Description
Join the farmer’s cat on his fascinating nighttime journey through fields, farms, forests, and even the city to see what only he can see after the sunsets.
Legendary artist Dahlov Ipcar mesmerizingly alternates between dark night scenes and vivid color to deliver a beautifully illustrated children’s classic. Each scene is shown first as a human would see it at night in blacks and whites, and then as a cat sees it in with vivid color and fine detail.
This commemorative edition features new back matter about Dahlov’s children’s books from her biographer, poet and art critic Carl Little.

This book checks off everything I love in a picture book! Beautiful, colorful and bold illustrations, an storyline that is easy to follow, and (especially for reading with kids) a way to interact with the story and use cognitive skills to find out what comes next. I would recommend to all guardians who love reading to their children!
Quaint vintage art and a delightful story about the comings and goings of a cat, at night. This book sparked a great sense of joy and left me smiling.
Great for any child. Perfect for any cat lover.
Note: The Cat at Night was originally published in 1969. This reprint offers an afterward by Carl Little, which reveals some of the renowned author's/illustrator's history.
The Cat at Night follows a farmer's cat on his adventures after dark. I can see this being a great readaloud to spark conversations with kids. There is a nice interactive element in which for each scene there is an opportunity to guess what the cat may see before finding the answer. It also provides some interesting animal facts along the way.
I cannot wait to buy and use this gorgeous book for read-alouds with my students. The illustrations are wonderful- the silhouette to brightly colored transition is a delight. An absolute treasure- and there are cats!
“The Cat at Night” is the delightful adventure of a farmer’s cat after he’s put outside for the night. As he ventures towards the nearby village he encounters a variety of sights and other animals. The illustrations alter between silhouettes and full color to mimic what we humans might see and then how the cat sees the world at night.
Several years ago I was given a vintage copy of this book so I was delighted to see an anniversary edition with additional information about author and illustrator Dahlov Ipcar. Though not entirely accurate about a cat’s nighttime meanderings (which can be very dangerous), I like that this story is gently told where Cat meets up with his feline friends in the village and still gets home in time for breakfast.
This book is great for young children learning about shapes and prediction about what a shape or silhouette is and for anyone who likes cats.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advance copy of this book provided by NetGalley and the publisher, Tilbury House Publishers. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
A commemorative edition of a classic book with a lovely tribute and in the back matter. This is a gorgeous book and I definitely want to use it for storytime at our library! The Cat at Night is about a farm cat who is out exploring at night. The illustrations cleverly alternate between a black outline on a dark blue starry sky (what we might see at night) and full color scenes (what the cat sees with it's night vision). This gives a fun opportunity to have kids guess where the cat is and what the cat might be seeing on every other two page spread.

"The Cat at Night" is an adorable children's book telling the story of a farmer's cat who explores the town and countryside at night. I thought the storyline was cute, and enjoyed the way the illustrations used dark shadows to keep children's attention as they guessed what the cat saw at night. I thought this was a cute children's book and look forward to reading it to my students.
Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC. All opinions are my own.
Loved this re-release of the classic tale. I always imagined my cats enjoying the night like the cat does in this boom.
Very charming. Mysterious in its little cat way. Engrossing for one to four year olds. There is a section that talks about a cat taking walk at night along the road. f course that;s what they do but it gave me chills and made me nervous because I know as an adult what hapens to cats on the road. Change the setting? Maybe.
Also, there's a section that talks about the animals a cat sees at night near the woods. Foxes are mentioned. I happen to know what happens to cats, at least young ones, if they encounter a fox. Change? Maybe.
This book is OUTSTANDING. I have two cats at home and although they are indoor cats, I imagined this was them going on adventures. I can definitely see this being super popular at my library!
This book is gorgeous! This is a cool book as there is lots of opportunities for learning and to make guesses based on logic. This can be a very interactive book.
Very cute book, and really great classic illustrations. I loved the back-and-forth of the silhouetted and color pictures. Great book and my daughters enjoyed it!
The illustrations were bold and lovely. The concept is so fun and kids will love it. I know this was first published many years ago, but I had never heard of it. It's a great book for readaloud and story times, and I'm glad it is getting a reprint!
Lovely reprint for the only, Dahlove Ipcar. Carla Little gave us a wonderful insight into Ipcar's world. This book is fun for young children to guess the next page. I imagine it will be a page-turner and one children will flip back and forth searching for all the guesses.
I would put this on the library shelf.
I read this book to Izzy. She loved the story and the beautiful pictures. She said it’s very educational and she recommends it.
The beauty of this book spans generations of young readers. Dahlov Ipcar created a classic that is still inspiring and entertaining new generations to come. The tribute at the end of the book by Carl Little is touching and sensational. The Cat at Night is filled with beautiful illustrations and questions to ponder as the cat makes his way around the farm. Any child will love and treasure this playful and creative book.
The Cat at Night by Dahlov Ipcar - 5/5
Children's Fiction - Picture Book
The Cat at Night is a fun story with unique illustrations that excite children. When the farmer's cat wanders around enjoying the nighttime, we are able to tag along and see where his evening stroll takes him. We enjoy beautiful and bold illustrations filled with fields, farms, and animals.
Thank you Netgalley and Albatros Media for the eARC.
This is an adorable story book that will engage imaginations throughout.
It tells the story of a farm cat who is put outside for the night, but that cat isn't afraid of the dark because it can see at night! Throughout the book we get a dark version of the scene that demonstrates what us people would see and then a bright colorful version that shows the cat's perspective.
