In “The Intrigue,” Silvia Moreno-Garcia transforms 1940s Veracruz into a fog-choked trap of rigid expectations and decaying gentility. It’s an evocative, immersive setting that hits as hard as any character.
The plot hinges on a high-stakes confidence scheme featuring three deeply flawed, morally ambiguous leads. You won't like them, but you can’t look away. Watching their carefully constructed masks shatter is the book’s true strength. Moreno-Garcia avoids traditional heroes, focusing instead on the friction of their volatile covenant.
Be warned: the pacing hits a snag in the middle, and the romance is far more understated than the marketing implies. Don’t expect a love story; expect a cold, sharp study of desperate people in a stifling world where every decision has a price.
