Meredith Harper suffered an unimaginable loss that saw her hiding from the world in her little corner of Texas. After 4 years and a lot of work on herself, she takes a solo trip to Colorado Springs in search of a vacation property. What she finds is Harlan Holcombe, a bona fide celebrity whose charm is only upstaged by his terrible dancing skills. The more time they spend together, the more they both believe that it's possible to find happiness together. But what happens when Harlan's search for redemption clashes with Meredith's road to heal from loss?
I came into it expecting to be emotionally wrecked, which Clack definitely delivers on, but what I wasn't expecting was how hopeful the story is through most of it. Meredith's loss is monumental and not even time will ever diminish it, yet she has found a way to live a full life despite it, or at least is trying to get to the point where that's possible. I loved the fact that she keeps pushing for what she knows will help her find her way forward, despite the fact that the people around her are not always making it easy. Harlan cares for her, and that includes letting her grieve when she needs to, either being there to remind her that she's not alone or giving her space to process. They have such a mature relationship that even the inevitable and mandatory third-act breakup doesn't feel insurmountable.
It's a bit of a fantasy in how down-to-earth and easy to get close to the Hollywood superstars are, but that's a minor quibble that is easy to ignore once you realize how human and empathetic the rest of the story is.
Very happy thanks to NetGalley and Haven for the emotional read!
