One death, two victims – one seen, one hidden

A thrilling rollercoaster, combining a multi-layered crime drama with an emotionally charged family saga, Still Small Voice looks at a fractured marriage and the fatal consequences of love, lust, and obsession.

It’s a sweltering August day in 1998, and the body of a missing woman, best-selling author Nicky Butler, is discovered in an empty house in South West London. DI John Burroughs and his tenacious partner, DS Lucy Burton, are assigned to the case and it is immediately clear that all is not what it seems. Do they suspect Nicky’s controlling husband, James Scott, a hundred miles away in a dreary hotel room, contemplating a grim future, or the mysterious man seen entering the house the previous evening?

As the detectives delve deeper into the investigation without a clear suspect, nothing seems to add up and there is a strong chance they will convict the wrong man. Why was Nicky at her brother-in-law’s house on the night of the murder while he was out of the country? And who is the shadowy figure hovering on the edge of the action, watching and waiting.

The heart-stopping final twist will leave you gasping.

"Still Small Voice" by Victoria Goddard is a gripping mystery that commences with the tragic murder of a young woman named Nicola. The investigation into her death takes readers on a thrilling journey through the intricacies of her life and that of her husband. Right from the start, the narrative is interwoven with unexpected twists and turns, ensuring that readers are captivated throughout.

Goddard skilfully introduces a diverse cast of characters, each playing a pivotal role in the complex web of the plot. As a reader, I found myself constantly shifting from one suspect to another, mirroring the investigators' struggle to pinpoint the true culprit. The strength of this narrative lies in the author's ability to draw readers into the lives of all the characters, creating a rich and immersive experience.

One noteworthy element that adds depth to the storyline is the connection between certain characters through their shared experiences in the Army. The author's empathetic portrayal of individuals transitioning from military life to civilian existence is a standout feature of "Still Small Voice." Goddard navigates the challenges faced by these characters with a balanced and deeply moving approach, shedding light on the struggles of adapting to a new reality outside the structured environment of the Army.

In conclusion, "Still Small Voice" is a must-read for fans of mystery and thriller genres.. The shadowy world of deception and the nail-biting suspense make this novel an exhilarating journey into the heart of a mystery that defies easy resolution. An intricate plot is well supported by a cast of characters who you will want to know. There are so many possibilities that you will find yourself racing through to find out what happened - it’s definitely not obvious! I liked learning more about military life and the book is thought provoking in that it makes you ponder how people adjust when they return to civilian life.
