Nura Khan is a third-generation matchmaker in Atlanta who's killing it in the business of helping people find their happily ever after. Between her keen senses and the family-feeling she's built in the company, everything is running smoothly. She still has to face her beloved aunt's failing health and being single despite being in love with her fake fiancé and old friend, Azar, but life is going mostly well. Until one of the couples she's set up breaks up spectacularly the day before the wedding, and it cascades into a chain of suspicious and increasingly terrifying events. Suddendly, someone's out to get Nura and is threatening her business and everyone she loves.
Nura is a very relatable character. She's so focused on preserving the business her aunt handed down and that she's good at, that almost everything else gets forgotten. She does care about others and she wants to be there for those she loves, but she's of the mindset that the only one who can do things right is herself. The most relatable type A personality ever. It's helped by the fact that the people she's surrounded by feel as real as she is, so they help the reader see the softer sides of her. She might be obsessed with getting everything about the business right, but she's also willing to drop everything to help those she loves.
The case is interesting because it feels like it's all possibilities and very little body to it for most of the book. So many things are happening that you're as willing as Nura is to consider that it's all unrelated. Until things really take off, then it's one thing after another with suspense that builds up pressure all the way up to the startling finale.
There's a moment when it becomes extremely obvious who the person behind everything is, but it's not a deal-breaker when it comes to the intensity of the story. I'm actually impressed by how well Saeed manages to make us mad at them for what they've done but kind of understand the why of it.
Very happy thanks to NetGalley and Bantam for the interesting mystery!
