5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting read

Exemplifying the air of intrigue especially characteristic of Eastern Europe, The Balkan Air is an engaging story that educates as well as entertains. Some elements ring true more than others and are certainly more salient to the story than others, but it is a good read, especially for those interested in life in 20th century Yugoslavia or who like imagining themselves in someone else’s shoes, as the author puts it.
The narrative style of this book is first person point of view to get the reader to feel like he/she is in Ahmet’s shoes. The first person point of view helps you get to know the character better and delve into his or her emotions.
Ultimately, the chapters bring Ahmet's story to a close in a poignant manner that leaves the reader wishing to find out more about him and perhaps see a little of themselves in the experiences that he has lived through. On the whole, it is a fantastic read which I found to offer a unique and fascinating insight into a country that now no longer exists as well as a reflection on what it means to be human.
