Description

There's trouble brewing—bigly—in ritzy Canaandale during the 2016 presidential campaign.

Suzanne Dealy, a political progressive with a flair for the dramatic, is suffering from a listless libido, thanks to her Trump-supporter husband, George. His solution to “the minimum wage problem” in his 26 McDonald’s franchises is to replace his inconvenient workers with “McRobots.”

After a bitter quarrel, Suzanne attempts to embarrass George into a change of heart with an innovative shoplifting scheme involving Amazon air-pillow packaging and tight jeans. Happily, she discovers her libido’s not so listless when she's "saved" by Steve Harris, another admirer of the French economist, Thomas Piketty, who documented the corrosive wealth gap in America. But their sizzling affair gets complicated when, together with Harris’s idealistic daughter and her Brooklyn artist boyfriend, they decide to launch “the Piketty Brigade”

to fight income inequality and sabotage the McRobots.

Review #1: Onlinebookclub.org

"Garth Hallberg's The Piketty Problem was a well-balanced fusion of opposites to create a really satisfying whole: a funny tone mixed with a serious message, and a plot both highly personal and highly political. With expertly-created characters, a fast-paced plot, and a totally unique writing style, this book was a complete winner for me.

Its topicality was the icing on the cake: contemporary America was very clearly seen in its pages, and Donald Trump loomed as large as the giant inflatable Ronald McDonald (Ronald sounds very like

Donald...) that floats above Dealy's restaurant. I give this book a full 4 out of 4 stars and recommend it to anyone who likes a deft plot, great characters, humorous writing, or something to think about once you have finished reading."

Review #2: Reader - Peter Flatow

"Lots of messages that will get you thinking, especially about the future role of automation and the impact on all of us, especially the economy. As Grisham uses the law to support his stories, Hallberg is showing how social issues can do the same."

Review #3: Reader - Ira Berkowitz

"With passion, Garth Hallberg creates a world mirroring our own and populates it with characters who bring it to life."
