Description
Julie Larimer, a troubled teenage girl, ill at ease from the scorn of the aunt she lives with and threatened sexually by her aunt's son; accidentally -- and while soaking wet -- meets Gordon Willard during a heavy thunderstorm. Gordon is a former resident of the area and a man trying to live with the memory of the sudden death of his wife nearly a year earlier. Julie is an ingenuous person with the gifts of unrelenting curiosity and rare understanding of human nature.
As the story evolves, Julie also meets Matthew Corrigan, the investigator looking into Gordon's wife's death. Matthew is working from the belief that Gordon had actually murdered his wife. The two men are twice her age and half a continent apart, but with the special catalytic effect of Julie's personality, they are brought together to solve the mystery of Gordon's wife's death, and, in the process be forever marked by the bewitching experience of having known Julie Larimer.

Advance Praise
"I read daily until my eyes tired. I enjoyed the light mystery and backdrops I know, Eastern Tennessee and Salt Lake City. Julie's young, smart, charming and titillating. She is also complicated. The male leads are vulnerable and warm. This teenager overcomes obstacles, tragic loss and assaults and keeps her confidence. There are surprises in every chapter right up to the end."
Marketing Plan
About the Author:
M R Cates lives in a hardwood forest with his wife, two quirky cats, and a very spoiled dog. His view of fiction writing is that the author is only the guide; the story becomes the reader's, to be uniquely experienced in his or her own context and from his or her own viewpoint.
There are so many books written in a kind of formulaic style, and admittedly there are also many readers who want just that in their reading matter; but Cates marches, as it were, to a different drummer. And the drummer changes his beat from book to book. His writing goal is well expressed by one of the reviews of his first book,The Asteroid. The reviewer said "Many books I read are interesting or funny or exciting--only a few will cause me to try and relate the story to life and cause me to return to the story long after I have finished the book. Some authors come to mind who do that for me--Neal Stephenson, Ayn Rand, and Jared Diamond. I think the list puts M R Cates in very good company."
Cates has spent time in both parts of the country where Julie's Men takes place, and finds them each very beautiful and full of their own mystique. He, however, had never before encountered the likes of Julie Larimer. Probably you haven't either.
