star, and her bodyguard Pockets, who is Scottish and every bit a gentleman. She also has a boyfriend Syd, who is a slug. We need a character to dislike in every book, and in this one, it’s Syd.
Here’s a book that has it all: great characters, a moving and twisting plot, talented writing, and touching human drama. And ever so subtly, there’s another story woven among the pages, one for those with ears to hear. It’s the greatest love story ever told. “Me for you.”

THE LAST EXCHANGE releases on October 3, 2023. This review is my honest opinion.

WOW!! This was another "WOW" book from Charles Martin. It's one of those books that I was completely obsessed with, and when I had to put it down, I couldn't help but think about the main characters. The hero, Pockets, was absolutely the best protector and loyal to his core. The heroine, Maybe Joe Sue, was giving and down to earth even with her addictions. The plot, mystery, suspense, and love were a masterpiece to me. I tend to scratch my head at all of Mr. Martin's endings because they are mind-blowing! This book was no exception.

Solid thriller with heart!

A charming, broken Hollywood star who needs understanding and protection.
A taciturn ex Scots guardsman just off his who says yes when Joe Sue asks him to be her security guard
The line between guard and employer is a fine one and not to be crossed.
When Kelly MacThomas Pockets takes on Joe’s protection, part of it will be protecting her from herself. As it turns out there’s also her drug addiction, her husband, and her overwhelming desire to have children.
So much is squeezed into this story I was at once both exhausted and exhilarated. There’s nary a beat between the unfolding plots told in a Before and After exposè.
Is there an HEA? Possibly, but not quite in the way I thought.
The courtroom drama was a little insane but hey! so the whole read.
High drama, likeable characters and high octane story telling made this a winner for me.

A Thomas Nelson ARC via NetGalley.
Many thanks to the author and publisher.

“I don’t know if this will make sense to you but a life laid down is better than one picked up.”

What a wonderful story! It didn’t hurt that I recently traveled there, but I totally fell for Scottish body-and-soul-guard Kelly MacThomas Pockets, who truly lived a “life laid down.” His commitment to high moral standards and self-sacrifice make him a fascinating character. More than his muscles, his scars define him as the sexiest hero this year. I couldn’t appreciate Maybe Joe Sue quite as much - I’m not interested in Hollywood and its excesses - but I could understand her pain and desperation. The actress everyone wanted to be, except Joe herself. As usual, Martin found a way to weave their relationship and trials together in a believable way for a uniquely UNbelievable happy ending (which is better described as a beginning).
Read this book, and then reread the first five chapters…you won’t be able to stop. Sigh.

I had to grab this book because it is written by Charles Martin. Everything I've read by Martin has been really good. I like the way he is able to convey events that are violent and omit all the gory details yet still convey the scenario.

Description:

The latest novel from New York Times bestselling author Charles Martin travels from Hollywood to rural Montana as one man answers the question: How far would you go—really—to save someone you love?

My Thoughts:
I love the vivid characters drawn and the names are so unique. A character named Maybe Joe Sue (who would name a kid that??) and another called 'Pockets'. Both characters were wonderful, lovable people, but I think I want Pockets in my life. I don't think I've ever read a character so loyal, loving, and caring as this man. The story was very tense, to say the least, and kept me on the edge of my seat. I couldn't put this one down - but that's wht happens to me with all of Charles Martin's books. Highly recommended as a great thriller!

Thanks to Thomas Nelson Fiction through Netgalley for an advance copy. This book will be published on October 3, 2023.

The Last Exchange by Charles Martin is a Christian fiction story that kept me reading to see how the different situations would end. I especially enjoyed the character of Pockets, the extreme measures he took to help Joe Sue and protect her. I enjoyed the mystery, suspense and the many twists and turns in this story. There is mystery behind so many events in this story, and I was kept alert trying to keep it all straight.

This story does contain topics that I would not feel comfortable having a young person read. With Joe Sue’s on going drug addiction and how Pockets dealt with it. Joe Sue wanted so badly to have a child but was unable to, which lead to her marriage falling apart.

I voluntarily received a complimentary copy of this book, this is my honest review.

Charles Martin is one of my favorite authors and this book is another winner. This book has a different feel to it from the last three books. There are some trigger warnings for this book, it deals with addiction, miscarriage and abuse. It is an amazing book, and the contrasts of self-love vs self-sacrificing love, addiction vs discipline, giving life vs taking life are very thought-provoking. The ending was not the story book ending I wanted but it reflects real life as there aren't always happy endings.
Thanks to NetGalley and Thomas Nelson for my advanced reader copy.

“Love is what makes us who we are. Hope is how we express us. Hope is love with legs.”

