Author's note: This book is an experiment in book-making, not only in its content, but also its form. It's 252 pages and about 74,000 words, carefully inter-laid with many b&w photos and other artwork, and designed for a particular format (8.5 in. square). It will never be an ebook. The very large pdf (66 Mb) you download is an exact facsimile of the printed book, with left & right pages together, in spreads.

As a result of the participation of a number of readers -- here on NetGalley and elsewhere -- and their feedback, the book and its original pdf version have undergone a number of significant changes, so the original pdf posted on Jan. 11 has been replaced with this one.