The art is gorgeous. A bit folksy, particularly in the bright cat perspective pages. Several pages are frameable.
Kids will have a lot of fun looking at the dark versions and trying to guess where the cat is or what's it's doing and then being surprised by the bright cat perspective pages that follow.
Maybe a reach, but a good way to start teaching differing perspectives....what you see may not be what I see, etc.
Definitely recommend!
Thank you NetGalley and Publishers for giving me early access to The Cat at Night! I love a book that asks open ended questions to guide a discussion for the kiddos. I also liked the color scheme on the pages, and how minimalistic it was. The illustrations were beautiful. I enjoyed the cat progressing through different locations. It was a very calming book to me, and seemed to have a relaxing effect on the kids in my class.
What a wonderful book for children and/or adults! "The Cat at Night" is the story of a farmer's cat and his adventures during the night while everyone is sleeping. There are vivid illustrations and the story is engaging and interactive. Highly recommended. Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC. #TheCatatNight #NetGalley
The Cat at Night is a fun and engaging book with the style that is so characteristic of Ipcar that we all love. One of the things I appreciated the most is that it starts with what we see at night and a human's perception of a cat's life and then the next page will be what the cat sees. The book ends with the human thinking that the cat has been asleep all night and is going back to sleep (when in fact it's been up all night). Definitely a fun read and perfect for fans of cats. The illustrations are gorgeous and add so very much to the story. One of my favorite Ipcar books of all time!
“The Cat at Night” by Dahlov Ipcar. This book was originally published in 1969 but I had never heard of it. This commemorative edition releases tomorrow and has added information at the end about the author. As someone who has a very spoiled cat, I loved this little book. It is also perfect for young readers! As the farmer turns out the light to head to bed the cat is just getting started on nighttime adventures. Young readers will be actively engaged with this book because it provides repeated opportunities for discussion as they see silhouettes and have to guess what the cat is seeing at night. The illustrations are beautiful and I like how the silhouette pages complement the full-color version when you turn the page. I also enjoyed learning more about this author.
Thanks to NetGalley for the chance to read this early! #TheCatatNight #NetGalley
The black and white contrast was beautiful in the illustrations of this book!
The story was simple but easily keeps the reader engaged and predicting what is hiding in the illustrations!
As an Early Childhood Educator that strives to add new and fresh books to the shelves, I would recommend this book! It would open up many conversations about nocturnal animals and could open up many avenues for lesson plan extensions!
First published in 1969, the re-release of this children's classic is a splendid addition to children's booklists of 2023. The text is simple and the illustrations are sublime as they alternate between the silhouette-filled world that humans see at night and the richly detailed world that cat's see. The element of a guessing game that comes from seeing the human-view first will make this book a terrific read-aloud at bedtime or storytime. Dahlov Ipcar's book is getting a very well-deserved reintroduction.
I adore Ipcar's illustrations, and have many of her books in my collection. This one is a reprint from 1969, and the author's artwork fairly pulses with dayglo colors.
The farmer may think his cat spends the night sleeping on the porch when he's put out at dusk, but little does he dream of what his pet gets up to in the dark. Lucky readers get to experience the nighttime world through feline eyes. We see two versions of the same scene, one in stark silhouette, the other - the brilliant technicolor world seen through the cat's night vision.
Kids will enjoy sharing cat's nocturnal activities, perhaps right before they head off to sleep for a night of dreaming up their own adventures.
Many thanks to Tilbury House Publishers for bringing this gem back for a new generation of book lovers.
I had not heard of author/illustrator Dahlov Ipcar before finding this book. The story was simple but would hold a child's interest. What child isn't fascinated by what goes on outside their window in the dark? The illustrations are fabulous! I would buy this book for the illustrations alone. I am definitely planning to check my library for more of Dahlov Ipcar's books.
Great book for kids who loves cats. I can hear my childhood librarian reading this story, switching between a cat mask and her glasses as we flip between the cat's vision and our vision, waiting for us to answer "What do you think he sees?"
Princess Fuzzypants here: We cats sleep. A lot. We get a “bad rap” for being lazy when we snooze through the day. What some humans do not realize is the rich and active lives we lead long after our humans have gone to bed. In fact, because we see so well in dusk and dawn and even in the dark, there is a whole world that we experience that is invisible to human eyes.
This is a charming story of a farm cat who wanders through the farm, seeing all the animals as clear as day. Some are sleeping. Some, like the cat, are wide awake. He walks into town where he meets with his cat furriends and get up to all sorts of shenanigans until it is time to return to the farm. The story has delightful pictures of the passing scenes both as humans might see it and as the cat sees it. It has tidbits of feline information that will interest the young reader. The text is simple so it could be read by a child or by an adult to a child.
Five purrs and two paws up.
This is a charming book. The illustrations are vibrant with high contrast. The story engages young readers with questions about what the cat is seeing or doing next as it explores the night. This story has a classic feel with modern relevance.
What a sweet book! Love the illustrations and how it gives readers a glimpse into what we see in the night and how cat's vision allows them to see what we can't! Would make a great pairing with other books about nocturnal animals or Flashlight by Lizi Boyd. I think this book will be a great addition for beginning readers up to mature readers! The ending also provides a bit of sweet wrap up, as I know I've made similar comments about cats in my own life.
First off I loved the art work. I would reread this one. My five year old said this must be what our cat does when he is out at night.
This is a reprint of a book that was originally published in 1969. The art work holds up well but in my neighborhood, the kids will not recognize most of the setting. It's a nice enough story, with a cat going out at night and having adventures, but I don't think it will grab the attention of my students.