Confession time: this is my very first Charles Martin book. I had a bit of difficult time adjusting to the third person omniscient narrative with some first person perspective thrown in - it’s a style of storytelling that I don't usually read. But everyone (and I mean EVERYONE) was saying I need to read a Charles Martin book and about a third way into the book, I got it. I got the author's brilliant voice, his masterful weaving of the plot, his exquisitely crafted characters, and his call to hope and love even when all seems hopeless and bleak. Using flashbacks to fill in the past history and intense suspense and intrigue to propel the plot forward in time, the author completely captivated me once I found my bearing. Joe was lovable but broken and Pockets was undeniably the shining star - a loyal, compassionate, humble, honorable, resourceful protector. He wasn't perfect but was the perfect hero that Joe needed. The plot overflowed with surprises and plot twists, heart-rending memories, and unforgettable scenes of tenderness. The book played out like a movie and I sat utterly mesmerized until the end.

Now I must go and read all of his other books. I'm so glad I listened to "everyone" who told me to go pick up a Charles Martin book. I received a complimentary copy courtesy of Thomas Nelson via NetGalley and was under no obligation to post a positive comment. All opinions are my own.

The last exchange follows, a very different tale of love, brokenness, healing, and the spirit of overcoming life‘s challenges. Pockets is a bodyguard hired to protect three time academy award winning actress Maybe Joe Sue. She is married to another actor Syd, who later turns out to be not such a nice person. I don’t really want to spoil this book for you! Please trust me and just read it! I will be thinking about this book for a long time! I did include some of my favorite quotes below—-

How far would you go for someone you loved?

“This love is wrapped around my soul. It can’t be doused. Or appeased. Or talked off the ledge.” I tapped my chest. “And it doesn’t die because you lock it up. Or grow old.” I held out my hand and uncurled my fingers, noticing the scar where the bullet entered. “This kind empties itself. Holds nothing back. Gives you all of me. When your hope hurts, this love stands on a rooftop, or shackled in a courtroom, and screams at the top of its lungs. This love stands up and stands between. It says to those who would hurt you or steal from you, ‘Not today. Not as long as I have breath.’ So that’s what I did. I stood up. I gave you me.”

How far would you go to protect those you love?

“That said, there was one thing I had not protected her from because it’s the one thing on planet Earth that sets us free from the stuff that enslaves us and holds our heads under the water. The stuff trying to kill us. We can lie to one another to soften the blow, but lies only strengthen the chains. There’s only one thing in this universe or any other that cuts through prison bars and sets us free from the prisons in which we live. And that thing is the truth. Without it, there is no freedom.”

“So Pockets did for me what I could not do for myself.”
“Which was?”
“The last exchange.”
“The what?”
She spoke slowly. Enunciating. “Last exchange.”
He looked confused. “I don’t under—”
She cut him off. “It’s when you cross paths with someone who’s broken, just a mess of pieces, unable to fix anything about anything, and yet for some inexplicable reason, you stoop down, reach out and say . . .” She paused. Collecting herself. “Me for you.”
He protested. “But he took you—”
Joe cut him off again. Her voice stronger. “He took from me my pain and gave me what I do not deserve.”
“Which is?”
“My next breath.” She tapped her chest. “And the reason to take another.”

“Brokenness is not weakness.” She waved her hand across the crowd. “Look around. We’re all broken. Welcome to the human race. Weakness is being broken but too proud to ask for help. Sitting there thinking you got this.” She shook her head once. “You don’t got this. You don’t got this at all. Real strength is knowing that and when you’re broken. Only then do you got anything.”

Huge thank you to Netgalley and Thomas Nelson for my advanced reader copy in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own.

Wow...no words

What an amazing creation this book is! Celebrity has its privileges, but also its disadvantages. Joe Sue, a woman who went from nothing to everything in an instant, appears to have it all. But what she didn't have and desperately wants, is a baby to love and nurture. What she had instead was a career in a 24/7 spotlight and a resulting drug problem, pills to stay awake during the day, to create the movie magic she was adored for, and pills to sleep at night. A rotating addiction that was wasn't able to beat despite 7 times in rehab.

Kelly MacThomas Pockets has a storied life of his own, but most is classified. When he is asked to consult for a movie Joe is starring in, they meet, and eventually she convinces him to take a job as her bodyguard. Pockets accepted, and spent the next 5 years as Joe's bodyguard, friend and confidant. He is devoted to Joe and would do absolutely anything to protect her, never crossing the line between them.

Told in dual timelines, Before and After, this beautiful story shines a light into the dark path of addiction, those who suffer from it, and how lives change due to it. I highly recommend this book, it is one of my rare 5 star reads.

Thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book, but my opinions are my own.

