I have always been amazed by this story and watching movie Sleepy Hollow (Tim Burton's 1999 film) made me go Aww.. in a very haunting manner, that to when it cast my favorite actor, Johnny Depp. Return to Sleepy Hollow, a sequel to film inspired by Washington Irving's 1820 short story, is a wonderfully atmospheric graphic novel that takes the familiar world of Sleepy Hollow and gives it a fresh, contemporary spin. Casey Gilly does a good job of capturing the eerie appeal of the setting while building a story that feels more expansive than a simple retelling. The mystery, supernatural elements and gothic atmosphere work particularly well together. The Harrowingly haunting artwork adds considerably to the unsettling mood.

What I enjoyed most was the way the graphic format allows the story to lean into its visual strengths—the shadows, expressions, strange occurrences and overall sense of unease make Sleepy Hollow feel like a character in its own right. The flow of story is generally engaging, although a few developments felt a little rushed and some character moments could have used more depth. Still, these are relatively minor issues in an otherwise enjoyable read. Additionally, my ARC being water-marked made it difficult to read the dialogues blended with it.

Overall, this spin-off is a fun and atmospheric revisit to a classic setting. It may not completely reinvent the legend, but it offers enough mystery, horror and visual storytelling to make the journey back worthwhile. A good work of fiction as a gothic graphic novel and supernatural mystery revisitation.
