“There was no place in the world Lizzie Blake loved more than Philadelphia. From the food, to the people, to the kaleidoscope of neighborhoods, energy pulsed in every crack and crevice of her city, coursing through her with a bubbly type of joy. But, as Lizzie stared down at the massive pile of shit she’d just stepped in, she hated that she had to question whether it was dog or human.”

Wow! What an opening! The moment I cracked open this book and read this passage I just knew l was in for some fine romantic comedy! Well, guess what? Ms. Mazey Eddings does not disappoint!

In this heartwarming novel Philadelphia native Lizzie has a three night stand with hunky Australian Rake. Even though their rendezvous is only supposed to last until the weekend things become a bit dicey when Lizzie discovers that she’s pregnant. Yikes! Have I mentioned how much I love the surprise baby trope?! Anyway, hilarity ensues as these two fish by out of water travel the uncharted territory of coparenting. These two decide the best way to do that is by living together (hello, forced proximity!). Another thing Lizzie and Blake agree to do is to keep their hands off each other but in their case, easier said than done!

I must say that my favorite part of this book is the titular character Lizzie Blake. The author Mazey Eddings shares her own neurodiverseness with readers by giving us Lizzie. She is a lovable live out loud twenty something who happens to have ADHD. She is an extremely talented baker but it’s her inability to manage her disorder that prevents her from holding down a job. However, that doesn’t stop her from being the ball of sunshine that she is. It is when Lizzie learns that she is pregnant she decides to take control of her ADHD so that she can be the best mother that she can be for her baby. When she does everything falls into place for her.

One important thing that happens for Lizzie is that she lands a job at a bakery where she connects with the owner who understands her and her quirks. As a result, Lizzie flourishes as a cake designer and her creations, particularly those of the female anatomy brings the otherwise forgotten bakery local fame.

This is just one of many examples of the actions that Lizzie takes in order to build up her self-confidence. It’s just so incredible to watch her grow and finally figure out how much she rocks as a person!

Now let’s talk about Lizzie’s baby daddy! All work and no play makes Rake a very dull boy. This proverb accurately describes him. Well, at least until Lizzie crashes into his life! They just balance each other perfectly. Lizzie gets Drake to lighten up and not take life so seriously while he in turn supports her emotionally as she navigates pregnancy, her new job, as well as her interpersonal relationships with family and friends.

It is just so amazing to witness these two perfectly imperfect people fall in love. What was supposed to be a platonic parental partnership morphs into something wondrous. Lizzie and Drake find their person in each other and the baby they make together is a beautiful bonus!

I cannot recommend “Lizzie Blake’s Best Mistake” enough! Thank you Netgalley for this fantastic book in exchange for my honest review.