An Extraordinary Story of Service and Commitment

SUMMARY
Maybe Joe Sue is a famous movie star under tremendous pressure, and to cope, she wears a pill fob around her neck and pops pills like candy. She has been through rehab six times. Nothing works. But now, there is an even more significant threat to her happiness. She has been trying for years to have a baby. Now, she has a surrogate carrying her baby, but even that seems to be in jeopardy. The surrogate has disappeared.

Six years earlier, MacThomas Pockets, who had served in the Scottish Special Forces, was hired as a movie consultant. He moved to L.A. To be a bodyguard for Maybe Joe Sue. He served as her bodyguard, where he came to know her all too well. He would do anything and everything to protect her, even from herself. He kept an eye out for her even when he could no longer work for her. He promised to always be there for her and even protect her heart.

REVIEW
Charles Martin is a consummate storyteller. All of his books are exciting and emotionally profound. THE LAST EXCHANGE is an extraordinary and gripping story of service, commitment, survival, and forgiveness. The writing has numerous shifts and is brilliantly plotted. The unrelenting tension will hold you captive for hours.

The characters were unforgettable. From the honorable special forces soldier turned professional bodyguard to the diner waitress turned pill-popping movie star, you cannot help but be amazed at the depth of the character development.

You must add THE LAST EXCHANGE to your reading list. If you are a Charles Martin fan, you know what I mean. If you have never read Charles Martin, you are missing something special, but be careful; just one book is enough to get you hooked. You will want to read all his others, too.

Thanks to Netgalley and Thomas Nelson for an advance reading copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

Loved this book, characters are so well developed and readers connect immediately, Martin’s characters are always damaged in some way and I love how he weaves their stories together for healing and finding love and solutions to problems. The gradual unwinding of a character’s story is one of the best parts of his books. Loved it. Thank you.

To the public, Joe Sue seems to have everything. But the man who knows her best sees that front for what it is, and realises what her life is really like. The truth is that she's broken and reaching a point from which she may not be able to come back - and he's the only one who can help. But helping her may cost him everything...

This is one of the most (perhaps even the most) moving book I've read in a long time. Why? I think a lot of it is the characters. Joe, while pretty much my exact opposite, is incredibly relatable, and as for Pockets - well, I'm not sure I have words strong enough. He's inspiring, an amazing character, and a great example of love and loyalty even when it really hurts - and the extent to which he will go, with nothing personal to gain, is deeply touching and thought-provoking. But even great characters can't make a story - the story itself is a beautifully woven tapestry of events. It alternates between past and present, at times covering a lot of ground quite quickly, but never for a moment losing my attention, and all building up to the perfect ending - perfect because it's not perfect. I've enjoyed books by this author before, but this has far surpassed them (though I didn't realise that was possible). Highly recommended.

"A life laid down is better than a life picked up."

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

This is such a good book! The characters immediately draw you in. It’s a story of the effects of trauma and how easily it is to lose yourself to try to hide the pain. This would be a great high school character analysis book.

I want to start this review off by saying if you haven't had the pleasure of reading one of Charles Martin's books, please pick one up now!!!!

Everytime I read his books, I am in awe at how he can take tough, heart wrenching topics and write about them with the most delicate of hands. In addition to that, he comes up with simply the best stories that are not your run of the mill fiction or mystery.

"Scars are just the body's response to things that shouldn't be there. A reminder of the pain."

As with most of his novels, this one is a story within a story. You have Maybe Joe Sue (which let's be honest here - who would ever name their child that!), who is a broken woman with the biggest heart on the planet, but her ife is one big roller coaster ride. And all she wants is to have a baby and be loved. You have Pockets (which let's be honest here is just the coolest name ever!), who is her bodyguard, confidant, safe keeper and moral compass. I think we all could use a Pockets in our lives.

"We are all a mess. And no amount of money, and no amount of drugs, changes that. When you're broken, life is finding beauty in the mess. And then holding in for dear life."

The Last Exchange is about how their lives intersect and to what lengths one will go to for love. It's a story of friendship, commitment, love, forgiveness, intelligence, lots of heart and fight, and survival. Martin's writing is inspirational, beautiful, exciting, emotional and has some surprising mystery and twists built in.

Overall this is a hard to put down page turner, that is one awesome story with incredible characters that have multiple layers to them. And with all of his books, I feel like I've walked away learning something deeper about myself.

"A life laid down is better than one picked up.

Charles Martin is hands down my favorite author. But I promise you that did not influence this review. His book is just that good!

My thanks to Charles Martin, Thomas Nelson Fiction and Netgalley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Charles Martin has been one of my favorite authors for many years. Once again his newest novel succeeded in holding my attention from beginning to end. I did take a while getting used to the quirky character names and "before" and "after" timelines. It wasn't until nearly the end of the book that we finally find out what it was that happened in between. Be prepared for an emotional read that incorporates bits of philosophical advice. Thanks to NetGalley and Thomas Nelson for an advance copy to read and review.

