Description

When Nat Quinn stumbles across Abigail MacKay while he’s robbing a bank it looks like he might blow the cover she has carefully prepared for a job she’s been working on for months. She agrees to meet him to keep him quiet, but when Jake finds out she’s working with a bounty hunter who never brings in a criminal alive he suspects that Nat might be the next target. The whole case exposes Nat and Jake’s ugly past as victims of discrimination as newly-arrived Irish Immigrants at the hands of the ‘Know Nothings’ and leaves Abigail facing a full-blown case of Jake’s irritable heart—the 19th century name for PTSD, which was caused by their childhood trauma.

As the case unravels we see Nat and Jake display their skills as confidence tricksters as they try to divert one of the most dangerous men in the country. On top of all that someone has dumped a frozen corpse after disguising it as a tramp. These cases stretch Abigail’s forensic skills, reveal long-buried skeletons, and expose the rawest of emotions in the tense alliance. Will everyone make it out alive?

About the Author:

C.A. Asbrey is a writer of mysteries, and a fan of all things Victorian and obscure. A former member of law enforcement in Scotland, she developed a deep interest in early forensics and detection methods, particularly during the 19th Century, working in the field. This extensive research into early detectives and the tools available to them acted as the foundation for developing the characters in her The Innocents Mystery Series. She likes her mysteries twisty, complex, and intricate; through a fog of history and a touch of light humor.
