That’s the message behind author and former covert operative John Murray’s second non-fiction offering, Code Name: Papa – My Extraordinary Life Hiding in Plain Sight. The book describes Murray’s 30 years of covert operative work in support of the U.S., Canada and various European governments while illustrating a world that few people see – or even realize exists. “Covert operations serve the purpose of counteracting corruption seen at all levels of the military and government,” Murray said. “There’s always collateral damage done when someone is killed. I always tried to mitigate this damage. Some of these people had families, and it always hurt me to injure them.” Murray (known as “Papa”) was an operative with “affiliation,” meaning he and his team never acted without the permission of governments. Using civil engineering as a career “front” and living his life under an assumed name, Murray ran his organization from the 1970’s until his retirement in the early part of the 21st century, all the while struggling between the demands of his job and his continuous attempts at protecting some semblance of a family life that he had started before the Vietnam War.