Bravo! What a truly unique story seeped in love, betrayal, honor, duty and brokenness. Martin’s characters drew me in and kept me there, the plot had me reading far into the night and thinking about the story when I had to finally put it down. There are heartbreaking events of miscarriage and infertility along with truth, protection and justice. Just an all around incredible story that will warm your heart after ripping it apart.

This is the first book I've read by this author, and I can't believe it's taken me this long to discover him! He definitely has a different writing style than I'm used to but I loved this book! There are parts that are a little unbelievable but overall, it's fiction at its finest. The characters are so flawed but you are rooting for not only their love story but their lives in general. Maybe Joe Sue (yep, that's her real name!) is a famous Hollywood actress who is as flawed as they come. She is the "people's" actress because she really is one of them - caring, comes from nothing, very charitable, down on their level, etc. - but she's got so many issues! She is addicted to drugs to deal with all this fame and the fact that she has infertility issues. Her husband, also a famous actor, is a scum and I disliked him instantly! However, my favorite character is MacThomas Pockets - Joe's Scottish bodyguard. He is former military and will not cross any boundaries but guards Joe with everything in him. He goes above and beyond. I loved his character and his personality. He stuck by Joe through thick and thin. The suspense storyline shows his true character also.
I have thought about this book for days since finishing it. That's how I know it's a fantastic story. It's made me THINK about so many things! Mainly, what would you sacrifice for the one you love and how far would you go for another one's happiness and their security? So thought provoking! I will be thinking about this book for months to come!

Maybe Joe Sue (her real name) was a famous, brilliant actress who was grappling with emotional pain that was brought on by her traumatic childhood and complicated by her strong desire to create her own family with her movie star husband who was frequently away on location. Eventually Joe Sue became addicted to drugs and needed medication to help her sleep and medication to help her wake up and work the long hours necessary during filming her blockbuster movies. The only constant in her life besides pain was the presence of her bodyguard, MacThomas Pockets, who could always be counted on to protect her and look out for her best interests. Joe thought of Pockets as a friend but Pockets, though kind, kept an invisible boundary line between them at all times out of respect for her. This book asked the question: How far would you go to save someone you love? And it answers the question in a thought-provoking way. I was gripped by the mystery, the suspense, and the complicated relationships. While there were no overtly Christian references I was inspired by the beauty of the purity in a radical true love that willingly lays down its life for the good of the loved one. I only wish that the book ending could have been longer; after all of the drama, I needed a little more happy. An excellent book and I highly recommend it! I received an ARC from the publisher, Thomas Nelson, via NetGalley and this voluntary review contains my honest opinions.

WOW!!! Wow, wow, wow! I literally loved everything about this story - everything! I never thought Charles Martin could outdo the Murphy Shepherd series, ever, but that was before I met MacThomas Pockets and Maybe Joe Sue- yes, I typed that correctly.

I really don’t want to give away any spoilers, even a hint of one, so I’ll just say this- I LOVED Pockets. I loved Joe Sue and I loved their story! Pockets is definitely on my list of all time favorite male characters. He’s beyond loyal and will do what needs to be done. Joe Sue is down to earth and so likable even with all of her struggles. When these two were on the page together, I could’ve kept reading forever. These characters and their story will stay with me for a long, long time and I will recommend it to everyone!

At the end of the story blurb, there’s this question - How far would you go - really - to save someone you love? This story gives a very thought provoking, deep, multi layered answer.

I both read and listened to this story. Once I started the audio, I could not stop listening! When I wasn’t reading or listening, that’s what I was thinking about. That Scottish accent was everything! Charles Martin is an incredible storyteller! He’s definitely one of my very few auto buy authors. The Last Exchange will surely be a top read of 2023- if not the top read!

I received a complimentary copy of this book and audiobook. I also purchased a copy. All. The. Stars.

I received aa complimentary electronic copy of this novel from Netgalley, author Charles Martin, and publisher Thomas Nelson. Thank you all for sharing your hard work with me. I have read The Last Exchange of my own volition, and this review reflects my honest opinion of this work. I am always thrilled to receive another Charles Martin novel and to recommend his work to friends and family. He writes a compelling tale with personable folks and a storyline that will keep you reading into the night.

And The Last Exchange is no exception. You are gonna love Maybe Joe Sue, a woman who made her way through 27 foster homes before she aged out of the system, is in a destructive and unhappy marriage and is the darling of Hollywood anyway. And her personal security man, Kelly MacThomas Pockets - you going to love him, as well. Every chapter is another step into a tale that won't turn you loose. I hope these characters will visit us, again.
