Description

Maggie is a fighter. She is abused by her older brother when she is eleven. Maggie is from an ultra-orthodox Jewish family in Israel. For years she buries the experience in a desperate search for spirituality. Her religious mask falls off when she turns 16. She is abused again. She meets Ido, who has also been abused and they develop a passionate relationship. Ido helps her deal with her past and confront her brother and parents, who must choose between their son whom they idolize and Maggie their daughter. Ido and Maggie work to build a life together and carve out new identities. It is not an easy task, but Maggie persists because she is a fighter.

Advance Praise

My Name is Maggie by Jackie Irons is many things: eye-opening, riveting, disturbing and very touching. As well, when it comes to writing style, it’s unique. Irons uses a very direct, in-your-face,“I’m talking to you” approach to tell her story of Maggie and Ido, a kind of Romeo and Juliet love story but one that is blighted and complicated by religious issues. There are serious psychological issues for each of them too, thanks to childhood sexual abuse, and as a result, both have found themselves questioning, and ultimately turning away from the teachings of the traditional Jewish religion in which they were raised.

I, for one, will never forget Maggie’s story and thank Jackie Irons for writing it. If you decide to read My Name is Maggie…and I hope you do… there will be no confusion in your mind about just how unique this novel is, nor how deserving of your time and attention. By the way, this would make for lively book club discussion. Highly recommended. --Review by Viga Bolkand
